“Palestinian carrying six pipe bombs arrested near Nablus”
By YAAKOV KATZ AND JPOST.COM STAFF
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “An 18-year-old Palestinian was arrested Sunday afternoon at the Hawara checkpoint near Nablus after military police on duty discovered he was carrying six pipe bombs, an ammunition cartridge and bullets, and a bag of what appeared to be gunpowder.
Cpl. Ron Bezalel of the military police’s Taoz Battalion told Army Radio that the youth had sent his bag through the checkpoint’s X-ray scanner. When the explosives were discovered, the troops on duty immediately implemented the protocol for stopping a terror suspect.
“It’s routine to find bombs at this checkpoint... every day, we find knives and other weapons,” Bezalel said.”

“13 killed in train station bombings in Algeria”
ALGIERS, Algeria -
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Both devices appeared to be remote-controlled.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Algeria’s al-Qaida affiliate, al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa, is known to be active in the area.
The French engineer, working on a project to boost the number of rail lines at the station, was killed as he prepared to leave the site in a car, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media. The man’s Algerian driver was also killed. France’s Foreign Ministry said it was in contact with Algerian authorities about the attack but provided no other details.
The second bomb came about five minutes later. Eight soldiers and three firefighters were killed in that explosion, the official said. Several others were wounded, though the exact number was unclear.
The North African nation’s Islamic militants have mounted several attacks over the past week. On Wednesday, a suicide attack on a military barracks and a second bombing at a cafe shook a beach neighborhood outside the Algerian capital, wounding six people. A day later, a roadside bomb killed six soldiers in the city of Boumerdes....”
An early morning high-speed chase Saturday from Bell County to Travis County led to the discovery of a number of explosive devices, ammunition, a large rifle and a handgun in the car of a Morgan's Point man.
At about 1:45 a.m., Morgan's Point Police came across a suspicious vehicle near the fuel tanks at the Morgan's Point Marina. A man inside the red late-model Ford Mustang was ducking down and officers say he was reaching under the seat. As a safety procedure, officers started to back away from the vehicle before the driver took off in the car.
A chase ensued through neighborhoods in Temple, through State Highway 317 into Belton, then onto Southbound I-35 through Williamson County and Travis County. Belton Police, State Troopers and Williamson County and Travis County deputies all assisted in the chase. The chase finally ended south of Austin when the suspect crashed his vehicle. When officers approached the man, the suspect shot himself in the face, police said. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for surgery.
The Austin Bomb Squad was called to the scene after explosives, ammunition and weapons were found in the vehicle. Officials dismantled the devices. Fort Hoods Explosive Ordinance Detachment Team was dispatched to the mans residence at 16 Hawthorne Court in Morgan's Point at about 6:15 a.m.

This evidently isn’t the Morgans Point close to Laporte.
I wonder what his name is?
Neither article stated his name, of course.
No it isn’t. However, I wonder if he is linked to the activity in Austin.
Yep.

“Hazel Blears, Communities Secretary, says sidelining of Christianity is ‘common sense’”
By George Pitcher and Jonathan Wynne-Jones
Last Updated: 2:27AM BST 09/06/2008
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “However Malaysias Prime Minister warned yesterday that Muslim extremism in Britain will grow unless the Government and society learn to understand Islam.
Abdullah Badawi claimed that the legacy of Britains imperial past has hampered its ability to appreciate its Islamic population.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, the prime minister urged Gordon Brown to allow the countrys Muslims to live under Islamic law, but also said that they must prove their worth to society.
Mr Abdullah argues that the Government must do more to ensure Muslims do not feel discriminated against if it is to tackle the rise of radicalism.
The failure to understand Muslims is driving a divide between the communities, he said.
Gordon Brown must encourage a better understanding because Britain must appreciate its Muslims.”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Mr Abdullah, who was talking on the eve of a landmark summit of world leaders, echoed the calls of the Archbishop of Canterbury earlier this year for Muslims to be able to live under sharia.
The Malaysian Prime Minister also acknowledged that Muslims must also play their part in proving their value as immigrants.”

Missed the target
Saturday 8the June 2008
Dear Family and Friends,
A new schedule of minimum wages for some categories of employment was released by a government department last week. One of the lowest in the schedule is a yard or garden worker whose minimum wage has been set at 3.2 billion dollars a month. To outsiders this may sound like a massive amount of money but in reality it is a death sentence. As I write this letter a 1 kg packet of plain hard biscuits is 9.2 billion dollars, a 2 kg packet of potatoes is 3.6 billion dollars, a 400 gram tin of baked beans is 1.8 billion dollars. By the time you read this letter all of these prices will have increased; it is likely they will have doubled within a week. On a full month’s pay a yard or garden worker cannot even feed himself for a few days; worse still, he cannot provide any food for his family, he cannot buy any clothes or shoes and cannot pay his children’s school fees. God help him if he gets sick. Perhaps the saddest fact of all is that this government stipulated minimum wage is currently worth just ten US cents a day.
After almost a decade of political turmoil and economic collapse, the vast majority of Zimbabweans are unable to cope on their own and are surviving on charity of some type or other. It may be from families in the Diaspora sending hard currency home every month, relations abroad paying school fees and medical needs or friends, churches and other well wishers sending parcels of food, toiletries, medicines and other essentials. On a much larger scale help has come from the international aid organisations who this winter were set to feed 4 million Zimbabweans - over a third of the population.
This week all aid organizations operating in Zimbabwe were ordered to immediately stop all their field operations and to re-apply for new licences. It seems none are spared from the ruling issued by the Social Welfare Minister. All are affected from school children surviving on one charitable meal a day to rural households receiving grain and food relief to people with HIV/Aids receiving life sustaining anti-retroviral drugs.
The timing of the ban on charitable assistance could not have come at a worse moment for Zimbabweans. It is winter, market gardening is minimal and vegetable growth very slow. Supermarket shelves remain largely empty. All basic goods continue to be unavailable including maize meal, flour, rice, sugar, cereals, beans, oil and many more.
This week, while Mr Mugabe, his wife and their delegation were in Rome attending a UN Food Security conference, dire news was released about Zimbabwe’s daily bread which should be growing this winter. The state sponsored Herald newspaper reported that only 8,963 hectares of wheat have been planted this winter amounting to just 13% of the government target of 70,000 hectares. Agriculture Minister Rugare Gumbo was quoted as saying: “We have missed the target, with challenges being shortages of fertilisers and fuel as well as frequent breakdowns of tillage facilities.”
Zimbabwe was often in the international news this week for diplomatic incidents at road blocks, for food insecurity, for ongoing political violence, for widespread arrests of MDC officials, activists and MP’s and for the prevention of MDC election campaign rallies. For the ordinary and very long suffering people of Zimbabwe, we are counting down the days to round 2 of the Presidential election. It cannot come soon enough and the reasons for which candidate to choose become more obvious each day.
Until next time, thanks for reading, love cathy.
