:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Still in Control

Pervez Musharraf was calm, confident and—despite a flurry of rumors—not about to announce his resignation. Instead, the Pakistani president's "concession" to his troubled nation was an announcement that he would allow Britain's Scotland Yard to help local law enforcement agencies with their investigation into last week's assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Speaking in a nationally televised address two hours after Pakistan's election commission announced the postponement of the ballot to Feb. 18, six weeks later than had been scheduled, Musharraf was notably deferential in his remarks about Bhutto, often invoking her "martyrdom" and extolling her liberal democratic credentials. "May she go to heaven," he said. "I stand for the same things she said." Read More

“Blaze causes $2 million in damages to Lynchburg plant”

By Carrie J. Sidener
Lynchburg News & Advance
January 14, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Plumes of bluish smoke still rolled off the charred remains of the Royster-Clark fertilizer plant Monday, more than 16 hours after a spectacular fire erupted there Sunday night.

The cause of the blaze remains a mystery since what is left of the building at 2501 Mayflower Drive is still too hot to examine for clues. Half a mile of Mayflower Drive, starting at the railroad tracks and heading toward the mall, will remain closed to both cars and pedestrians until Saturday while investigators search for a cause.

Damages are estimated at more than $2 million.

Wayne Kendrick, the plant manager, was at the site early Monday, trying to make sense of the events.

“I’m at a total loss,” he said. “We will clean it up. Whether we rebuild or not, I don’t know.”

His five full-time employees had gone home hours before the fire was reported Sunday night.

“Nobody got hurt,” Kendrick said. “It’s a blessing.””

Press Release A080115a
January 15, 2008

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations, 14 suspects detained

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces detained 14 suspected terrorists today and Monday during operations targeting al-Qaeda networks in central and northern Iraq.

Monday in Kirkuk, Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist reportedly involved in the murder of a U.S. citizen and members of a personnel security detail for the Iraqi National Dialogue Council. The suspect is also believed to be an associate of an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader of the network in Kirkuk and involved in the Baghdad car bomb network. In addition to the wanted individual, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists on site.

During an operation in Baghdad today, Coalition forces captured another suspected terrorist who is an alleged associate of an improvised explosive device attack cell in Karkh. Reports indicate the individual is a former Iraqi intelligence officer and is associated with several of the suspected terrorists detained during an operation Dec. 25 for their ties to car bomb attacks (see MNF-I press release A071225a, “Coalition forces target terrorist facilitators, suicide bombers; 13 killed, 27 detained,” dated Dec. 25, 2007).

West of Muqdadiyah this morning, Coalition forces conducted an operation targeting associates of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in the northeast Diyala River Valley region. During the operation, the ground force detained four suspected terrorists and found a weapons cache inside one of the buildings. The cache contained 15 fused mortars and several machine guns and grenades, which were safely destroyed to prevent future use for terrorist attacks.

During other operations in Mosul and near Samarra today, five suspected terrorists were detained while targeting associates of an assassination cell leader and a senior level al-Qaeda in Iraq foreign terrorist facilitator.

“Iraqi and Coalition forces are making steady progress against al-Qaeda in Iraq,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “Though they remain a threat, our operations continue to deny the terrorists safe haven and diminish their manpower.”

Explosion Heard in Beirut

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

BEIRUT, Lebanon — A blast rang out across Beirut on Tuesday, and a senior Lebanese security official said the explosion occurred just north of the city.

Reuters reported that a blast hit a U.S. embassy car, according Lebanon’s LBC TV.

Gray smoke could be seen billowing near the Mediterranean coast, but the source of the explosion was not immediately known.

The security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with military rules, told The Associated Press there was an explosion in the predominantly Christian Dora-Karantina neighborhood. He gave no further details.

In the past three years, there has been a string of explosions in Lebanon targeting mainly anti-Syrian politicians and journalists.
