The Romney backlash: Conservatives are coming home
The New Hampshire Union Leader ^ | 12/26/2007 | Union Leader Editors

Posted on 12/25/2007 9:24:16 PM PST by tj21807

"THERE IS A reason Mitt Romney has not received a single newspaper endorsement in New Hampshire. It's the same reason his poll numbers are dropping. He has not been able to convince the people of this state that he's the conservative he says he is.

Like a lot of people in New Hampshire, we wanted to believe Romney. We gave him the benefit of the doubt. We listened very carefully to his expertly rehearsed sales pitch. But in the end he didn't close the deal for us. Now, two weeks before the primary, the same is happening with voters....

...In this primary, the more Mitt Romney speaks, the less believable he becomes. That is why Granite Staters who have listened attentively are now returning to John McCain. They might not agree with McCain on everything, as we don't, but like us, they judge him to be a man of integrity and conviction, a man who won't sell them out, who won't break his promises, and who won't lie to get elected."

I would take McCain over Romney or Rudy anyday. And Huckabee. I would vote Thompson or Hunter first.

I do not think that I will ever understand the constant media assault on Mitt Romney.

I’m used to it....I’ve never understood the constant media assault on common sense either.

Meanwhile, the old media continues to prove themselves to be more and more...irrelevant, and the circulation numbers for newspapers, ratings for news programs, and their advertising revenue verify it.

Does this mean the “Fred is too old” argument is now officially invalid?

I hope the Thompson campaign see's this and some how can try to take a few days before Iowa and spend some time in NH, this is a opening for Fred in NH.
People at the Thompson campaign ? please ? please hear this ? this is a opening for Fred in NH, please take the opportunity at this chance and use it to your advantage.
I don't think it's going to hurt Fred if he spends a few days in NH before the Iowa caucus.

Yes, this argument that " Fred is to old, tired " is just that, BS.
Wasn't there a Democrat candidate a few election cycles ago that was old ?
I am tying to remember who it was.
Wasn't Reagan 69 when he entered office in 1981 ?

Reagan was born 2/6/1911 - so you’re right, he was almost 70.

I love how the article trys to point to newspaper endorsements as being a reason against someone.

Some people in journalism are so far gone in regards to arrogance it’s mildly amusing while still being thoroughly nauseating. Reminds me of comments I’ve heard journalists make in the past of being on par in value to society with American soldiers.

Telling the truth about Romney is more like it.

Romney is a victim of his record not his religion. I think the 1994 Senate Campaign audio that I think the Log Cabin Republicans who supported him then was devastating. Mitt Romney for 12 years took the following positions.

I am not with Reagan-Bush, I was an independent then.
Promoting open homosexuals in the military. Saying he would do better than the Cape Cod Orca.
We should leave Roe v. Wade alone, it’s good law.
He campaigned that I have stood up to religious right and other extremists in my party.
Says he stood up to special interests like the National Rifle Association.
He excluded the Boy Scouts from the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics due to political correctness.
He started government mandated health care in Massachusetts.
Didn’t lift a finger to stop a 4-3 court decision that twisted the constitution into a pretzel that said he and the legislature had to approve homosexual marriage.
Did nothing about sanctuary cities in Massachusetts and hired illegal alien contractors, just fired them this month after 2 years of questions.
I don’t think Massachusetts was run any different under his administration than it was under Weld or Carlucci.
Bain Capital, hia investment group is deep in bed with the Chinese. Do we believe he will do anything about China’s currency manipulation, hegimony, or huge trade surplus with the U.S.

Why Paul Wyrich, Bob Jones, and James Dobson would consider backing this guy is unbelieveable, their only reason could be to stop Guliani. He has money and probably a better organization.

He is too new and unreliable to the conservative cause. I say let Mitt show how good a conservative he become the George Soros of conservatism. Help finance, speak out and promote the ideals of the pro-family, pro-constitution, pro-liberty people of this country and take on our opponents and deal with the media and left-wing critism and vitriole that comes when your in the arena.

Campaigning as a conservative for 1 year during primary season is not sufficient for my support.

I hope the Union Leader is right. Romney is a liberal and habitual liar. Even if a backstabber like McCain would shame the party and conservative movement less than he would.

...In this primary, the more Mitt Romney speaks, the less believable he becomes.

OK. Romney is not the most conservative guy in the race. He is a competent manager, a smart guy, but weak in the knees on issues that matter to conservatives.

That is why Granite Staters who have listened attentively are now returning to John McCain....

What? McCain? For a minute there I thought you were serious.

They might not agree with McCain on everything, as we don't, but like us, they judge him to be a man of integrity and conviction, a man who won't sell them out, who won't break his promises, and who won't lie to get elected."

Now, thats funny, I don't care who you are.

If you want a conservative, then support a conservative. There aren't many in the race, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick them out of the crowd. Its Hunter, or Thompson. Thompson, or Hunter. If you back someone else, you probably have your reasons, they may be valid reasons, but conservatism isn't one of them.
