So how are we supposed to know that a candidate for U.S. president meets all the qualifications laid out by the Constitution?
Do we leave it in the hands of the verbal free-for-all that passes as a debate over whether President Barack Obama actually was born in America? Or will Congress create an official path for presidential and congressional candidates to prove their qualifications?
For all the sneering denunciations heaped on the "birthers" -- those who feel compelled to prove that Obama wasn't born in the United States and thus is not eligible to be president -- they have not touched on a critically important question: How do we know if someone, anyone is qualified: Is the candidate at least 35 years old, a resident in the U.S. for 14 years and a natural-born citizen? Who officially confirms that a member of the House of Representatives is at least 25 years old, has been a citizen for seven years and lives in the state from which he is elected? Or that a Senate candidate is at least a 30-year-old, nine-year citizen and lives in the state he represents?
None of the wiseacres who have been laying it on the birthers seems interested in the question, choosing instead to use the debate as another opportunity to jeer and taunt the "wing nuts," "Obama haters," "right-wing zealots" and various species of alleged goofballs who have raised the question about the president.
For some reason, the attacks recently have intensified in frequency and intensity as liberal and mainstream commentators are having fun dishing it out. I've started to read FactCheck.org and other similar debunkers, and the more I read, the more convinced I've become that this tearing at the seams is not good for the commonweal.(continued)

It’s a lose-lose situation for Obama. There is evidence out there that Obama received a college scholarship (or two) reserved for foreign students. If he is foreign he should not be President. If he is a citizen then he is guilty of fraud and theft for falsely taking a scholarship away from a qualified foreigner. It would be check-mate.
The system contemplated by the Founders was that the Presidential electors would satisfy themselves of the candidate’s eligibility before casting their votes. Obviously, a majority of the electors were so satisifed in the 2008 election. End of debate.
Exactly. If he had to present the real documents [not the forged ones], then his entire agenda of Cap and Thrash, Health Care Deform, etc, would come crashing down to earth.

Do the electors even *know* about the USC requirements and how they're satisfied? What does this imply for the future? The Natural-born Citizen clause was written to prevent foreign allegiance. It's still important.

This is a plausible check-mate gate for bammy. I’d like for it to be true. What evidence is out there - and please tell me that Taitz and Berg and that Andy Martin aren’t driving it to the courthouse, and I’ll believe ya...:)
Is the onus on Barack Obama or on the state officials who certified Barack Obama to be on those 50 states' ballots without any confirmation of his eligibility?
It seems to me that they were the ones who should have demanded evidence to prove he qualified before they ever put his names in front of the people whose interests they've taken an oath to protect.
I'm thinking maybe the birthers are going after the wrong people to have their case heard. If I were a birther, I'd file an FOIA (or state equivalent) request to see what evidence my SoS used to confirm this - or any other - candidate's eligibility.
At the very least, it could help get a movement started to prevent controversy about future candidates.
