Vanity: Signs of hyperinflation: Wal-Mart
In-store observation | 18 March 2010

Posted on 03/18/2010 5:09:09 AM PDT by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

A real sign of hyperinfation can be found in products on the shelf here and there in retail establishments. For example, let's take saline solution nose spray. At Wal-Mart, about two years ago, a 3 oz. bottle was 94 cents. Then, it jumped within the past year to $1.94. Yesterday, while looking at the same bottle, the price was $2.98. And, that's just for a little salt in water! Don't come back at me by saying that's just one item. A LOT of things are beginning to jump up in price. Leave your own examples here via commentary.

i used to buy groceries at walmart but in the past year i saw the same thing happening...first i noticed that they went to a uniformed generic pkg on the generic items....once that happened i began to notice that the prices on the generics were going up...one example i can give you is the generic vanilla wafers...generic used to cost 1.00 a box...then they went to about 1.50 and not long after the same size box was approx 2.70...for the same size pkg of brand name the price was approx 2.95...walmart is definatly playing games with their pricing imho....ps: i no longer shop there...

I have tried using plain water but it burns my sinuses more than a mild salt water solution. go figure.

Wonder Bread (yes, I have decided to buy it after having eaten my sandwiches on French Bread exclusively for the last 2 years), was $1.99 at regular price at Walmart. Sugarland bacon was on sale at another store for $1.99, but I’m pretty sure that was a 12 oz package, which would make it $2.65 a lb. Oscar Meyer was at $4.19 a lb, but that was the most expensive.

When I see Dominos, Pizza Hut and Papa Johns all running “$10 any size, any topping” pizza deals, that doesn’t seem like hyper-inflation to me.

When McDonalds, Burger King and Wendys are all pimping their dollar menus, that’s not hyper-inflation.

I avoid walmart produce altogether, but the worst experience I ever had with it was the strange rubbery feel of their broccoli. What were they doing to it I can’t imagine, but broccoli shouldn’t feel like it was bought in a gag shop.

I thought I was experiencing hyperinflation in vegetables a few months ago but it turned out that the cashier’s belly was adding weight to the scale.

Yet WalMart same store sales are down 1.5% from last year because their prices have dropped.

I have made several comments about the prices at Walmart tripling in some cases.

Dog food, cat food and cat litter is one that is unbelievable at the price increase.

When I see Dominos Pizza going for $10 and McDonalds going for $1 I wonder what kind of crappy ingredients are they putting in that food.

Blue Bell is pretty good; but Tillamook Dairy in Oregon is just as good, if not better.

Beer is my index.

My domestics Yingling and Shiner are holding steady ~ $5.49 to $5.99 for a six pack in bottles.

Micros are outrageously priced in the $9 to $10 range.

Imports do seem to be on the up and on the rise.

The $10 pizza thing is interesting. Pizza joints have overhead they have to cover. Since they usually only offer three or four types of items they have to keep product moving. It will be interesting to see how they all perform $$ this quarter.

MickyD’s had a good quarter last time. The $1 menu moves well at breakfast from what I can tell but the $1 coffee has to be a loser. Wonder how many go to fast food for lunch now that used to go to the Olive Garden.

yep, we started buying nothing but Blue Bell because all of our other brands have been shrinking their product containers. We did this about 2 yrs ago. Our state
starting carrying BB only about 5 or 6 years ago.

The $1 double cheeseburger at BK is the best value in fast food. I buy two of them a couple times a week. It's amazing just how few people buy them. Most simply go for the combo meals which are priced really high.

I saw bread for more than $3 a loaf. I don’t think I’ve ever seen regular sandwich bread at that price before.

Oh darn, I can’t remember where in the Bible, “ a loaf of bread for a days’ wages”.

One cannot measure inflation by taking a few products as examples. I bought a Garmin GPS recently that was half the price it was three years ago...I bought a Cabela’s electric fillet knife that usually sells for $29.99 for $9.99 and within two weeks of being off the sales price it went down to $16.99. But, again those are not adequate to talk about inflation or deflation alone. We can look at larger trends for that. The most recent Wholesale Price Index was down. That doesn’t happen in inflationary times...

But, to simplify the discussion. When we talk about inflation we are talking about supply and demand for money. If we grow money supply too much that is inflation.

Specific product price increases may have something to do with it’s own supply and demand forces...than with inflation/deflation. So, we use aggregate prices and money supply estimates to determine if we have inflation.

“.45 ACP is up to $17/box of 50 rounds.
Outrageous!”

It’s almost worth making a trip to Austin for that price- the cheapest I have found in Abilene is $24.

We always get the brown top (all natural) ones. I like Tillamook cheeses.

Bananas - $0.59/lb at Giant Eagle. Oddly enough, local italian specialty store sells them at $0.39/lb.

Arnold Pan Italian Bread - $3.29

Dunkin Donuts Coffee - They downsized they bag from 13 oz to 12 oz and it’s still $7.99 in the store. I try to pick it up at the shop as they sell 16 oz bags for $8.99. It’s the only coffee hubby and I can agree on and really like.

Cauliflower - $4.99/head. Farmers market - $0.99

Ice Berg Lettuce - varies around here from $1.99 to $0.99 depending on where you get it.

I just don’t have the time to shop all the ads every week and then drive around. I end up at freakin Giant Eagle all the time for convenience. Local Wal-Mart is a dump.
