:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Still in Control

Pervez Musharraf was calm, confident and—despite a flurry of rumors—not about to announce his resignation. Instead, the Pakistani president's "concession" to his troubled nation was an announcement that he would allow Britain's Scotland Yard to help local law enforcement agencies with their investigation into last week's assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Speaking in a nationally televised address two hours after Pakistan's election commission announced the postponement of the ballot to Feb. 18, six weeks later than had been scheduled, Musharraf was notably deferential in his remarks about Bhutto, often invoking her "martyrdom" and extolling her liberal democratic credentials. "May she go to heaven," he said. "I stand for the same things she said." Read More

Weird Blob Causing Big Mess in Maine

Friday, January 25, 2008

The mysterious blob.

City officials in Lewiston, Maine, are confronting a problem straight out of a 1950s horror flick as a mysterious blob has taken over a major sewer line through the town, according to a report on WMTW.com

According to city officials, the doughy, 90-foot mass is comprised of grease, flour and rags, and has been blocking a stretch of 12-inch sewer pipe on Main Street since January 13, WMTW reports.

City officials say that they will replace the section of sewer line, at a cost of between $40,000 and $60,000, beginning this week.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — A car bomb Friday killed one of Lebanon’s top terrorism investigators who was probing assassinations of prominent anti-Syrian figures and a series of other attacks in recent years.

Capt. Wissam Eid, 31, worked for the police intelligence agency which is closely tied to the Western-backed government and had survived two previous assassination attempts. The attack also killed his bodyguard and three passers-by and wounded 37 people, police said.

Report: Detained Teen Allegedly Intended to Hijack Plane From Los Angeles to Nashville

Friday, January 25, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A teenage passenger from California was arrested in Nashville for plotting to hijack a plane from Los Angeles to Nashville, the FBI said Friday.

FBI spokesman George Bolds told The Associated Press the 16-year-old boy was removed from Southwest Airlines Flight 284 Tuesday night by authorities at Nashville International Airport and found with “suspicious” items.

Bolds said the teen had handcuffs, rope and duct tape in his bag and was believed to be traveling alone. The juvenile’s name has not been released.

“His plan had a low probability of success,” Bolds said.

Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Brandy King could not provide additional details. Airport spokeswoman Emily Richard declined to provide additional information because the passenger is a minor.

Messages left by The Associated Press with the Department of Homeland Security were not immediately returned.

The teen is in custody at Davidson County Juvenile Detention Center, where he faced state charges, but Bolds did not comment on what the charges were. He said he expects federal

White House Mulls Giving North Korea Some Wiggle Room on Nuke Declaration

Friday, January 25, 2008

By James Rosen

WASHINGTON — With North Korea almost a month overdue on its obligation to provide a complete and correct declaration of all its nuclear programs and materiel, the Bush administration — under increasing pressure from American conservatives to take a harder line with Pyongyang, or abandon the talks altogether — is now considering accepting a declaration that would be less than complete, carving out the two most contentious issues for later resolution, sources told FOX News.

The foreign diplomatic sources, representing countries involved in the six-party nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea — a group of nations that includes the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, and South Korea — told FOX News that the U.S. envoy to the talks, Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, has floated the idea of allowing the North Koreans to exclude from their declaration both their highly enriched uranium (HEU) program and their nuclear collaboration with Syria, with the understanding that these issues would be revisited later.

However, Hill said the idea he is considering accepting a less-than-complete declaration from Pyongyang is “completely inaccurate.” Such an option, Hill told FOX News in an e-mail message, “has never been under consideration.”

The sources said such a less-than-complete declaration would mirror the very proposal made by the North Koreans in November, at which U.S. negotiators scoffed, dismissing the incomplete submission as mere “research” instead of a real declaration. But the North Koreans have since “put their foot down,” said an American analyst familiar with the Bush administration’s internal deliberations, and made clear their intention to withhold the declaration unless and until the U.S. capitulates swiftly on one of North Korea’s key demands: that the country be removed, or “de-listed,” from the State Department’s list of nations that sponsor terrorism, where North Korea has had a spot since 1988. As another sign of Pyongyang’s hardening position, analysts point to its recent and abrupt cancellation of a planned working group meeting between North and South Korean officials on the establishment of a rail line between the two Koreas.

Asteroid to Make Near Miss of Earth Next Week

Friday, January 25, 2008

By Jeanna Bryner

An artist’s impression of an asteroid just barely missing Earth.

An asteroid that’s likely as big as several football fields will fly past Earth next week.

Astronomers said the space rock will be visible the night of Jan. 29 to amateur astronomers with modest-sized telescopes.

Called 2007 TU24, the asteroid was discovered by NASA’s Catalina Sky Survey on Oct. 11, 2007. It is estimated to be somewhere between 500 feet (150 meters) to 2,000 feet (610 meters) in diameter.

The asteroid makes its closest approach to Earth, 334,000 miles (537,500 kilometers), at 3:33 a.m. Eastern time (12:33 a.m. Pacific time). For comparison, the moon is an average of 239,228 miles (385,000 kilometers) away.

“This will be the closest approach by a known asteroid of this size or larger until 2027,” said Don Yeomans, manager of the Near Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

However, that doesn’t mean we won’t hear about another flyby of this nature before then.

Chavez: Colombia Plotting Attack Against Venezuela

Friday, January 25, 2008

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez on Friday accused neighboring Colombia and the United States of plotting a military “aggression” against Venezuela.

“I accuse the government of Colombia of devising a conspiracy, acting as a pawn of the U.S. empire, of devising a military provocation against Venezuela,” Chavez said.

“A military aggression is being prepared,” Chavez added, saying that Washington aims to “oblige us to respond, and later a war could be set off.”

He cited intelligence reports but did not offer evidence to support his claim.

Venezuela and Colombia have been locked in a diplomatic crisis since November, when Colombian President Alvaro Uribe ended Chavez’s mediation role with Colombia’s leftist rebels in seeking a hostages-for-prisoners swap.

Chavez warned Colombia not to attempt a “provocation,” warning that it would trigger a decision by Venezuela to cut off all oil exports.

“In that scenario, write it down: the price of oil would reach $300, because there wouldn’t be oil for anyone,” Chavez said. “The invaders would have to step over our dead bodies.”

Hitler themed hotel suite in Serbia sparks outrage

The “Mr. President” hotel offers rooms designed around current or past world leaders. Among them is the 200 dollars-a-night Hitler suite, where a portrait of the uniformed German dictator, with a swastika on his arm, hangs on the wall over the king-sized bed.

The Hitler room, number 501, is the most popular and is occupied mainly by German, Croat and Slovenian guests, Zabunovic, said. He believes that the public “has overreacted.”

Edmonton dental technician being held by North Korea

A humanitarian worker from Edmonton has been held by North Korean authorities for more than two months, the president of the city's Korean community said Wednesday.

Je Yell Kim was taken into custody Nov. 3 in a remote northeast corner of North Korea, said Chung Cho, who has known Kim for more than 20 years.

Kim, a dental technician in his 50s, has been travelling to the region for almost a decade, Cho said, using some of his own money and raising more from the Korean community.

His work has resulted in close to $2 million worth of projects, including three hospitals, two kindergartens and a daycare, he added.

Reports suggest Kim is accused of breaching North Korea's national security. The department of foreign affairs did not return calls from the CBC Wednesday.

North Korea to sell mini-subs to Iran

North Korea is preparing to sell minisubmarines to Iran, according to Japan’s Sankei Shimbun. The minisubs wouldlikely be deployed in the strategic Straits of Hormuz through which much of the world's oil transits.

The newspaper reported Jan. 18 that North Korea is negotiating to sell the submarines in exchange for debts incurred by Pyongyang, quoting a source familiar with North Korea affairs.

Teen escapes Saudi Arabia

One day Summer saw her opportunity for freedom. She ran away from the house she had been held in for so long and made the 400-mile trip to the American consulate in Jeddah.

“The day I left the door was broken,” Summer said. “It was scary to be out of the home but it was also a relief.”

“When I got to the counsel I knew I was safe and hopefully thought that one of these days I can come to [America].”

Summer does not know whether her father is aware that she is with her mother. Since she ran away he had not called anyone to ask if she was safe. “I asked at the consulate if he had called but they said he hadn’t,” she said.

The answer is simple, unfortunately.

Some people do not want to see.
Some people do not want to hear.

Press Release A080126a
January 26, 2008

Three terrorists killed, two detained during operations targeting al-Qaeda

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces killed three terrorists and detained two suspects Friday and today during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda networks operating along the Tigris River Valley.

Intelligence reports led Coalition forces to conduct an operation Friday southwest of Samarra, targeting several individuals reportedly associated with a known al-Qaeda in Iraq meeting location.

During the operation, Coalition forces observed three armed suspects maneuvering in the target area. Coalition forces fired warning shots in an attempt to get the armed men to stop their movement, but they did not comply. Coalition forces engaged, killing the terrorists. As the ground force secured the area, they found multiple machine guns, a pistol and two barrels of ammunition.

In Tikrit Friday, Coalition forces captured the alleged senior leader for the al-Qaeda in Iraq network in the city. Reports indicate the suspected terrorist is involved in the facilitation of weapons and foreign terrorists. The wanted individual is allegedly associated with numerous al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders, as well as another suspected terrorist who was detained Jan. 21 for similar involvement in the Kirkuk network (see MNF-I Press Release A080121a, “Coalition significantly disrupts al-Qaeda networks: two killed; 18 detained,” dated Jan. 21, 2008).

During continued efforts to disrupt al-Qaeda operating in northern Iraq, Coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist this morning while targeting an alleged leader for the network in east Mosul.

“Iraqi and Coalition forces will continue to target, disrupt and eliminate terrorist networks conducting attacks against the Iraqi people,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman.

US military says wanted militant killed in Pakistan
AFP via Yahoo News ^ | January 26 2008 | AFP
Posted on 01/26/2008 2:14:51 AM PST by Berlin_Freeper

The US military in Afghanistan said that a Taliban-linked militant leader wanted by Washington had been killed in neighbouring Pakistan.

Darim Sedgai was ambushed by unknown gunmen on January 16 and died of his wounds, the military said in a statement.

The military described him as a “powerful commander” linked to a top Taliban leader, Siraj Haqqani, but did not provide any further details of the incident.

The US military here reportedly announced a 50,000-dollar bounty for Sedgai in October last year, saying he was wanted for his ties to Taliban and Al-Qaeda militant groups.

Sedgai was the third rebel commander in Haqqani’s network to die in recent months, the statement said.
