Ohio jobless rate hits 11.1 percent (Highest in Decades! Obama gamble loses in bell-weather Ohio)

COLUMBUS — Ohio’s unemployment rate jumped to 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May and the first time in nearly 26 years that the rate has topped 11 percent.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rate on Friday, July 17.

“Ohio’s labor market continued to weaken in June,” Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. “Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11 .1 percent.

The state’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.

The number of unemployed workers, however, increased to 662,000, up from 647,000 in May.

During the past 12 months, the number of Ohioans out of work has climbed by 279,000 from 383,000.

In June 2008 the jobless rate was 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate hadn’t been above 11 percent since an 11.2 percent rate in August 1983. The June jobless rate marked the third straight month the rate has been in double digits, starting with a 10.2 percent rate in April.

The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from May’s 9.4 percent rate.

In the Dayton area, Veronica Adkins, Kettering branch manager for Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, said her office is seeing a lot of people who worked for Delphi and General Motors.

"The quality of people we're seeing is a lot different," she said. "You see a lot more qualified people. Usually at this time of the year her company sees lots of requests for seasonal employment but that's changed," said Adkins.

"We're not seeing seasonal orders," she said. Companies are doing more with less in areas of seasonal employment such as landscaping and warehouse work, she said.

DeWine voted against drilling in Anwr, and was famously worried about the caribou or some such nonsense. He has always voted AGAINST gun rights, and he was, iirc, a member of the gang of 14.

DeWine was a rino through and through. His saving grace was a pro-life voting record.

I voted for the good guys and when I couldn’t find work. Oh, wait, NM. My fiancee lied to the cops about me hitting her and Obama’s guilty before proven innocent VAWA laws and now I have a misdemenor on my record. Thanks Obama, for protecting women!

I’m thrilled his lead is the polls has evaporated.

Its probably get Obama to bail them out. Obama is busy sucking blood everywhere while the economy is going backwards and in doing so, he is showing no regard for the taxpayer and his burden.

Texas economy is a lot better than many states too. Time to send illegals home - Illegals, the Democrats and stinking RINOs are bankrupting the country.

You’re not alone Ohio - the unemployment rate here in NC is ONLY 11%. Michigan is at 15%. Florida is over 10%. All four states voted for The One...

Thanks Mr. Hope & Change!

Good! Although I could see Kasich running for senator or president instead of governor.

All I can say about Ohio is that my state and local tax burden dropped by around $5000 just from moving to Tennessee. Ohio is pricing themselves out of existence, just like Michigan. You can’t rob businesses and individuals and expect them to stay around.

I didn’t remember him being anti-gun, although I certainly remember his embarrassing stances on ANWR and judicial nominations. Still, we couldn’t get a prominent conservative to run against him in the primary, and he won the primary handily, so at that point it was DeWine or Sherrod Brown. I think OH Republicans should have gone for 80% conservative DeWine over 0% conservative Brown.

Thanks for the info! Then we have some of the RINO wing of the OH GOP right on here.

The other year when Dr. Coburn ran, the NRA endorsed Carson and then had to back off and endorse both when Carson was nothing but a liberal, but they considered him conservative because he supported gun rights.

One issue voters drive me up a wall. This requiring purity out of candidates is BS. You don’t get a conservative agenda by electing DemocRATs — never going to happen no matter how conservative they are when they get in office and especially the Congress they will vote for Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid every time.

What does it take to get through some people’s heads that when the chips are down the DemocRATs will follow their leaders.

Getting a pro-gay, pro-abortion Governor because he supported gun rights is cutting your nose off when Blackwell was by far the better candidate. Stupid people.

One guy who took a severance from DHL, counting on Obama’s promise of jobs, says his severance has now run out.

Hard to have sympathy for a person who trusts what a politician says.

The first thing the city does is come in and inspect from top to bottom. They write up everything that they feel is wrong, and you either have to fix it before selling or get estimates from “approved” contractors (wink wink) and post a bond of 120% of the estimates.

Just wait until they tell you that it has to be "green" before you can sell it.
