The Huffington Post issued an apology Friday evening for an article about the resignation of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin posted at their website entitled, Palin Will Run In '12 On More Retardation Platform, written by HuffPo writer Erik Sean Nelson.
The Daily Dose published an e-mail apology from Mario Ruiz of HuffPo:
Due to an editorial lapse, Erik Sean Nelsons post on Sarah Palin bypassed the normal vetting process and appeared on HuffPost but was never featured anywhere on the site. Even though satiric works are generally given greater latitude, Nelsons post falls outside of HuffPosts editorial guidelines. As such, if not for the error, it would not have been approved for publication, and was removed from the site as soon as our editors became aware of it. We sincerely regret the error and any offense it might have caused.
Ruiz's statement the article was pulled by the editors contradicts claims by the author of the piece that he pulled the article within minutes of posting it:
Within 10 minutes of the post, I received 2 emails from special needs families, saw that it was hurtful and I pulled the post immediately. I apologize for offending you.
Since you wanted to know what I was going for, it was that Palin said that she was leaving the governorship because of jokes. What kind of President would she make if she couldnt handle some bad jokes? I used her words to create a farcical situation where offensive jokes were meant to be ironic. I saw immediately that it was wrong and apologized on the site.
Tommy Christopher, the author of the Daily Dose claims his intervention on Twitter alerted HuffPo to the offensive article:
Also important is that, within 10 minutes of tweeting HuffPo editor Jason Linkins, the piece was pulled (although it took longer for it to completely disappear). On a holiday weekend, no less, thats an amazing turnaround.
Of course, the left only cared about the article because Free Republic had brought public awareness to the nasty piece of work minutes after the article was published.
From Free Republic the outrage went viral leading to HuffPo pulling the article to ward off a PR disaster. Of course, there was no direct apology to the Palin family nor was the author fired, so HuffPo's apology appears to be a PR move and not sincere.
I guess I’d have no problem if an accurate adjective were included. For example: “Erik is morally retarded.” I think that is accurate and offensive to no one.

He isn't going to be fired, because the HuffPo people probably got a kick out of it until all hell started to break loose.
They're small, mean spirited people at the HuffPo.
We are in agreement, I just used fewer words! :)
Can you and I do a mind-meld? I want to write like you.
Man.
Skip a meal, Erik.
Seriously.
Thanks! Live long and prosper!
Apology should appear as a PUBLIC HANGING For the whole danged bunch!

Oops. Belated ping.
I would like to know that, too.
It’s a kindness to call it an apology. Sounded more like an excuse meant to cover their rear ends.
And that is saying something.
You are a significant contributor and worker but with all due respect, McCain is an honest man and his birth certificate is posted on line for everyone to see. He was born in a hospital in Panama and under the sovereign power of that country. No way he meets the "natural born" constitutional test.
Wouldn't matter even he had been Born in the "Canal Zone"--it isn't part of the geographical United States either and was then and is now subject to the sovereign power of the nation of Panama. Even if born in the Zone, he isn't a natural born US Citizen.
McCain had a further "citizen when he came down the shute" problem--the statute law which would have later operated to have made him a citizen at birth was not effective as to him--thus he wasn't a citizen when he was born at all.
[[I guess Id have no problem if an accurate adjective were included. For example: Erik is morally retarded. I think that is accurate and offensive to no one.]]
Yeah I can see that- but I think the word shoudl be wholly disconnected from those who are challenged, and reconnected with peopel like Erik who lack any sense of shame or decency
The point I was trying to make is that the same people who are cracking on the “Birthers” now were birthers themselves with respect to McCain.
I’m not sticking up for McCain in any way.
I’m skeptical of anyone who does not have a valid birth certificate, and none of the alleged birth certificates for McCain are valid. I’ve seen them all.
He probably was born in Colon, but you know how I feel about illegible document copies posted on the Internet.
At least, I hope you do.
Because they are petty and incredibly shallow. They are dumping their own failures onto her.
That Huffington bitch needs to stick to turning her husbands gay.
Sarah never had a problem with jokes, or even attacks on HERSELF. She drew the line at jokes and attacks on her CHILDREN!
