Job openings are like musical chairs. There are millions of chairs and milliions of players of the game. Young people enter the game. Old people leave the game. Loss of value in retirement accounts has caused many old people to leave the game later than previously expected. Thus, the number of empty chairs in the game declines.
There are always empty chairs available for people who want to play the game. But some people are too choosy about which chair they are willing to sit in. They don’t like the location. It takes too much work to get to the empty chair. The chair is too hard or out of style.
Where I work, about 15% of my area has left for a new job better than the 6 figure jobs they had. The jobs they left have now been filled by other people, each of whom left an opening in their old position that has since been filled.
I average 6 or 7 emails per day from recruiters desperate to fill IT jobs for which they can’t find anyone. It isn’t just IT. I see help wanted signs in both Chicagoland and Central Illinois at fast food, big and small box stores, factories and especially warehouse and trucking companies. Apparently it is especially hard to find competent fork lift operators as they seem to be the most numerous signs posted.
It would be great if there were statistics on how many people change jobs and fill new jobs without ever applying for unemployment comp. I’ve changed jobs at least 50 times in 50 years and never became an unemployment statistic. That is typical of most people who lose their job. They are motivated to work and thus do what it takes to find the work. Unemployment is for those looking for an excuse to whine ... or to game the system.
Apology accepted, nonetheless, though.
Now drive down to Norman, genuflect at the statue of Bud Wilkinson, get a good lunch at The Mont, and go in peace.
I should clarify. I don’t tell them the same thing, I tell them that it rains here 11 months out of the year. :)
Although I nearly went broke trying to hold on to valuable employees during recession, as a business man now I would be shedding them. The risk is just too great.
Show them the door and if things don’t pick up or get worse I’m in tolerable shape. If things get better, hire some of them back.
Large companies need to cull the dead wood while also adjusting to a near term worse case.

February was revised down from -651k to -681k (-30,000) and March was revised from -663k to -699k (-36,000).
If the economy recovers, the population will reward the democrats with their trust and let them pass all their socialist agenda. If the economy instead gets worse, the population is more likely to resist it and throw them out of office at the next election.

On Glenn Beck the other day, they were discussing the college student that said he was in favor of the bailout so he'd be able to get a job. He was willing to give up his liberty in exchange for the security of a job.
You may fall in the same camp as the college student, but not me. Count me proudly in the category of those willing to sacrifice a little security (a job) if that's the cost of thwarting attacks on my liberty.
Obviously, it is to the dims advantage to minimize unemployment numbers. Then they can claim that their "program" is working if the number shrinks a little. If it remains high into next year it will definitely have an impact on the elections.

My old group at MS was laid off (all blue badges) and the work outsourced to Chinasoft.

My guess is it is your age. I have noticed with the generation that is coming into management now that I hear lots of comments insinuating that older workers are not as effective as younger workers. I think along with the culture of self-obsession, they have a bad streak of age discrimination.

I just love how AP reported this; “Unemployment Claims go down!”, which is a way to fake good news for Obama.
Go into business doing what, exactly? If there are no customers, there’s no point in going into business. I see businesses around me going broke and closing their doors right and left, no matter what sort of goods they produce or what sort of services they supply. There aren’t many things that are essential in a recessionary/depression economy that aren’t already being done.
_The Education Department will encourage colleges to increase financial aid packages for the unemployed. Colleges can consider an unemployed worker's situation and make them eligible for Pell Grants, which help low-income students afford college, and other aid. An unemployed person could get a Pell Grant and use it to pay for education or job training without giving up unemployment benefits. Beginning in July, the maximum Pell Grant will be boosted by $500, to $5,350.
_"Our unemployment insurance system should no longer be a safety net, but a steppingstone to a new future," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday. "It should offer folks educational opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have" and give them skills they need to "get ahead when the economy comes back."
_Obama has directed Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to implement the changes. Both departments also have launched a new Web site, http://www.opportunity.gov, to help get the word out to the public.
I just moved out to WA, about 18 months ago, and am at MS. I’m finding the same thing... I have many friends from India, but quite honestly, how can we be bringing any of them over here when unemployment is 15+%? It’s scandalous.

You have it wrong. If the economy tanks the people will want more socialism. If the economy recovers, and it will, the people will boot out the tax and spenders. The uS economy is greater than obamas actions.

Quit your job right now and join the ranks of the unemployed to further the process of "righting the system". Somehow I don't think you will.
You're right. These are temporary. These people will be unemployed, too.
