A Mormon in the Oval Office?
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2007 | Robert Novak

When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.

Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

Do you think the WP will ever bring up Barak Hussein Obama’s Muslim past?

If he’s not a true, blue, card-carrying Christian-—forget it.
Evangelicals will never vote a Mormon for any office...it’s a matter of principle.

I would have supported Mitt, and Fred would not have been necessary, if Mitt had been a proven, solid, long-time conservative.

But I would have done so in spite of the fact that the Mormonism issue renders Mitt unelectable, a loss of maybe 5% vote margin that no Republican can afford to give away.

I'm not against him because he's a Mormon, though I can understand the sentiment.

I'm against him because he's a slickster. I don't trust him.

The comments are great.

I loved this one:

“anniejoyce wrote:

Secondly, I could not vote for a Mormon. ......... Thirdly, he calls his wife a “babe.” The biggest, however, is that he will say anything at anytime to get elected. This guy gives me the creeps.”

It will be very hard to have a President who wears “underwear” with a Pentagram on it to represent the evangelical Christians in America.

If he gets the presidency, will he give all the high-ranking cabinet positions to the Osmonds? (Lame joke, I know.)

Makes me wonder if Obama is an al-Qaeda plant.

Or maybe Obama has a fake beard he puts on to become Osama. :-P (Palpatine also masqueraded around as Darth Sidious.)

Funny stuff in the HughHewitt.com comments.

This fits Mitt perfectly!

WAITER Can I take your order sir?

MITT I think that’s certainly a possibility. Were I to order, I would choose food and something to drink as well.

WAITER Yeah, but what do you want?

MITT I don’t think I can put it to you any more clearly. I meant exactly what I said.

HUGH You want a turkey sandwich and a cup of coffee, right, Mitt?

MITT Thank you, Hugh, I believe in this cirumstance you best represent what I might choose under certain conditions.

As long as the press can keep the dialogue with Mitt focused on his religion, rather than on any substantial explanaton of his politics, the longer it shall be until his real positions on any number of issues will be made known.

It matters exactly JACK what Mitt’s specific religion may be, so long as his commitment to the America of thrift, industry and justice to all remains intact. But we are not offered this side of him by the press.

“Evangelicals will never vote a Mormon for any office...

Yep, I suspect that’s true.

And as a conservative, non-denominational Christian from Bible-belt
Oklahoma, I was SHOCKED to hear the invective hurled against the
possibility of a Mormon in the White House on Los Angeles’ major
Christian talk-radio station, KKLA 99.5FM even a couple of years ago.

Maybe having a Mormon in The White House is not my own personal
first-choice.
And Mormonism ain’t my theological cup-of-tea.

But if Romney ends up on the ticket (Pres or VP) for the Nov. 2008 election...
I’ll still be voting “R”...considering all the possible alternatives
that will appear on the “D” ticket.

“Evangelicals will never vote a Mormon for any office.”

And they should be ashamed of themselves for it. It’s just pure bigotry against Mormons.

What the heck is Mitty trying to say while speaking out both sides of him mouth. It reminds me of the following paragraph:

While my better instincts counsel me to follow a policy of laissez-faire, there are a couple of Gov. Mitt Romney’s statements I feel I cannot let pass. I guess I should start by saying that when I hear Mitt say that censorship could benefit us, I have to wonder about him. Is he totally stroppy? Is he simply being harebrained? Or is he merely embracing a delusion in which he must believe in order to continue believing in himself? I mean, I have to laugh when Mitt says that we should derive moral guidance from his glitzy, multi-culti, hip-hop, consumption-oriented strictures. Where in the world did he get that idea? Not only does that idea contain absolutely no substance whatsoever, but if we are to embrace diversity, then we must be guided by a healthy and progressive ideology, not by the raving and lecherous ideologies that Mitt promotes. I wouldn’t judge Mitt’s helots too harshly. They’re just cannon fodder for Mitt’s plot to hammer a few more nails into the coffin of freedom. When it comes to Mitt’s animadversions, I honestly assert that we have drifted along for too long in a state of blissful denial and outright complacency. It’s time to embark on a new path towards change. The sooner we do that, the better, because perennial crybabies like Mitt wouldn’t fare well without a legal skirt to hide under. What’s my problem, then? Allow me to present it in the form of a question: Will peeling back the onion of Mitt’s self-centered, frightful homilies cause Mitt to shed tears or will it merely enhance his desire to trivialize the issue? He doesn’t want you to know the answer to that question; he wants to ensure you don’t lead him out of a dream world and back to hard reality. To close, let me accentuate that if we pursue virtue and knowledge, we shall not only survive Gov. Mitt Romney’s attacks; we shall prevail.

....This complaint letter was generated at http://www.pakin.org/complaint/

huh?

If he thought it would get him more votes he just might.

After all, when he invited press to his vacation home, he served them beer.
