“God, I wish this were true.”

Me, too, but it’s not. Unfortunately he’s an American.

My cousin was born in Australia to American parents. She was raised in the States from about the age of 2. She did have dual citizenship until she was 21. She had to renounce her Australian citizenship at 21.

It is Australian law then. It is not U.S. law.

McCain is dual.

By Panamanian law, Panama considers him a Panamanian and there is no office he can go to renounce his Panamanian citizenship.

George Soros is running around with about 5 passports. One of those passports is U.S.

Your history teacher is incorrect. But it is a common misperception. The Constitution refers to "natural born citizen" not "native born citizen" as some history texts report it.

I think it is a little bit more complicated than that. I dont think you can interpret "natural born" in any way other than "native born" without running into complications. Like the US, many countries accept any one born in their country (irrespective of the citizenship of their parents) as a Citizen of their country. It is only at the time of majority (18) that you choose which country is your homeland.

From wikipedia:

One side of the argument interprets the Constitution as meaning that a person either is born in the United States or is a naturalized citizen. According to this view, in order to be a "natural born citizen," a person must be born in the United States; otherwise, he is a citizen "by law" and is therefore "naturalized."[5] Current State Department policy reads: "Despite widespread popular belief, U.S. military installations abroad and U.S. diplomatic or consular facilities are not part of the United States within the meaning of the 14th Amendment. A child born on the premises of such a facility is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and does not acquire U.S. citizenship by reason of birth."[6]

McCain was also born to American parents who were in the military. We have hundreds of US citizens born all over to world every year to deployed military family members. How many realize that McCain’s father was an Admiral, and that his grandfather also was an Admiral. He comes from a military family.

Everytime I think the NYT's has gone as low as it can go, it goes lower.

No need for your attitude. I stated what my prof. said. He may be wrong or he may be right or he may have read the Constitution and interpreted it this way. Hey, the Supreme Court actually said the Constitution protects porn. Does not mean I agree with the Court.

See #484.

The wikipedia snippet you posted tells half (the wrong half) of the story. Persons born to US citizens anywhere are natural-born citizens (USC 1401). Also “State Dept policy” is is not law.

Whether you are born in this country, or territories or whatever is irrelevant unless your parents are not citizens. In McCain’s case the only relevant law is USC1401 which says children of US citizens are natural-born regardless of where they are born.

I live in Panama.

The old Canal Zone was bought and paid for. No 99 year lease.

By Muslim Law B. Hussein Obama who’s father was a Muslim is a Muslim but yet he can deny it and it is not newsworthy ... The Prophet Muhammed said “Baddala deenahu, faqtuluhu” — if anyone changes his religion, kill him (cf. Bukhari vol. 9, bk. 84, no. 57).

So? Obama has dual US-Kenyan citizenship. WHEN WILL OBAMA RENOUNCE ALLEGIANCE TO A FOREIGN GOVERNMENT?

Even today, the Canal Zone is more American than Laredo.

That's not saying much.

I went to army Jungle Warfare School there in 1986 and even then the "Canal Zone" was largely defunct. But the bases handed over to the Panamanians looked like New Orleans after Katrina they'd been looted and stripped of everything including sewage pipes in the walls of buildings. Even the railroad we built to run alongside the canal was given to them and in just a matter of months the officials in charge had allowed it to decay to the point that the US Military declared it unsafe to ride and banned all Americans from boarding the durn thing. Even the Lock System itself, an engineering marvel of the world began to go bad with no maintenance or care. This is what happens when the FIRST WORLD treats the THIRD WORLD as an equal. I know that is so un-PC and more than a little arrogant but that's life.

Re: 8 U.S.C. § 1403. Persons born in the Canal Zone or Republic of Panama on or after February 26, 1904

Once again a Freeper, in about 15 minutes, does basic research that the NYT was unable to do with their entire professional staff. And there are still people who regard the NYT as state-of-the-art. Thank you for once again showing what lazy, incompetent, partisan bozos the MSM are.

However, neither of those laws overrides the Constitution.
It specifically says, “natural born,” which has only meant to date that the person must have been born natively, within the borders of the United States.

This is where it gets interesting. Anyone born in another country can be a US citizen if they go through the process. But those people cannot be president.

"No, they are just beginning the death of a thousand cuts against McCain as they did Dole. Little bits and pieces will stick."

It's right out of the Dems' playbook. Make the charges and they'll stick in some people's minds, even if later proven false.

I know a girl, born to two US citizens while on vacation in Canada, who was not considered a US citizen.

Her parents thought her US citizenship was automatic—it wasn’t, and she wasn’t a US citizen until she was in her 20’s after undoing the mess her parents had gotten her into.

I would guess she wasn’t “natural born”.
