“Now, I will again state a fact: whatever he is now, McCain, in the 80s, as a Rep. and as a Sen. was a stalwart conservative. “

That was a looooooooooooooong time ago.

Now he is Public Enemy # 1 to the conservative cause.

Attrition thru enforcement is the solution. No amnesty of any sort.

Now, I will again state a fact: whatever he is now, McCain, in the 80s, as a Rep. and as a Sen. was a stalwart conservative.

And you have yet to supply even one detail to support your contentions. And he definitely was not in Congress to support Reagan's landmark tax cuts of 1981. And he is best known for being a backstabbing RINO now, amnesty, opposing Bush tax cuts, pushing cap and trade, opposing drilling and ANWR and other domestic areas, etc. etc.

All your blather proves nothing, and Levin did work in the Reagan administration and did not recall McCain as being any great foot soldier in the Reagan revolution (which had made it's biggest strides before Juan was elected to the House).

And what's important is, what has McCain been in the 2000s, not the 1980s. And we know what he's been in the 2000s.

I guess I could see some sense in your reply if you thought Palin was going to run for president in 2012. I just don’t see this as a realistic possibility.
Even if she became president, I would hope we would get away from the Obama philosophy that “I can get things done because you ‘owe’ me”.

McCain did not lose the Presidency because of his inadequacy.

what planet are you from ???

the only reason ole juan didnt get completely humiliated was because he chose Palin, a relative nobody on the natl stage, [whom i believe would torpedo his chances btw] and got a huge bump of vp voters...

yer 2nd premise is just as flawed...support him because 'he can win' is the reason we keep gettin this screeching 'anybody but x' mentality that continually waters down our principles and base...

Mrs Palin was 'good enuff' for me initially, and possibly still, if she stops layin down with dogs and walks the talk...if not, join mcquuuueeeeg in the dustbin...

Correct. It's also "humane", and "playing by the rules". This is a point that needs to be turned back onto those who want to excuse and exempt both law enforcement and employers from following the rules(aka "the Law").

kabar, your post #613 was an excellent, succinct and accurate summation of the sophistry of politicians using vague language to camouflage the reality of their intentions.

I would add, regarding Palin, that although I have defended her in some of these threads against what I consider to be hysterical and factually dishonest accusations and attacks, this issue of illegal immigration will be the one with the greatest likelihood of destroying her political viability.

Once she is forced to specifically define her terms, as you did, I do believe she will demonstrate she is much closer to McCain's and the Republican establishment position than you or I, and a great many of our FRiends here can tolerate. She is walking a semantic tightrope right now, just as most other politicians naturally want to do, but that cannot be allowed to persist until the nomination, of "whoever", is a fait accompli.

One other observation about Palin. I believe her likely misguided position derives in large part from two factors. The first is simple ignorance of the issue(and I mean that in the non-judgmental sense of lacking knowledge). Alaska is just about as far removed geographically and culturally from the multiple crises that are manifesting themselves in those areas of the country that are being practically overrun by illegals, and the levels of crime, disease, etc. that are rampant.

The second factor is, I believe, cultural and philosophical. Alaska is our last frontier state. It was built by people who were willing to uproot themselves and tackle the challenges of building new lives for themselves and their families. There is an understandable, natural tendency for someone like Palin to buy into the meme, touted by McCain and others, that the illegals just want to do the same for their families as well.

As you, Charles, and many others of us know, however, the matter is far more complicated than that. I believe Palin is not fully up to speed on the "facts on the ground" for this issue, and she really does need to educate herself. And, I hope Palin and/or her people read Free Republic and will consider these things.

For myself, I will continue to support and defend Palin from the sort of hysterical, vulgar and dishonest attacks she has received on these threads, but after this last obligation to McCain is satisfied she must clarify and specifically define her terms on this issue, and take specific policy positions. Waiting or stalling until the 2012 primarys is not acceptable.

I don't have a problem with Sarah Palin supporting John McCain. It falls under the area of a politician supporting an incumbent and it's fairly common practice. Therefore, I don't condemn her, but I don't praise her for it either, because, as I said, it's fairly common practice. It's unusual, but not unheard of, when a politician endorses someone other that the incumbent.

My problem is with her most ardent supporters, who 1) insist on coronating her even though she hasn't announced that she's running (and I don't think she will run), 2) compare her to great historic and Biblical figures, and 3) hurl nutty personal attacks against anyone who doesn't agree 100% with them.

I have my own doubts of Palin actually running....but if she does and wins, Washington IS much about IOU’S for any candidate that makes it there. I don’t like it but until the system is actually changed it is what it is.

I have no doubt Palin has the grit to take her stands in DC. but we know it is a beast that can swallow people alive! Especially if they don’t realize right from the beginning that you have to watch your back even from those who claim themselves, “friends”.

Clear thinking conservatives know that the 2008 elections was a route for all Republicans who the media successfully painted as the Party of Bush. When the economic collapse came, the media hung it around the Republican neck like an albatross. McCain could have had the best campaign in the world—Sarah Palin was genius—and Zer0 would have still won.

When you look at McCain, you ask why do Arizonans keep this old guy? In short, McCain carries clout. In these difficult times we need all the big hitters we can get to fight the DemonRATs. McCain also has easy access to the media. This is a big advantage when we need to get the message out when the DemonRATs spew nothing but lies.

We can’t always get what we want, but we with McCain, we will get what we need.

“Don’t excerpt selectively newby. It’s not becoming. The sarcasm should have been obvious to anyone.”

Trying to cover up your ignorance with false claims of “but I was being sarcastic”, I see.

“That’s the least she could have done.”

If she’d only limited it to that.

“When you can’t recognize obvious satire, give up.”

I don’t think you were being sarcastic. I think you really are that ignorant - and Obama was DEFENDING McCain’s agenda by attacking the USSC. McCain is on Obama’s side.

Oh yes, because free republic is just so full of wonderful positive stories of Romney, and we just have to stop it somehow. Maybe you didn't notice that every thread has a strong possibility of including an advertisement against Mitt Romney. If I supported Romney, the last thing I'd do is post ANY story about him here at FR -- it's like stirring the hornet's nest. And in fact, the only "good stories" I see here about Romney are posted by his opponents, so they can ridicule whatever good thing the story says about him.

One has nothing to do with the other, taking out or weakening Palin is the biggest service that could be done for Mitt Romney on freerepublic, as far as you and Romney, you have a well earned reputation as one of the most dedicated defenders of Mitt Romney here.

Provided that what we need is amnesty, cap-n-trade, closing Gitmo, and no free speech.
