John McCain Selects Alaska Governor Sarah Palin As Vice Presidential Running Mate

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.

Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

Yep! I can get behind this.
Smart choice.
I’ll admit, likely better than Romney.

This was a good pick.
The Obama camp is naturally going to attack her, saying that she has less experience in office than Obama, so McCain’s charges are invalid.

But then hopefully McCain already has the retort lined up, that it’s not about how long you’ve been in office, but what you’ve accomplished since you’ve been there.
Then they will list off Palin’s numerous accomplishments and reforms over the past two years and contrast it with Obama big fat nada.

Then if they’re real sharp, they can stick it in with “Obama has proven he can deliver a good speech, but he can’t deliver results.”

Thi is a great choice. The Dems are going to attack her on lack of international and lack of Washington insider experience. But if you look at what she has done, you can see why McCain picked her. She cleaned up the Republican party in Alaska. She’s a wonderful woman with 5 kiddies, and she refused to abort her fifth who was found in the womb to have downs. What a woman!!! She was the star point guard in her HS championship team...she owned her own business...she was a mayor who cut property taxes 60%!! ... she became govern of Alaska and sold off the Governors personal 2.6 Mil jet... shes a beauty to boot. And she hunts and fishes and takes no guff. If you want a maverick reformer who is a true believer..she’s your gal!! Go Palin!!

In one fell stroke, McCain just won the election of 2008 and set up the Republicans to win in 2012 against Hillary.

This will make Hillary’s head explode.

Actually, quite the opposite. She doesn't want Obama to win. She wants to run in 2012. She'll like this quite a bit, and by 2012, the Democrats will have to pick her to counter Palin's influence with women voters.

Color me stunned once again. Shocked! This is the stupidest move McCain could make. Not only is her only attribute her sycophancy to the media, she has a serious legislative investigation going here (I’m from Juneau) over abuse of power. Wow. It’s like watching “Being There” again. Chance the idiot gardner is going to b president! Urrrg.

In the time honored tradition of FreeRepublic, I hereby suggest that no Sarah Palin thread is complete without an obligatory photograph of Governor Vice President Palin!

I refuse to allow Obama to force me to vote for McCain - the latter backstabber will never have my support. With Palin, I will support the GOP ticket IN SPITE of McCain's presence on it. Palin puts 2012 into play for conservatism.

Same here. All the McCain pushers here didn't sway me one bit - in fact, just the opposite since they acted just like liberals.

If Palin is the real conservative the articles say she is, I might join in as well.

Well said. I’m facing the possibility of actually having to support a ticket that Sen. McCain is on.

Yuck.

Are there enough clothespins in the Commonwealth of Virginia to put on my nose? Is there enough whiskey in our ABC stores?

This is a gutsy pick, and stands in stark contrast to Joe Biden. Sen. McCain — this conservative is satisfied. You have my support.

Excellent. I think whichever party is most united, or least disunited in November will win. I was a lukewarm McCain supporter, but from what I've read about Palin so far(pro life, lifetime NRA, and the ethics reforms she has pushed in AK), I think she is a smart choice. And picking a young woman could be a stroke of political genius.

And, he changed the news focus immediately after Obama's Plywood Temple was disassembled.

“a Sand Point Idaho girl” I just heard from a Idaho caller on the Dennis Miller show... She will chain saw, ride a horse or snowmobile, a tough chick... beauty pageant ... studied communications ... was interested in being a sports announcer... plays hockey... runs marathons... hunts & fishes...

To say nothing about her choosing life for her Down’s baby...

Oh, and when CBS news confirmed this with her parents, they found them out caribou hunting, and there’s a picture on the web of Sarah with a caribou, too.

I predict a 10% JUMP, not a bounce, for McCain due to this choice.

Her biggest role as VP will be holding up the applause sign. We still get McAmnesty who supports amnesty for millions of third world law breakers and their relatives. This will be the biggest issue for the downturn of this country.

I hope Palin is prepared to be viciously demonized by the Democrats and the MSM for the next 4 to 8 years.

If McCain is elected, Palin will be the presumptive Republican presidential nominee in either 2008 or 2012 (depending on whether or not McCain decides to run again after one term). The Democrats cannot allow a Republican to be the first woman President. They simply cannot allow it. The feminazis will be the most vicious of all.

Picture what the Democrats and MSM did to Quayle (painting him as an idiot) and Cheney (painting him as an evil fascist) and multiply it times a factor of 100.

Expect the Democrat controlled Congress to launch investigations of her every other week with repeated demands that the Justice Department appoint an independent prosecutor to prosecute her for whatever imagined crimes that they can come up with. It is going to be long and ugly.

Women are already pissed at Obama and the MSM.

The MSM doesn't know how to handle it. I've read headlines that actually say, "McCain picks young vice-president" instead of what it should read, "McCain picks female vice-president".

Yes, I DID laugh out loud! And I'm still laughing! Thank you!

And by the way, a whole lot of the PUMAs are, at this very moment, enthusing over Palin. You can check it out for yourself HERE.

Here's to you!
