LAKE FOREST, Calif. When John McCain and Barack Obama appear on the same stage today, they will vividly demonstrate the reach that has made the Rev. Rick Warren among the most significant evangelists of his generation.
He's a megastar who leads the nation's fourth-largest church and reaches thousands of ministers through the Internet and crusades against poverty and AIDS. That globe-trotting work and his successful book "The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?" puts him at the vanguard of a movement that inspires young, socially conscious Christians.
But his willingness to soft-pedal political issues once central to U.S. evangelicals, such as opposition to abortion, has opened him to criticism that he has strayed from his calling to spread the Gospel.
Today's forum also is a sign of religion's importance in the 2008 presidential campaign, and the emergence of a new style of evangelical leadership on the national stage that is not tied to a single party and has broadened its social agenda beyond that of the religious right.
"This is absolutely a changing of the guard, and it suggests that the new guard of the evangelical movement is able to generate the attention and focus of both parties," said D. Michael Lindsay, a sociologist at Rice University and author of "Faith in the Halls of Power: How Evangelicals Joined the American Elite."
Warren personally invited the two candidates "friends of mine" via their cellphones. His event at the Saddleback Church will be broadcast live on CNN and Fox News Channel and streamed on the Web. It has among its aims "helping the church regain credibility and encouraging our society to return to civility," he said.
It's likely that fans and critics will be watching closely...

Or, maybe you've just been herded into making sure that a liberal wins.
I have been working all weekend, and am at work right now.
Can I get back to you folks later?
“Or, maybe you’ve just been herded into making sure that a liberal wins.”
Too bad Keyes and Barr didn’t try early grassroots primary challenges rather than attempt protest campaigns now that it’s too late. Maybe people will start trying to think a few moves sooner. This time around, I was scoffed for trying to agitate for early campaigns.
If McCain limps into the White House with a lame VEEP, we need a primary challenge in 2012.
Hahahahahaha!! Funny post. You and those who agree with your assessment could easily hold your convention in a broom closet — and you wouldn’t even need to remove the brooms. ;)
Thanks for weighing in. It’s fun to hear from folks who march to a [waaaaaaaay] different drummer.
CBN is posting another separate interview from last night with obomination where he says this is not the case. CBN needs to be updated with the FACTS.
Well, that’s not exactly how it happened, but whatever.
Should a used a bedliner........:o)
Funny stuff WD !! Girl Friday just laughed herself silly !
Stay safe !
Thanks for the summary. So, what would you say was the final score?
I didnt get to watch it- i went to watch brett favre’s debut with the jets instead (free tickets and all that).
be careful who you judge, my friend, as well as who you quote. In that day, many will say, “Lord, Lord”, but He will end up saying to them, “Depart from me — I never knew you.” We are ALL flawed failures, without the blood of Jesus.
That includes all the judgmental so-called believing “Christians” right here on FR.
Wonder no more...
So let’s see Grandma. Your standard for whether someone is a true Christian, a believer in Jesus, is whether they interview the “right people” from their church? Really? Is that in the Bible somewhere? I’ve never seen it. All these so-called Christians on FR like yourself sure are quick to judge this Pastor without any Christ-like perspective or attitude whatsoever. Judge not, that you not be judged yourself.
This interview on TV has nothing to do with any kind of fruit or measure of Pastor Warren’s faith in Jesus. It is his life, and the word of his testimony that counts. I believe he is genuine in both. He may not look like Billy Graham or preach like Billy Sunday, but he’s proclaiming the gospel of Christ to a dying & lost world just the same, regardless of all the criticism he’s receiving about getting involved with politicians.
Let’s be careful to think and act and talk and live as Jesus would have us do. Criticizing a man of God in this way isn’t biblical or a godly position to take, unless you have heard him yourself with your own ears denounce or defame the name of the Lord (which no one has).
Here’s a link to the entire broadcast (broken up into parts): http://trevinwax.com/2008/08/17/obama-mccain-with-rick-warren-at-saddleback-forum-video/
BTW, did you notice the stark careful avoidance by media to address the faux use of Matthew 25:40 by the Obamessiah? ... I mean, if he wants to draw our attention to doing for the 'least of these' perhaps he ought to note what 25:40 says reagrding doing it to the least thus doing it to Jesus, as in Obama's prtoection for the killing-by-neglect of alive born infants who survive abortion attempt! [ On March 30, 2001 Obama was the ONLY Illinois senator who rose to speak against a bill that would protect babies who survive late-term abortion. He lectured that to recognize the personhood of these struggling babies would be anti-abortion legislation thus he would not support the bill because it would invoke the 14th Amendment for their protection outside the womb when they are not successfully murdered just inside the womb!!! If that killing-by-neglect isn't exactly the sort of thing Jesus was addressing in the previous verses, perhaps Obamessiah would teach us the difference?]
OK amen and what’s your point “bro”!
Aren’t you making here a kind of rough unspecific judgement?
No one on earth is beyond criticism ,no one else than J.CHRIST(for a christian)is the Messiah(even OUSSBAMA).
Thanks
Ummmm...You did?
Can you explain what someone means when they “uhhh...er...the..the” their way through a sentence?
Ahhh, now it’s much clearer.
I knew I should have taken sych...psike...spike...some headshrinker courses.
(for those that have had their humor gland removed, the above was me poking fun at myself...I really know how to spell psychology)
If Alan Keyes is such a “visionary” why can’t he envision how badly he is going to get his butt handed to him in every office he runs for?
So, what would you say was the final score?
I believe Mac won some undecideds last night, made conservatives less nervous.
Or how much money that could have been funneled to more worthy candidates or causes goes down the sewer.
What is it with Nobama’s head cocked over? Is it his way to look “sincere” or just like a T-Rex before they eat something.
