Republicans are stepping up their efforts to persuade more House Democrats to switch parties and are zeroing in on a second-term Pennsylvanian who is not ruling out such a move.
Democratic Rep. Chris Carney received a phone call Wednesday from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) asking him to consider becoming a Republican, a top GOP official told POLITICO. A spokesman for Carney declined to say if the congressman was considering such a switch.
No further comment at this time, said Carney spokesman Josh Drobnyk, who would only confirm that the call took place.
In a brief interview, McCain declined to offer details about the conversation. I just said, Whatever you do, I know that youll make the right decision for the country, said the Arizonan.

Joe Biden?
Could the GOP pull 5 Dems from the House to sabotage this bill? They have to find some way.
Eee Gads... one can just imagine the type of person McCain will try to get to swap parties.
I smell a RINO attack. If he switches he could be beaten by a conservative in Nov. McClame is at it again.
That would be funny! I know it would never happen, but man, that would 24/7 comedy. At least 0 would never have another trip or vacation.
Ps - thanks Dede and Newt.
Could they pull 4 Dems and get Cao to switch his vote?
Well, at least they’re doing something.
Before everybody here shoots them down and tells them this isn’t worth the effort...yes, it is.
I don’t care about their past track record. What they do now is what counts, and anybody who is not against us is for us, paraphrasing what a certain Person said.
If McCain can figure out a way to sink Obamacare by pulling 5 or 6 Dems in the House - he probably would be a major hero.
Good. If they could get half dozen or so to switch that might help.
mccain,butt out,you are toast in 2010.
Getting them to switch is one thing. But supporting them in a reelection bid against a more conservative candidate, HELL NO.
We have enough Rino’s in Juan McCain.
I almost do not care how the GOP sinks ObamaCare - if they pull it off - they would be major heroes. 5 or 6 Dems in the House probably are tired of getting threatened by O’s goons. At this point - whatever it takes.
Yes, if John could pull that off, I’d be first in line to give him kudos for it. Meanwhile, in the land of constant pain for Conservatives, life goes on.
A reliable Democratic leadership vote! Voted for stimulus, healthcare, financial regulation all opposed by more conservative Democrats. Get a good candidate to run against him and he’s history. The worst thing to do is to make him a Republican.
That’s the important question. I think this is a great strategy. If so, the Dems will be out putting oil on the steps and trying to eliminate the wavering members.
Prayers for the latter and for whoever is trying to get them to switch. If this bill doesn’t go through now, it will buy us time.
Obama desperately wants to get at least the shell through, and once he has done that, it’s all over. But if the GOP can at least stop this from happening at this moment, I think we can muster forces and it may never happen.
And the idiots who are criticizing the people who are attempting it should just shut up.
Carney to McCain: You first!
Not much of a secret now is it? LOL
f you Juan Mclame you p.o.s. RINO
Go home to Arizona and drool ya too old fool.
