Voting rate dips as older whites stay home
About 63.6 percent of the nation's eligible voters cast ballots in November
WASHINGTON - For all the attention generated by Barack Obama's candidacy, the share of eligible voters who actually cast ballots in November declined for the first time in a dozen years.
The reason: Older whites with little interest in backing either Barack Obama or John McCain stayed home.
Census figures released Monday show about 63.6 percent of the nation's eligible voters, or 131.1 million people, voted last November.
Although that represented an increase of 5 million voters virtually all of them minorities the turnout relative to the population of eligible voters was a decrease from 63.8 percent in 2004.
Ohio and Pennsylvania were among those showing declines in white voters, helping Obama carry those battleground states.

That was once true in most every southern state. WV and Arkansas, and Lousiana to a lesser extent, are about the only ones left with that alignment. It’ll change once Byrd and Rockefeller leave the scene.
Yeah, I voted for Palin too.
Hmmm...wasn’t there some sour old guy running with her?
You said — Hmmm...wasnt there some sour old guy running with her?

I’m trying to remember, but nothing comes to mind... LOL...
Nationwide, older whites voted against Obama, and the younger generation voted for him.
It's the older whites who need to do the lynchings.
The key move was to institute open primaries.
Of course they always end up with the Antichrist picking their pocket and raping their children, but what the heck, the evil Republicans were punished.
That's such a stupid way of thinking ~ but we had some Freepers (I hope former Freepers) arguing that pint.
If he'd have done the Dole thing, resigned fromt the Senate, he wouldn't have had to worry about TARP.
Go away. I voted for that puke, McCain, and am tired of being blamed afterwards because the GOP nominates candidates like that.
The Rinos blame us constantly and are ready to have us drink the poison again with Romney. And then he’ll get clobbered, they blame us again and come up with a new Rino.
It’s called insanity.
All the older white males I know voted for Palin(McCain happened to be on the ticket). Maybe this statistic is true, but if it is, the white males didn't give Bozo an assist, the GOP and their crappy candidate that refused to fight for votes and kissed Bozo's a** gave him the assist. The FReepers that blame voters for voting their values or not voting because their values were not present in either of the two candidates are just plain ignorant. The only ones who should be blamed are the GOP officials who allow left wing liberals posing as republicans to run for office.
You know the process that selected our candidate included democratic voters, right? You understand how the primaries work, right? Not many of us had a choice by the time the democrats had slammed McCain down our throats in the early primaries.
And none of you are answering my question...would we be in this sinking ship if McCain were president today? Would we be frantically and desperately clinging to our Republic as we are now. Would we even be discussing socialized health care and climate control energy taxes? IIRC, McCain's plans on these issues were quite conservative.
So, unless you can prove your principled plan of "I won't vote for anyone unless he's truly 100% conservative" has worked out well for you in this election, you need to reevaluate your principles. They're not working out well for any of us.
This single mother pays plenty of taxes, works plenty of hours, doesn’t need any “sugar daddy” and voted for McKain because the Obamination scared (scares!)the crap out of me and because I thought my country stood a little better chance of survival. I know way too many people who got suckered into the whole “Hope and Change” thing. Well, “change” we got. I “hope” I never have to break out the shotgun to protect my kids.
“What did a conservative have to vote for?”
GOTV would have been better with a more honest campaign:
“Vote McCain: The lesser evil”
....and yet it is a Rat state...to the core!
This is a state that lets you vote straight party line by either punching out a single chad or hitting the screen once. Now realize, not a single Republican got voted to a statewide office. That means that each Democrat that voted (more than three to one over Reps.) had to go all the way through the ballot. It seems every Presidential election, the straight party ballots decrease but go back up in the off years. Net results, the Rats still controll the state, but the GOP gets 5 electoral votes.
Arizona? PLEASE draft a challenger to McCain, maybe JD Hayworth or Shadegg or some random conservative activist.
Let him feel some heat from the right wing.
Republicans don't think like most Democrats, something you apparently deeply regret. Nominate some RINO who goes against the conservative Republicans on several major issues, and a fair number will stay home and look for a better candidate next time. Sort of like the RINO Jerry Ford won over Reagan in 1976.
Nothing you or anyone else can do about it.
Not your choice to make, it's theirs.
No, it sucks. You really can’t put any other spin on it. I felt horrible, but no way was I going to pull the lever for a guy that can’t grasp the 1st Amendment. I’m in WA state, which is a province of Russia I think, so I’m not exactly in a swing state either.
With the WV GOP in the total disaray it's in now (and has been for a while) I don't see how that could happen. Rockefeller just won and if Byrd goes before the end of his term four years from now, Manchin will appoint a Rat. (Anne Barth?)
A shotgun could have cured that issue.
The voters should realize that voting for a Republican presidential nominee and Dem senators is at cross purposes. Every southern state got away from that except Arkansas, and I think WV will in the next election cycle or two. If Obama and Dem policies damage the coal industry, that might happen even faster.
Nationwide, older whites voted against Obama, and the younger generation voted for him. It’s the older whites who need to do the lynchings.
According to article:
....In contrast, turnout for whites 18-24 was basically flat at 49 percent. Asians and Hispanics in that age group increased to 41 percent and 39 percent, respectively.
Among whites 45 and older, turnout fell 1.5 percentage point to just under 72 percent.
Asked to identify their reasons for not voting, 46 percent of all whites said they didn’t like the candidates, weren’t interested or had better things to do, up from 41 percent in 2004.
Uh I think you misunderstand or underestimate the damage done to the economy for the next 50 years....
I am talking about the younger generations who are going to be cast into socialist slavery who were not even old enough to make the economic decisions for themselves that will effect their lives.....Do you think you should lynch them....?!
My daughter, who just turned 18 DID NOT VOTE for him; had she been allowed, she would certainly not have. Yet her future has been severely impacted. Many of the younger ones (like my 2 college aged students) DID NOT VOTE FOR Obama....they leaned towards libertarian/conservative beliefs.
Also, those who are young are by definition naive, not wise?—I know many are clueless and they were sadly sucked in by the cool personna—that’s what being young is all about. However, the older generation (mine and older) have NO EXCUSES—they should have known better!!! That would include the Unions, AARP, & Soc. Sec. crowd who voted him in.
