A group of travellers wrecked a multi-million pound police helicopter...
...after they leapt over a 4ft wall surrounding Surrey Police forces helipad...
After threatening staff working in the operations room, they set about wrecking the helicopter, smashing six of its windows and causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Vandalism: A group of travellers wrecked Surrey's only police
helicopter (pictured). Worth £5million, it was being used to spy on
their site
The incident happened at 10pm yesterday after weeks of aerial surveillance on the travellers site, where detectives believe stolen goods have been hidden.
Officers were getting ready to raid the site after collecting evidence they had filmed from the air. A police source said last night: '...no one expected this level of violence...'
The helicopter...is expected to be out of action for another two weeks while repairs are made....

Racist! LOL
Tramps and Thieves.
Boy,I found that out the hard way in Rome (several hundred US dollars were in my wallet). Also,a story that would be funny if it wasn't so disgusting......
Years ago I worked in a major Boston hospital. One of the staff nurses in the unit where I worked had previously been the night shift nursing supervisor for the hospital's medical wards. She told me a story of how one night, while she was walking down a hallway, she watched a group of gypsies...who had been "keeping vigil" for one of their hospitalized members (they do that)...carting off a brand new...and very expensive...EKG machine. She said that,as far as she knows, they were never caught.
Aww, you beat me to it. ;>)
You have serious problems if you really believe that.
My understanding is that "travelers" are a problem in Ireland and the UK.Don't know if they're a problem in other parts of Europe but the Romanian/Hungarian *gypsies* sure as hell are.
I didn't know that there were "travelers" in this country. And idea where they are?
A history lesson is in order. Way back when England began consolidating gains throughout its "near abroad" empire (consisting of Scotland, the Hebrides, the Orkneys and Ireland) they passed what are called the "Enclosure Laws".
These laws allowed wealthy land owners to "enclose land" to raise sheep (which simply can't be allowed to run loose in UK, that being a very populous part of the world).
The landowners could reduce the number of tenants on that land as farming technology was improving at the time, AND, best of all, simply toss squatters outside the fences into the public roadway.
These actions were definitely unpopular with the masses of poor rural people who then had no choice but to move to urban areas and seek employment in industry, then operated in factories just this side of hellholes.
The lucky ones could get jobs in coalmines or as prostitutes.
Definitely NOT a good time to live in Merry Olde England. Many Freepers have ancestors who left the Old World at that time to come to America, and they never looked back.
There arose a small group of folks living in the "border regions" (where England and Scotland join) who appear to have joined up with real Vlach Gypsies who'd been arriving in UK since the early 1600s. The Vlach, themselves, consisting mostly of a mixed group of Latin speaking people and Romany, built up a well-deserved reputation for petty theft, strong arm robbery, and independence.
For a variety of reasons (intense poverty, better roads, and desperation) the Border people became the Travelers. When they first appeared in Ireland they continued the same practice ~ living on the road, working on pots and pans, singing and dancing ~ and obtained even more adherents. These people have a colony in the United States in the state of South Carolina. They are known as "The Murphies".
Most Traveler groups are so similar to Gypsies in their way of life and use of the Romany language they can be said to have adhered to the Romnachel way of life.
It would be wrong to say that this is in any way a question of "diversity". These guys are as English as their more settled cousins who live in nice suburbs in nice houses and hold whitecollar jobs. Same bloodlines, DNA, ethnicity ~ all same, same.
Different Gypsies.
It’s not an euphemism. That’s what they are called ~ Travelers!
There's a large very insular Irish Traveler community in Florida. When their 'season' starts they blanket the country pulling their roofing and construction scams. They mostly prey on the elderly.
After they've 'made' their money they return to Florida for a few months, marry off their daughters, relax for a month or two, and then they're back on the road.
L
Murphy Village, SC is their base of operations IIRC.
The travelers in the US have the last name of Williams, they are HQ somewhere in North Carolina, where they actually have “winter quarters”, some in very nice compounds.
Spring to fall, they hit the road, hitting up unsuspecting homeowners for bogus driveway, home, and roof repairs, many times targeting senior citizens. Their female members go in and rob senior’s homes while the seniors are distracted at the front door by accomplices.
They have been around for fifty years or so.
You have been warned.
The “Gypsies” or “travellers” referred to in the article are ethnically Irish.
Thank you for the information!
Alhough the Nazis liked to popularize the term "bijali" and thereby gave it a negative cachet (particualarly when they went on and killed all of 'em they could catch), there are people descended from the Indian Rom who live in Russia, but they are extraordinarily "white". That's due to adoptions, intermarriage and what appears to have been simply a case of other groups in Russia "joining" the Romany (usually for survival, just as with the original Travelers).
So, the answer is, "yes, same, same", but "also, more different kinds".
Consequently I am regularly paid alms by Gypsies.
Mom (bless her soul) used to say that they steal babies too.
