It looks like two new Winchester Short Magnum rounds....cant tell w/o seeing the base/primer. Definately, the one on the right is not 7.62mm x 51mm .(.308 cal.) NATO...the cartridge is too fat.(.308 cal.)

I expect the caption will be changed to “US Military leaves live ammo where children are likely to find it.”

lol. They must have thrown them at her house. That's all the new Rules of Engagement allow anymore.

This goes beyond not knowing anything about firearms.
I know virtually nothing about them myself, but it doesn’t take any knowledge to see that they weren’t USED at all! One could almost make the case that by supporting this story, one is actually pro-terrorist; because there’s no way anyone could make that kind of mistake.

C’mon now, you’re talking about media professionals. Show a little respect.
To: george76
That picture is an embarrassment, but AFP would justify it on the “inaccurate but true” principle, i.e., yes, those bullets were never fired, but other bullets WERE fired, so the picture, even if staged, represents a true event.

Uh, if those hit your house its because someone threw them at it... bullets and their casings don’t stay together once they have been fired... and for the record, don’t look all nice and pointy after they have hit something either.
To: Steve_Seattle
Well it could have happened. Who are we to question this poor womans circumstances.

I bet these are the new “extended range” rounds. You fire them from a .50 cal casing, and then, as they near their maximum range, the second stage fires to launch the actual bullet. I understand, that with a Barrett, they will take out an armored helicopter at five miles.
We should ban them.

Exactly. I know jack about guns but even I could tell that they were way too shiney and pointed to have been fired.

"Well it could have happened. Who are we to question this poor womans circumstances."
"It could have happened, therefore we'll act as if it did happen" represents the journalistic philosophy that's been routinely used against the Bush administration. For example, when Rove resigned, my local paper cited the U.S. Attorney firings as an example of his legacy, even though there is as yet nothing to link him with those firings. They also treated the fact that he was not charged in the Plame case as if he had been found guilty of "outing" her.
