COLUMBUS Ohios unemployment rate jumped to 11.1 percent in June, up from 10.8 percent in May and the first time in nearly 26 years that the rate has topped 11 percent.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released the rate on Friday, July 17.
Ohios labor market continued to weaken in June, Douglas Lumpkin, ODJFS director, said in a press release. Significant job losses in both the goods-producing and service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 11 .1 percent.
The states nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 33,000 over the month, from 5,133,200 in May to 5,100,200 in June.
The number of unemployed workers, however, increased to 662,000, up from 647,000 in May.
During the past 12 months, the number of Ohioans out of work has climbed by 279,000 from 383,000.
In June 2008 the jobless rate was 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate hadnt been above 11 percent since an 11.2 percent rate in August 1983. The June jobless rate marked the third straight month the rate has been in double digits, starting with a 10.2 percent rate in April.
The national unemployment rate in June was 9.5 percent, up from Mays 9.4 percent rate.
In the Dayton area, Veronica Adkins, Kettering branch manager for Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, said her office is seeing a lot of people who worked for Delphi and General Motors.
"The quality of people we're seeing is a lot different," she said. "You see a lot more qualified people. Usually at this time of the year her company sees lots of requests for seasonal employment but that's changed," said Adkins.
"We're not seeing seasonal orders," she said. Companies are doing more with less in areas of seasonal employment such as landscaping and warehouse work, she said.

I think the unemployment rate in Michigan is 15.1%.
Yeah... the evil rich Republicans were deliberately holding back on the jobs! /s
Strickland is a pro-tax, pro-abortion, pro-gay, liberal democrat.
What more really needs to be said?
If they get their tax increases they think will turn this around, then no one should be surprised if it hits 20%.
It helps Kasich and Rob Portman big time.
Hope and Change, Baby ! Hope and Change !!"
Good post.
Tell me about it.
I’ve inherited the family home in Cleveland and trying to sell it is a nightmare.
The first thing the city does is come in and inspect from top to bottom.
They write up everything that they feel is wrong, and you either have to fix it before selling or get estimates from “approved” contractors (wink wink) and post a bond of 120% of the estimates.
If it drops to 10.9% watch the MSM proclaim it to be proof of Obama’s brilliant vision.
So... hows that hope and change workin in Ohio?
Yea.
Don’t trust anything a Democrat says. They only know how to run stuff into the ground. Or lower.
Oregon is about 13% officially. Unofficially, in some cities its as high as 25%.
Be glad we’re not in PA. A farmer who owns 100 acres just got his RE tax assessment. It increased from a little over $2000 to $30,000. He called the auditors offices thinking it was a mistake. They told him, ‘no mistake’. Developing....
Don’t blame me. I voted against Obama and for Blackman.
I voted against Obama and for Blackman.
Don’t you mean ‘Blackwell’? *(Ken Blackwell)
WHAT??????????????????
Good GOD!
Since, I quit trusting government numbers in the Carter years, I wonder what the real unemployment rate is?
That’s why I could never figure out when I would see he is harmless and hasn’t been that bad which led me to believe it had to be moles.
Duh, yes.
The neurons aren’t what they used to be.
At least I voted for the right guy.
Um, that is “bellwether”.
From wikipedia:
A bellwether is any entity in a given arena that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings.
The term is derived from the Middle English bellewether and refers to the practice of placing a bell around the neck of a castrated ram (a wether) leading its flock of sheep. The movements of the flock could be noted by hearing the bell before the flock was in sight.
