ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.
Sarah Palin confirmed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.
"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."
Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools -- which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.
But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc. Watch more on Palin's announcement »
"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."
Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.
"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

If Oprah is half the woman she pretends to be she'll have Sarah and daughter on her show before too long. I'm not holding my breath though.

because they are so willing to sacrifice their own values at the drop of a hat if it conflicts with some goal that they have.
Well let's see...I've been married to the same woman for 24 years and have never cheated on her. I have a seventeen year old daughter who isn't pregnant, and who will be going on to college after high school instead of getting married. I don't think any of that makes me perfect, but obviously it wouldn't help me fit in on the current Republican ticket.
I don't think "mistake" is the right word. I'd like to hear her say, that because of choices she's made, she is starting her family a little earlier than expected with a wonderful husband and a precious child.
None of us know what God's plan is for her. May He bless the entire new family.

A seventeen year old pregnant unmarried girl who decides to get married and have the baby and raise it, and a loving family who supports her despite her mistake, all say you don't know much about life. Come back after you've been around the track a time or two, by then maybe your snot-nosed excuse for an opinion will have mellowed.
I agree with the tenor of your comment. I think this situation should chastise some of us on the right who are so quick to attack the Gores and others about parenting failures.
In retrospect I strongly support the McCain/Palin ticket. But these are just humans who make seek to use us for their own political purposes. As true conservatives what matters most are leaders who favor small gov’t, conservative judges, low taxes, and strong military.
I agree. As with my own daughter, I do NOT find it admirable to have sex before marriage. However, as with my daughter, I’m glad she is keeping the child and trying to do what is right. Unknown if marriage is the right option - don’t know any of the players personally, so I’ll leave that issue in the family’s hands.

I've been around the track more times than I care to think about it, and I've still managed to keep my moral beliefs intact. How about you?

You don't know what Mom taught this daughter. Sometimes, even kids who have been taught to use birth control don't do it. Kids are kids and sometimes they do dumb, risky and impulsive things even if their parents have cautioned them against dumb things.
Yes. She made a bad and foolish decision. But she is standing up and taking responsibility for her actions and her baby.
We cannot demand that people never screw up. The best we can do is teach them how to deal with the fall-out with grace and dignity and do the right thing.
I agree, adoption is a good choice for many 17 year old mothers, but in this case, with a mom who is on a Presidential ticket, that is not in the cards for this baby. It was either a shotgun wedding or single-momhood for Bristol, but no way was someone going to adopt the child of the VP who is a potential future President.
