Except the Canal Zone was under the American Flag at the time of his birth. It was, as any federal territory, administered through ovesight of the Congress of the U.S. It was as much the U.S.A. as the Arizona Territory into which Barry Goldwater was born. Had Obama been born 18 months earlier would he be denied eligibilty because Honolulu was located in a territory and not a state? The argument is silly, and on the part of the Times arrogantly ignorant.

Hawaii became a state in 1959. When was Obama born? Perhaps he is not a citizen!

My brother was born in Venezuela to American parents. He could have been either a Venezuelan citizen or an American citizen. Just by voting in an American election made him a citizen.

Would it be more accurate to say that by voting in an American election he effectively gave up his Venezuelan citizenship and confirmed his US citizenship?

Exactly. His dad was a US serviceman stationed in the Canal Zone.

I thought that if one or both parents was American, the child was also American.

Well, that sure beats two Mexicans schlepping over the border to plop a kid and declare "where's the welfare office".

Obama's biological father is a Kenyan, not an African-American. His mother was married to an Indonesian, and he even lived in Indonesia at one point. Doesn't it make him ineligible to run for a president? /s

BTW, Obama cannot say that his ancestors were slaved. Actually, being from Kenya, who knows if his ancestors were slave owners!

They could not have been citizens at the time of the adoption of the Constitution since it’s the Constitution that made them legal US Citizens. I was being sarcastic.

Yes, but he got virtually every judge confirmed that he nominated with a solid GOP Congress for 6 of his 8 years. The President is the mover on judges, not Congress. That’s why we need to have McCain, who has committed to nominating Roberts-like judges, and not Obama nominating.

The dems are not going to let a good judge get any more.

Mccain will ruin the Conservative movement.

Is this the worst thing they can find on McCain? Do they not have internet access at the NYTs?

Not only that, but the Canal Zone itself was an American Territory at the time.

(It would still be an American Territory if that great President and Statesman James Earl Carter Jr. hadn’t given it away.)

As much as I wish McCain WASN’T eligible to be President, the NYT is beyond even their usual level of stupidity with this.

Those born in Puerto Rico to parents born in Puerto Rico and even though we are US citizens, we cannot vote for President nor can we run for the Presidency.

Can this be were this is leading? Being born in Panama?

Drinking Coffee "I'm a little concerned about your definition of 'natural born' "
I was being funny... in my own mind anyway.  ;-)  First thing that popped into my mind was: "What, other than maybe Ozzy Osbourne, defines an unnatural born citizen?"
