I wasn’t alive, but I distinctly remember being taught and having read that Hitler did us the favor of declaring war on the US after we declared war on Japan, because it wasn’t a done deal that the US Congress would go to war with Germany. It was unclear to what extent the isolationists had changed their minds after Pearl Harbor.
