“Iraqi terrorists caught
along Mexico border
American intelligence chief confirms
‘people are alive’ as a result of capture “

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “President Bush’s top intelligence aide has confirmed that Iraqi terrorists have been captured coming into the United States from Mexico.
The confirmation comes from National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, who talked about the situation in an interview with the El Paso Times recently.
“Coming up through the Mexican border is a path,” McConnell said. “Now, are they doing it in great numbers? No, because we’re finding them and we’re identifying them and we’ve got watch lists and we’re keeping them at bay.”
But, he said, “There are numerous situations where people are alive today because we caught them (terrorists).”
(Story continues below)
Intelligence officials say the numbers and details of such situations are classified, but McConnell pointed as an example to Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, who entered the United States through Tijuana, Mexico, in 2001, and later pleaded guilty to helping raise money for Hezbollah, which has been designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization.
The goal, McConnell said, is for terrorists to gain admittance to the United States, and then produce “mass casualties.”
“You’ve got committed leadership. You’ve got a place to train. They’ve got trainers, and they’ve got recruits,” McConnell told the newspaper. “The key now is getting recruits in. So if your key is getting recruits in, how would you do that?”
McConnell’s office did reveal some numbers, during fiscal 2006, there were 14 Iraqi nationals caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally, while so far in 2007, that number is 16.
“Now some we caught, some we didn’t,” McConnell told the newspaper. “The ones that get in what are they going to do? They’re going to write home. So it’s not rocket science; word will move around.”
Also revealed was that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted 60 Iraqis crossing the nation’s southwestern border in 2006 who were seeking asylum in the U.S., while that number so far in 2007 is 178.”

“Zimbabwe Inflation Rate Hits 7,600 pc”

“Zimbabwe inflation rate hits 7,600 pc”
By Sebastien Berger, Southern Africa Correspondent
Last Updated: 1:04am BST 23/08/2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Zimbabwe issued its first official inflation statistics for three months yesterday, revealing a new record high and confirming the ineffectiveness of Robert Mugabe’s price control campaign.
Figures from Zimbabwe’s Central Statistical Office showed inflation reached 7,634.8 per cent in July, the highest in the world. It was 7,251.1 per cent in June and 4,530 per cent in May, it added.
The precision of the inflation numbers is remarkable given the chaos of the Zimbabwean economy and some analysts believe the real figure is much higher.
The International Monetary Fund has predicted inflation could reach 100,000 per cent by the end of the year and Christopher Dell, the outgoing US ambassador, suggested 1.5 million per cent.”

Car carrying four men speeds past Customs entry in Port Angeles. (WA Ferry-again)
Peninsula Daily News ^ | 8-23-07 | Peninsula Daily News
Posted on 08/23/2007 10:26:48 PM PDT by NavyCanDo
PORT ANGELES - A car carrying four men reportedly sped through the U.S. Customs port of entry off the ferry from Victoria on Wednesday night.
The Port Angeles Police Department received a report through the PenCom dispatch center of the car failing to stop for inspection.
The car disembarked off the MV Coho at about 9:20 p.m. after the days last southbound sailing.
It reportedly raced past the checkpoint so quickly that nobody could determine a license plate number or even the plates jurisdiction.
The car turned left - or eastbound - onto Railroad Avenue from the port of entry, according to reports.
Police were looking for a four-door gray car or sport utility vehicle with four occupants, possibly Asian, headed east out of Port Angeles, said Sgt. Glen Roggenbuck.
Port Angeles police officers were unable to catch up with the vehicle and alerted the Clallam County Sheriffs Department and State Patrol, Roggenbuck said.
No more information was available Wednesday night. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the scene declined comment.
Customs officers check all vehicles disembarking the Coho in covered lanes between the ferry landing and Railroad Avenue.
Citizenship verification is done by U.S. officials at the Cohos Black Ball Transport terminal in Victoria before passengers and motorists board the 341-foot ferry.
Terrorist captured in 1999 On Dec. 14, 1999, Customs officers uncovered an al-Qaida-trained Algerian national, Ahmed Ressam, at the same Port Angeles port of entry.
A trunkload of bomb-making materials were found inside the rented sedan he was driving.
Ressam fled on foot, but was quickly captured by customs inspectors in downtown Port Angeles.
Ressam was tried in federal court and found guilty of plotting to blow up a terminal at Los Angeles International Airport with the explosives and gear in the car.

“DHS hid data from probers”
By Sara A. Carter
August 24, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Department of Homeland Security administrators fearing additional scrutiny concealed from federal investigators information-sharing breakdowns that left the U.S. vulnerable to terrorists, internal DHS memos and e-mails show.
The documents obtained by The Washington Times lay out how officials at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) deliberated telling the Inspector General’s Office that DHS agencies failed to share data before opting to withhold their concerns.”
OPINION:
Dear Leos and Alphabets and Special Units I’ll never know about; this note is for you.
It’s time for a pep talk.
Ignore the willfully uninformed critics.
Perk up.
Haul ass.
Nose to the grindstone.
Find those terrorists here and abroad.
Let no one (including the arm chair critics, the lame-stream-media and anti-Americans) distract you.
Buck up.
You have a job to do.
Do it.
Do it now.
I have confidence in you.
Print this note out.
Tack it on your bulletin board.
Save it in your laptop.
Tape it to your dashboard.
READ IT OFTEN.
I’m praying for you all.
(A lot of people pray for you all

YOU CAN DO IT.

“The ghost of Kitty Genovese in St. Paul
and breaking the silence in Afghanistan”
By Michelle Malkin August 24, 2007 12:39 AM
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “You remember Kitty Genovese. She was the young woman stabbed to death in Queens in the 1960s as 38 bystanders witnessed the attack but did nothing to help. Kitty Genovese Syndrome entered the national lexicon. The papers quoted one cowardly witness who explained the unwillingness to even pick up the phone to call the police: I didnt want to get involved. For every Good Samaritan willing to intervene, theres an ostrich who sticks his head in the hand while a victim cries out for help. In St. Paul, citizens and law enforcement officials are horrified by another example of Kitty Genovese Syndrome this one caught on videotape:”

“THE VALUE OF PAYING ATTENTION...
jewishworldreview.com:
Shlomit was driving on a main highway in Israel, on her way to a town inside the green line, to visit her married daughter and grandchildren. She found herself behind a large garbage truck, but, not being in a hurry and preferring not to pass on a busy road, she drove contentedly along behind him, listening to a CD of Devora Gila, a religious female Joan Baez-type singer. The yellow license plate on the truck in front of her indicated that it was owned by an Israeli. The cars of Palestinian drivers living under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority have white or green plates. There are, however, Arab-owned vehicles with yellow plates those belonging to Arab residents of East Jerusalem.
Shlomit noticed that other cars were flying by them, but a car with white plates remained steadfastly behind her. She was sandwiched between the two.
After a while, the garbage truck pulled over to the side of the road and Shlomit passed it. Something made her glance up at her rear view mirror, and she saw that the Palestinian car was also pulling over. Shlomit saw the driver get out and hand a small package to the driver of the garbage truck.
This, she thought the transfer of something from a white-plate to a yellow-plate driver was a little odd.
So Shlomit, being a good citizen, upon reaching a roadblock several miles up the road, told the story to a soldier manning the post.
“Would you mind sticking around for a few minutes?” he asked.
“No problem,” said Shlomit and settled down with a cup of coffee kindly offered by the young man in the bulletproof vest and helmet.
A few minutes later the garbage truck rolled into the roadblock lane. Having yellow plates, it should have passed through fairly easily. But the soldiers, tipped off by Shlomit, examined his cab even more carefully than usual. They found the little package and opened it.
It contained explosives. My friend Shlomit probably saved some lives that day.

“Iran’s Revolutionary Guards beat sanctions: exile”
al-Reuters ^ | August 22, 2007 | Paul Eckert
Posted on 08/24/2007 12:35:27 AM PDT by Schnucki
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON - Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards are using front groups to beat U.N. sanctions and acquire weapons and material for Tehran’s nuclear program, an exiled opponent of the Iranian government said on Wednesday.
Alireza Jafarzadeh, who accurately disclosed important details about Iran’s nuclear program in 2002, called for tighter U.N. curbs and swift U.S. action to rein in the elite corps.
“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been, consistently over the past few months, violating the United Nations resolutions 1737 and 1747, using different ways to evade the sanctions and import goods and material,” Jafarzadeh said at a news conference in Washington.
Those two sets of sanctions were slapped on Iran for rejecting any halt to uranium enrichment, a process the United States and other Western countries suspect Tehran is using to develop atomic bombs.”

“Iran Vows to Hit US ‘Heavier in Future’”
August 19, 2007
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TEHRAN — The commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards yesterday threatened to deal heavier blows in future against the United States after Washington said it may label the force a terrorist group, according to news reports.
Local press in Tehran quoted Revolutionary Guards leader General Yahya Rahim Safavi saying he could understand Washington’s ire towards the group because of their recent successes against the US.
The comments came as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad launched a new verbal assault on Israel, denouncing it as the “flag of Satan” and saying it may be facing disintegration.
Four days after reports the US was considering listing the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group, Safavi was quoted as saying in the conservative daily Kayhan: “America will receive a heavier punch from the guards in the future.
“We will never remain silent in the face of US pressure and we will use our leverage against them.”
There was no elaboration on what Safavi meant by the punch or the organisation’s “leverage.””

Iranian Paper: Iran Should Form Strategic Axis With China, Russia
In an analysis, the Iranian weekly Sobh-e Sadeq, the mouthpiece of Iranian Supreme leader ‘Ali Khamenei circulated among the Revolutionary Guards, called on Shanghai Alliance member countries to accept Iran as a member. Iran’s membership, the paper said, would create a new regional strategic axis, to include Iran, Russia, and China and this could reduce the West’s political, security, and economic maneuvering ability in the region as well as in Asia.
Another article in the paper, “China in Iran’s Foreign Policy” examines China’s policy on Iran’s nuclear issue in advance of next month’s renewal of U.N. Security Council talks on the matter. According to the article, China, despite its common interests with Iran, will find it difficult to withstand the pressure of the West, due to the huge discrepancy in the scope of its trade with the U.S. as opposed to its trade with Iran.

First Look At MiG Skat UCAV (Russian Pilotless Stealth Bomber -PICTURES)
http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story.jsp?id=news/MIG082307.xml&headline=First%20Look%20At%20MiG%20Skat%20UCAV%20%5BUpdated%5D&channel=null ^

MiG today revealed a full-scale engineering mock-up of its unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) design, nicknamed Skat (Skate). Work on the low-observable design began over two years ago, and MiG will produce a flight worthy prototype within 24-months.
The MiG program is one of two competing designs that will be presented to the Russian Defense Ministry as a strike UCAV. Sukhoi is also understood to be working on a UCAV.
MiG unveiled the program during the Moscow air show, though only a few journalists were taken off the show site to a MiG facility at the Gromov flight test research institute.
Skat has two internal weapons bays, capable of carrying air-to-surface missiles as large as the Kh-31 (AS-17 Krytpon). Possible roles include the suppression and attack of enemy air defenses.
MiG is working with a number of Russian companies and state institutes — including the 2nd Central Scientific Research Institute — on Skat. The institute is known to be closely involved in low-observable research and development.
The first version of Skat to fly is planned to be piloted in order to meet Russian flight regulations. A number of aerodynamic configurations have been wind-tunnel tested, including with small twin fins. MiG has settled on a tail-less configuration.
The single-engine subsonic design has an 11.5 meter wingspan, and it is 10.25 meters long. The UCAV has a maximum take-off weight of 10 tons, with a maximum speed of 800 kilometers per hour (497 mph) at low altitude. It is intended to carry a combat load of up to two tons, with a combat radius of 2,000 km.
The Skat will be powered by the Klimov RD-5000B, a derivative of the RD-93. Two demonstrators will be built, the second will be unmanned. The flight tests will be used to prove the design and air vehicle systems. Weapon firings will also be carried out.
