New Orleans Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao supported President Barack Obama more often than any of his fellow House Republicans in 2009.
The statistic isn't surprising given that Cao, who defeated embattled incumbent Rep. William Jefferson in December 2008, represents one of the nation's most heavily Democratic districts and faces a strong challenge as he seeks a second term this fall.
According to a report by Congressional Quarterly, Cao supported Obama's position 68 percent of the time last year, including casting the only GOP vote for the Democrats' health-care legislation. On average, House Republicans supported the president only 26 percent of the time in 2009.
Cao also took a different position than fellow Republicans on 37 percent of the 502 roll call votes examined by Congressional Quarterly, the lowest "party loyalty" ranking among the 178 House GOP members.

I’d sooner send money to a democrat to beat Cao than see him reelected as a GOP rep- the vote turns out the same but at least the democrat party gets blamed for the legislative results
I honestly have no clue what people think sometimes. Do they no bother to look at demographics? Do they honestly for one second think a true conservative could actually win in that district? Or is it they think that to sink while sticking to your morals is better than to rise by capitulating in some areas?

What is the value in getting rid of this guy? We have zero chance in that type of district with any other type of Republican. I can understand getting rid of the McCains, Grahams, and even the senators from Maine. But I just can’t see any harm in having him there (versus a straight-line democrat, which is the only other option).
He will probably switch parties anyway, and whether he does or not will ultimately lose to a black democrat.

Heh? At least Cao will vote for the Rep position more often than even the most conservative Democrap.
BTW, he's in probably the 10 th most Democrapic district in the entire nation, and he will vote the right way on health care the next time through, for example. Also, it is likely he will be replaced by an extreme leftwing (and likely corrupt) member of the Black Democratic Caucus. Then you can make a direct comparison, see what you like better.
The argument is that he ruins the “brand” and that he is so unlikely to win re-election that he brings no long-term benefit.
There is an argument to be made here, but I wouldn’t call him a RINO but a liberal Republican. Bloomberg is a RINO. Scozzafava was a RINO, having endorsed the Democrat. Cao is not, although he’s an extremely unreliable vote.
I think there’s something to be said to breaking peoples’ allergy to voting Republican. If they can pull that lever for a Cao, then they might rethink why they’ve been voting Democrat all this time.
I may be wrong (and I often am :-), but I doubt Cao will win re-election. Even as a moderate (or RINO, if you prefer), he’s still a Republican in a seat that’s been Democratic for generations. I have to think any Democrat not as damaged as Jefferson was could win the seat back without too much difficulty.
He can vote for Obama policies all he wants but that district is going back to the Dems this year. He’s a one and out Congresman.
Unfortunately, I think it will be the same with Brown. You know when he’s up for re-election the Rats won’t pussyfoot around, they will bring in a big gun on their end.

The problem with the “brand” argument is that he contributes exactly nothing to what people think of the Republicans. Its not like people say “oh, the Republicans, that’s the party of Cao”. There are no negatives whatsoever.
And the positives (breaking people’s allergies, as you say, the occasional votes, and possibly the occasional convert to something other than the non-stop propaganda heard in these districts) far outweigh the non-existent negatives.

Has he voted with Republicans ever? If not, what’s the point? Look he voted for socialist care, what more do we need to know?...the least he could have done was voted with party, like the RATS do, and then stood the electoral consequences (let them vote him out.) That way we’d have gotten 2 good years out of that scenario, rather than 4, 8 or 12 years of grief.
