When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.
Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

No, but it legitimizes the Mormon church and will increase their growth (the Mormon church hasn’t grown in a long time, maybe two decades). It would be like donating money to a Madrassa or voting in a Muslim President . . . same thing. Look at the Mormon beliefs and history carefully before you say you can support a Mormon Presidential candidate. I think you will find they are a cult.
And no, there are no pentagrams on them. Yes, they are of great religious significance to us. Consequently, we do not discuss them with non-members so, our critics literally make up whatever stories they want about what these garments are like safe in the knowledge that we can only deny it. Nice, huh?
Then maybe Mitt should stop his run rather than rip apart the party for the sake of his religion and his personal ambition. He has no values anyway. He is for one thing one election and against it the next depending on what he thinks will get him the win. So why is he running in the first place. It’s just the next step on the ultimate resume for him.

Romney bought into the Media Matters, Soros, and sHrillary lies, jumped on board with the Democraps, and castigated Rush for the “phoney soldier” comment. I don’t care that he’s a Mormon. I do care that he’s either too stupid or too uniformed (or both) to do that.

That’s funny, I heard Mitt on Hugh Hewitt last night clearly refuting what Media Matters put out and clearly defending Rush.
Reagan was very much a Christian. Surprisingly so given how little press was devoted to it.

Let’s step back to the election of 1960, when freshman senator John F. Kennedy threw his hat in the ring against one Richard M. Nixon. At that time, we were treated to a massive dose of hysteria over the fact that Kennedy was a (gasp!) CATHOLIC!! Worse, if he were elected, America would be ruled from the Vatican, NOT from the Oval office!!

Everything old is new again. Have we really not progressed beyond this point?? Romney isn’t running for President of the Mormon church, he’s running for President of the United States. If there is no data to prove otherwise, we must consider his candidacy on the basis of his qualifications to lead the nation, NOT on the basis of his choice of religion.
They're full of it. They have to say that so that their church groups and evangelical social circles won't accuse them of blasphemy, lest they be seen as going against the flock.
They'll pull the lever for Romney, then tell everyone they abstained or voted 3rd party. Evangelicals aren't stupid enough to let a Soviet win the election because they have some issues with Mormonism.
I thought in the primaries you are "primarily" voting for someone--not simply against someone. So the broader question is: "Why would Republican voters vote for anyone they know the base will not support?" (Be it Rudy, Mitt, or whomever?)
Yeah, clear bigotry, but the ‘always right, never wrong’ cannot see that fact so they ignore the chasm of heresies inherent to Mormonism and claim they are more Christian in their attitude because they see nothing wrong with voting for a man deeply involved in the heretical religion claiming to be ‘THE restored Christianity’ with all other sects claiming to be Christians are in apostasy.
I think you can safely say: The faith of our founding fathers. No JWs, Scientologists, "Christian Science," LDS, Wiccans, New Agers, self-improvement types, etc. among them. (And they didn't do so bad in the founding of this country, did they?)
Mormons make up 2% of the general poplulation. Of those only about 1/2 are practicing Mormons and even among that one percent of practicing Mormons - there is a higher percentage of young (not voter age) - and of those about 65% are Republican.
So if every practicing Mormon gave up voting Republican, we’d lose somewhere between .4% and .7%. We should be more concerned about losing the gay vote, Hispanic vote and Black vote. Since when do we pander to special interest groups?

Reagan was a Christian but NOT an evangelical. He did not attend church regularly for most of his life.
Unless you use the word evangelical to describe any Protestant who identifies themselves as "Christian".
