Republicans are stepping up their efforts to persuade more House Democrats to switch parties and are zeroing in on a second-term Pennsylvanian who is not ruling out such a move.
Democratic Rep. Chris Carney received a phone call Wednesday from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) asking him to consider becoming a Republican, a top GOP official told POLITICO. A spokesman for Carney declined to say if the congressman was considering such a switch.
No further comment at this time, said Carney spokesman Josh Drobnyk, who would only confirm that the call took place.
In a brief interview, McCain declined to offer details about the conversation. I just said, Whatever you do, I know that youll make the right decision for the country, said the Arizonan.

I voted for him as well, even after swearing I would never cast a ballot for him. I know that reluctance.
I am going battle by battle now. If McCain is fighting with us, I’ll not turn him away.
What you’re seeing in these moves, and in the country as a whole is a mass move rightward, in response to the socialist threat. These moves won’t be perfect, nor made by perfect people. But all moves rightward, at this juncture are better than where we stood last Nov. - don’t you think?
“Before everybody here shoots them down and tells them this isnt worth the effort...yes, it is.”
If they become no votes on Obama’s agenda NOW, it would indeed be a good thing, since it is pretty clear we will be a in a better and stronger position after November.
Yes, that’s it. I wouldn’t support him for anything in the long run unless he had a brain transplant, because he is either an ultra RINO or an idiot (I can’t decide which). But I think this particular issue is so important that we can’t afford to demand purity out of our supporters.
I agree. This bill must be stopped in it’s tracks.
Yes, my feeling is that now is all we have. If we lose "now," we will have lost it all, either forever or for a long and war-ridden time.
If at all possible. Who knows whether the signal that the bill might extend out past Feb. is true...that may be LIES again from the obfuscators/liars/socialists - but if true at all, is good news...
Either KILL it, or DELAY it mercilessly, and make it as PAINFUL for the RATS as possible.
Cheers to that.
Many have tried to figure that out. None have ever claimed to know.
Honestly, I plan on going to my Congressman’s office. Anyone wanting to join me, is welcome to. I am furious about this bill, and I think our representatives and senators should have tens of thousands of people outside their offices for the duration of the Christmas break.
What’s going on here should be recognized as a crime what with all the payola and special favors for individual states.
While some of that goes on all the time, this is just blatant in your face bribery.
I agree with your comments. Lets make them pay. I wholeheartedly agree.
FWIW that doesn't really matter. McCain is going to do what he's going to do. So will any Dems he tries to turn. There is no election over this so what anyone says is irrelevant.
Yes, that's it. There's no election going on, so this can just be a one-off. It might represent a major change, it might not.
But whatever, I'm just glad that somebody is trying to encourage opposition to this hideous bill. I was out and about today, and when I looked at my fellow Americans blithely shopping, I wondered how many of them even know about the bill or care. But maybe they're like me: they don't know exactly what to do, so they just keep on doing what they always do and hoping that something will happen to derail this disaster.
If Dems are willing to leave a party with a sizable majority almost a year before the election, then their internal polling must really be bad.
Only dems that are against this and voted no would consider switching parties.
There may blue dogs who are scared and may change their votes. At the same time there are likley ones that voted no only because they weren’t needed. It’s called catch and release. Also some libs might vote no cause there’s no public option.
As to Cao if he doesn’t change his vote on final passage he can go to hell.
Hell(o) no! Don’t let them switch over. They voted for the current Democrat leadership. They put Pelosi and Reed in charge.
Make the face their own voters. Then we can get someone with conviction.
He needs 40 in the house to switch before conference committee meets to retake the house and then go to conference and kill the bill there.
He now needs 8 plus 2 independents in the Senate to kill this.
This if friggin McCain getting his name in the news.
Too late. Cloture vote finished. Now they only need 51
I get that. I was going to vote for Ron Paul until Sarah gave me an excuse to vote for “her” ticket.
Carney? He’s not a moonbat but I wouldn’t have thought he’d be pliable to being a Republican. He voted for Obamacare.
About Atkinson, his ACU lifetime rating was 55. He backed Kennedy in 1980 over.
He lost in 1982, redistricting may have played a part although it’s very possible the district was just renumbered and stayed mostly the same. He was from Beaver County and was elected from the 25th and ran in 82 in the 4th which is still the 4th today (the former Ron Klink, Melissa Hart seat). It looks like the area went for Mondale in 1984. And ‘82 was a rat year.
I did not vote for McCain (wrote in Thomas Jefferson) and am probably more of a purist than most.
But: the dirty secret about this health care mess is that if it manages to become law, that's it. A few years down the road & this is an untouchable entitlement.
Anything - any maneuver, any deal, anything that can be done legally to stop this abomination needs to be done and done NOW.
