"...in todays world, in which women have fought for the right to equality, alimony seems more like a kid getting an allowance from daddy and I believe it should be abolished altogether except for extremely dire circumstances where a spouse is older, cannot work at all, and for only a short term period. No man or woman should be held to being a slave to an ex-spouse after a marriage ends. That said, if we are going to have alimony laws, I believe that men and women should be held to an equal standard under the law."

No, you didn’t. Answer it the way I wrote it, which was in response to a specific comment.
That isn’t what you said. You said that if she filed for the divorce, she should get nothing.
You’d like to see that written into law?
Being abandoned, from the point of view of the abandonee, is not the same as having your father killed in circumstances not in his direct control. Let alone if he has died as a result of altruism or heroism on his part. A kid realizes, deep down, that if his father was killed in action, he died defending his country and his children.
In the first case, the kid has been implicitly told by his father that he's not working sticking around for. To grow up sane, the kid will have to find other sources of self-respect to make up for this devastating blow.
What I was trying to get at is that the law shouldn’t differentiate between men and woman I know a guy who put his wife through Wharton so she could use her degree to help in his business.Do you think he will ever get anything , not a chance .She was nice about it and agreed to accept a a 25k lump sum payment.
But that isn’t what the original poster said, was it?
We can all point to inequities, but the answer is not a blanket “the person who files for divorce loses everything”.
It's a wonder there isn't a heck of a lot more violence towards those who facilitate this type of destruction in the name of the law.
Fortunately for my ex, I'm not the violent fellow she's tried to make me out to be.
YES - Please make it 21 years retroactive.
Finally a good idea!
If I were to divorce my wife of 22 years, who has stayed at home and raised our 5 children? Alimony would be the least of what I feel I’d owe her.
Whose fault is it that the women has no work skills? Sounds like poor planning to me.
Rachel Ray is having to pay her unfaithful husband a huge settlement in their divorce.
I'm sure he earned every penny by putting up with her.

HEY!
I most folks like Rachel and he was a pervy horn dog that screwed around on her almost from day one.
Now she’s having to pay him to go away.
Seems like you missed the
“women shouldn’t go to college but get married when they are in their teens because that’s when they are supposed to start having babies and they shouldn’t work outside of the home because the best moms are stay at home moms”
threads.
Its confusing around here sometimes!
Well I am not talking about all women but more the housewife who runs the home, raising the kids, while the guys make a successful career. When the kids are 18 he can dump her, she does get half the assets but deserves her investment on his increased income. No fault divorce did this. This is not the big problem, child support is. You are of course substantially correct, but I don’t believe that kids feel any less abandoned if the father’s death was out of his control. Yes, they may not feel so directly responsible or so worthless as many kids who have deadbeat dads do, but they still feel a profound loss. And more importantly, there is still no father in the home to give guidance or a father’s discipline, no matter the cause of the loss.
So, you’d prefer your wife to put the kids in daycare from age 6 weeks and go to work, and work 40+ hours a week, in the eventuality that you might divorce, than have Mom stay home to raise the kids and have few marketable job skills.
Sounds like planning to fail to me.
Rachel Ray is an insufferable bore, untrained as a chef and worse, an untalented cook. When she opens her yap it’s like figernails on a blackboard.
You said: depends on who initiates the divorce....if the woman wants out of the marriage, then get out and make it on your own
While it is interesting that you have relatives who are 100% innocent, 100% injured parties, pure as the driven snow, faultless; taken in by sinful, demon women; who lost everything and now have not even two nickels to rub together, the answer is not to punish the person who ends the abuse by filing for divorce. This isn't the Middle East & we don't punish people for ending bad marriages. Even when they are just women.
