The head of the U.S. Catholic bishops' group said on Monday that Barack Obama's election as president should be celebrated but he made it clear the church would not compromise its strict stand against abortion.
Obama won solid support from Catholics in last week's election, exit polls indicated, even though the church opposes the view, supported by the Illinois Democratic senator, that a woman has the right to choose whether to have an abortion. The U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 legalized abortion.
Obama's election "is a moment that touches more than our history when a country that once enshrined race slavery in its very constitutional order should come to elect an African- American to the presidency," said Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.
"In this, I truly believe, we must all rejoice," the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops told the group's semi-annual meeting in Baltimore.
George said the country may have reached a point where "all races are safely within the American consensus." But he voiced concern that Catholics face political pressure when seeking office to compromise on "fundamental Catholic teachings."
The central Christian teaching, George added, was that God became man and "took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary, nine months before Jesus was born in Bethlehem."
"This truth is celebrated in our liturgy because it is branded into our spirit. The common good can never be adequately incarnated in any society when those waiting to be born can be legally killed at choice," he said.
"If the Supreme Court's Dred Scott decision that African- Americans were other people's property and somehow less than persons were still settled constitutional law, Mr. Obama would not be president of the United States," George said, referring to the 1857 decision

The neocons ruined the GOP, Bush, and IMO sold Rummy phony bill of goods on Iraq. And if it wasn't for those double dealing scumbags Dubya's popularity rating wouldn't be in the toilet - which opened the door for Barry and the Marxists.
When Barry's 'Civilian Security Force' starts rounding up people for the camps I hope the neocons go first.
A BISHOP or PRIEST showing up would put their IMPRIMATER on Obama's PRO_ ABORTION stance!!
What about Seperation of CHURCH and STATE!!!
Save that comment. Use it often.
Yeah, the pukes should be easy to find.......they're too dumb to hide.

**Obama won solid support from Catholics in last week’s election, exit polls indicated, even though the church opposes the view,**
CATHOLICS did NOT vote for Obama. Only CINOs (Catholics in Name Only) voted for him. What is sad is that they excommunicated themselves by doing so and they don’t even realize the consequences of their actions.
A Big Amen to that. Here are some other words that describe people like this: murderers, sinners, apostates, hypocrites. They need to repent.
Archbishop Raymond Burke from St. Louis was recently elevated to a position of some enforcement authority at the Vatican.
My wife calls him the top cop for The Church.
This is a no-nonsense bishop. During the last presidential campaign, John Kerry was not even due to come to St. Louis for months, yet the good Archbishop called a press conference to announce specifically that if Kerry did show his face in St. Louis he was not to receive communion.
Lurch instead got someone in Boston to give it to him, publicly of course.
With Archbisop Burke at the controls, things might start to happen. We shall see.
They need to be booed if they say this during Mass. If they say it at any other gathering they need to be told how wrong they are.
Do the Bishops want the matter returned to the States [referse RvW] or how have they expressed what they want the political leaders to do?
I'm sure glad that I'm a traditional Catholic and have nothing whatsoever to do with this buffoon or his 54% flock of self-excommunicating modernist non-catholics.
Amen.
They should have been jumping up and down screaming blue bloody murder against pro-death, so-called "Catholic" democrat candidates all the way up and down the ticket.
Never mind the run of the mill non-Catholic baby killing communists. Sheesh!
I have spent all day watching the Bishops’ conference on EWTN.
Cardinal George took statements from any bishop who wanted to speak; they were overwhelmingly pro-Life and concerned with getting out a very clear statement to the laity about abortion. The Bishop of Scranton hinted that the next step with the people like Pelosi and Biden was excommunication.
In addition, they also are continuing withholding any money from Acorn and have hired a forensic accountant to go over Acorn’s books.
It was pretty good stuff and not nearly as wishy-washy as this article makes it sound.
You are correct, Salvation, they DON’T know they’ve excommunicated themselves. And they don’t know it because most bishops don’t TELL them so.
The road to Hell, etc., etc...
Regards,
PS: Unfortunately, even if the bishops started telling them right now, many would ignore them. They no longer fear excommunication. The bishops fell down on the job here, letting decades go by before acting and I fear they’ve lost a generation or two by their inaction.
If there were going to be serious and strong statement to made here, the conference should have been held months ago. Too little/too late. I attend Mass every Sunday. I take up the collection as a small service. Until I get an answer from my Diocesan Stewardship Office on these funds that have gone to ACORN, I’m not going to do that anymore. My parish priest acted like he didn’t know what I was talking about and, sorry as I am to have to say this, I didn’t believe him. It does not shake my faith in the LORD JESUS CHRIST, but I may leave the Church over it.
Babs Mikulski and Bob Casey, Jr.
I susspect that Mark Warner will also be voting pro-abort.
Agreed. One of my children attended 16 years of Catholic education. She’s a complete liberal.
I would be so much happier if our Church leadership would just speak firmly and honestly about sin. Let the chips fall where they may and let any Catholics who don’t like it leave. We will be a small, but holier group.
Same with Republicans. We need to speak out clearly and build our case. No parsing. If we never win another election and the people defect. So be it.
Even Jesus let those who couldn’t accept His “hard” teaching about eating His flesh to attain eternal life walk away. He spoke the truth, the hard truth, in clear, concise words; and then He let them leave in droves if they couldn’t accept it.
The Catholic Church, and the Republican party, must do the same. We must be authentic and stop being quite so socially just.
