Edwards: Americans should sacrifice their SUVs
Associated Press ^ | 08/29/07

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.

Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.

Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.

He says jobs that provide equipment for America's defense need to be made in the United States.

Apparently the Fundamentalist Pagan movement IS sacrificing OTHER peoples’ SUVs. They commit arson all the time for Pope Al Gore Junior and his Global Warming Scare.

"Back in spring 2001, when I spent two days in an SUV with Edwards driving the back roads of his state and going to town meetings, he was already honing his populist I’m-the-son-of-a-millworker speech." --Meryl Gordon, in February 23, 2004 issue of New York Magazine.

My wife was hit by three trucks on the interstate. One hit her from the rear. This spun her around, and a second and third creamed her as she spun. She got out without a scratch. She was driving a Suburban. If she had been in anything else, she would have been killed. I'm going to keep her driving Suburbans.

Didn't SUVs originate from trucks in the first place? I know my 1989 GMC Suburban was built at a GM truck & bus plant. I like to say my SUV dates from the days when they were trucks. It is kind of funny when I park it next to one of the "big" newer SUVs. The first time I drove it, I parked next to a Jeep Grand Cherokee and when I got out, I had to laugh.

John Edwards sets a whole new standard for hypocrisy. I just can't believe he can say that stuff with a straight face.

How about giving up your 28,000-square-foot house with the indoor basketball and squash courts?

I bet if he gets called on this in any serious way, he will somehow tie his SUV, jet travel, etc., to his wife. Something along the lines of his wife is sick, she needs a vehicle where she can lie down, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if her health came up as justification.

Edwards, whose convoy is often mini-van centric, had this Cadillac SRX Crossover (15 mpg) beside him in Iowa on his arrival from announcing his candidacy for president in New Orleans, according to his Flickr stream.

Go for it (Yukon)!! Last week, I bought a Chevy Tahoe and I LOVE IT! It is so solid and quiet. With the engine going to 4 cylinders when it’s cruising, the mileage is 15/22 - just as good as lots of sedans on the street.
