Evangelicals rally behind Palin after pregnancy news

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Key evangelical leaders rallied to Sarah Palin's support Monday amid news that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was having a child.

Sarah Palin confirmed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

"Before, they were excited about her, with the Down syndrome baby," conservative, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said. "But now with this, they are over the moon. It reinforces the fact that this family lives its pro-life values."

Palin and John McCain oppose abortion and have supported promoting abstinence in schools -- which would seem to make Bristol Palin's pregnancy an inconveniently timed development.

But she is keeping the child, a fact that could make the Alaska governor -- whose candidacy has been enthusiastically embraced by evangelicals who regard her as one of their own -- even more popular among that key GOP voting bloc. Watch more on Palin's announcement »

"Fortunately, Bristol is following her mother and father's example of choosing life in the midst of a difficult situation," Family Research Council president Tony Perkins said. "We are committed to praying for Bristol and her husband-to-be and the entire Palin family as they walk through a very private matter in the eyes of the public."

Evangelical leader Richard Land also backed Palin completely.

"This is the pro-life choice. The fact that people will criticize her for this shows the astounding extent to which the secular critics of the pro-life movement just don't get it," Land said in a statement.

The Evangelicals understand this stuff even if a lot of FR folks don’t.

I wanted to post this on the Saints of Free Republic thread, but since that has been locked, I’ll post it here.

Who was justified, the righteous Pharisee, or the repentant publican?

“Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner” (Lk 18:13).

Maybe that was a penitent REpublican.

The only people who think you follow the steps carefully in some Dr Spock manual to produce perfect kids are those who have never had any.

I have 4 children, 12 grand children and 2 great grands and couldn't agree with you more.

The libs are speechless, this does not compute, and they are blowing up.

Barak: "What the heck's going on, Michelle??? I mean, these are bitter, angry people clinging to their bibles! You told me they'd be sewing a scarlet letter on her dress by now!"
Biden: "Barry, calm down! It's the best of times, it's the worst of..."
Barak: "Oh, shut up, Joe!"

I think she’ll be speaking. I haven’t checked the news lately, but last i heard there was some flooding (duh), but nothing catastrophic like Katrina. People can correct me if I’m wrong about that.

What should enthuse you is the Democrat use of this information and what it says about their assumptions about the rest of us and especially about Evangelicals. They truly don’t know which end of the rifle the round comes out of and are aiming them by looking into the muzzles. When they pull the trigger it is not necessarily fatal to them because their brains are at the other end of their bodies.

Obviously it didn't take.

Bella and Juno were two movies last year that featured young women (one was a high school girl) who face a crisis pregnancy and decide to give birth despite the temptation of abortion. In Bella, a young Christian man encourages a young woman to keep her child. In Juno, a teen goes to an abortion mill, but walks out after hearing someone’s fingernail tapping on a table. earlier, a pro-life protester had told her that her baby has fingernails.

I think the daughter looks irresponsible but that the media is reaching in a disgusting fashion to blame the mother for the daughter’s judgment and to cast aspersions on her values because of this.

****************************

People who get pregnant outside of marriage are called "the Democratic base" by the Democrats / Leftists.

Let the MSM insult their base all they want. We'll just get more of the PUMA base.

Hey MSM! "All your base are belong to us!"

Obviously if Bristol Palin had followed abstinence she wouldn't be pregnant.

Obviously if she and her boyfriend had practiced some form of birth control she wouldn't be pregnant, either. Didn't mom ever have that little talk with her?

Doesn't this just prove that when abstinence is tried, it works?

So...you want Bristol Palin to get up there and say, "Do what my mom says, not what I do?"

Imagine if Chelsea Clinton shows up on Fox News Wednesday night ... and explains first that children need to be left alone during political campaigns... second that children don’t always do what their parents say... and third proves it by announcing her endorsement of McCain/Palin.

Oh my; that would be priceless.

That a seventeen year old, pregnant, unmarried girl is not someone to be raised up as a role model, nor is it an example is sterling parenting. Judging from some of the posts around here it is.

I’ve always heard how hypocritical pro-lifers are, because they’ll march against women’s right to have abortions, but the second they or their daughter has their own “unplanned” pregnancy, they’re scheduling an abortion.

I've heard of one case like that, many more like the Palins. They are doing the right thing and debunking the stereotype once again, by walking the walk. No wonder the libs hate her so.

So you're certain that 100% of teens who become pregnant never had a little talk with mom or dad? You make no allowances for the possibility that kids do stupid things sometimes that go against what their parents have taught them? We can just assume that since Bristol is pregnant, Sarah never told her there was anything wrong with having premarital sex?

So...you want Bristol Palin to get up there and say, "Do what my mom says, not what I do?"

That would actually be a pretty good thing to do. That is, for Bristol to say, hey, I did something stupid, I ignored mom's advice and I ended up pregnant. I made a mistake, but I'm taking responsibility for it by marrying the father and protecting my baby's life.

Unmarried minors getting pregnant doesn’t put me over the moon. Maybe thats just me. I will say this though. I don’t think it necessarily reflects on her as a mother. I’m sure she did teach her child all the right values but as any parent knows, kids do stupid and risky things and often rebel against the parents. I would say that this whole thing reflects on the daughter not the mother,

I'll climb on the Soapbox with you on this one : I hope the pregnant daughter now realizes the impact her actions have had on her family. When you carry your family name wear it with pride and honor. A moment of lust and selfishness can have a profound impact in many ways. Thankfully the parents are solid and forgiving. You can do only so much as a parent. Free will will take it's course. So I agree, this reflects on the daughter although naturally the parents will feel they failed in some fashion.

Or putting up the child for adoption. I really don’t think the average 18 year old couple is financially able to raise a child without government assistance or parental support.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Some of the comments I’ve seen today should come with links to books with titles like “I am the perfect parent, an autobiography”
