Disease Likely Cause of Utah Bird Deaths
Published: 1/4/08, 6:05 PM EDT
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - About 1,500 dead birds that have washed up on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake may have been killed by avian cholera, an expert said.
Dead grebes, ducks and gulls were being sent to the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis., for examination.
“If I was a betting man, I would bet it was cholera,” Tom Aldrich, a migratory-bird expert at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said Wednesday.
Avian cholera doesn’t affect humans, but people shouldn’t pick up carcasses or let their dogs chew on them, Aldrich said.
The disease, which poisons the blood, spreads when birds are overcrowded and food supplies are short. Death occurs so quickly that birds can fall from the sky or die while eating without showing signs of sickness.
Aldrich said outbreaks have occurred on the lake every few years since the 1990s. About 30,000 eared grebes at the lake were killed by avian cholera in 2004.

It goes against religious taboos in Iraq to involve women in fighting, but three recent suicide bombings carried out by women could indicate insurgents are growing increasingly desperate.
The female suicide attacks come as U.S.-led coalition forces are increasingly catching militants suspected of training women to become human bombs or finding evidence of efforts by al-Qaida in Iraq to recruit women, according to military records.

SAN FRANCISCO
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A spokesman at the Pentagon said Friday that the Navy was reviewing the judges ruling to determine its next move, which could include an appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Despite the care the court took in crafting its order, said the spokesman, Cmdr. Jeff Davis of the Navy, we do not believe it struck the right balance between national security and environmental concerns.”

Coalition forces capture Special Groups facilitator; disrupt criminal network
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition forces captured a suspected Special Groups facilitator early Saturday during operations to disrupt criminal element networks in the Qasarin area, north of Baghdad.
The targeted individual was reportedly a financial facilitator in the Qasarin area and aided in the planning of attacks on Coalition forces throughout the Diyala Province. The wanted individual was also reported to be an associate of other senior-level criminal element leaders involved in financial facilitation and attacks on Coalition forces.
Intelligence led ground forces to the target area where they captured the wanted individual without incident.
Coalition forces will continue to apply pressure to criminal networks that are not honoring al Sayyed Muqtada al Sadrs pledge to cease attacks, said Cmdr. Scott Rye, MNF-I spokesperson. Those that are honoring his pledge are contributing to making Iraq a safer place.
