TWO MEN SENTENCED FOR FEDERAL HATE CRIMES IN UTAH
WASHINGTON Shaun A. Walker of Mill Point, W.Va., and Eric Egbert of Salt Lake City, Utah, were sentenced yesterday in federal court in Salt Lake City for their convictions on federal hate crime charges. Walker was sentenced to 87 months imprisonment, and Egbert was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment. After release from prison, each defendant will be on federal supervised release for three years. Walker is a former leader of the National Alliance, a West Virginia-based national white-separatist group; Egbert was also a member of the group.
In April, a federal jury convicted Walker and Egbert and a third defendant, Travis Massey, of the racially motivated beating of James Ballesteros, a Mexican-American, on New Years Eve 2002. The evidence at trial established that shortly before midnight, Walker, Massey and Egbert were in the OShucks Bar in downtown Salt Lake City and shouted racial epithets at several patrons and Ballesteros, who was the bars manager. As Ballesteros attempted to escort them from the bar, the defendants pulled Ballesteros outside and beat him to the ground by brutally punching and kicking him.
In addition to the assault on Ballesteros, the jury also convicted Walker, Egbert and Massey of conspiring to violate the federally protected right of Ballesteros and others to enjoy a place of public accommodation free from violence based on their race. The conspiracy charge included an allegation that Massey participated in a similar assault against an unidentified Native-American man outside the Port OCall Bar in Salt Lake City in March 2003.
Racial violence is offensive to our nations fundamental values, said Wan J. Kim, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. The Justice Department is committed to vigorously prosecuting the federal laws prohibiting violent acts motivated by hate.
The United States Attorneys Office in Utah, with the support of the FBI and local law enforcement agencies, has been unwavering in its commitment to investigate and aggressively prosecute violations of civil rights cases, U.S. Attorney
Brett L. Tolman said. People are free to express whatever ideas they choose, but they are not free to act on these ideas in ways that harm others or intimidate them in the free exercise of basic rights.
Prosecuting the perpetrators of bias-motivated crimes is a top priority of the Justice Department. Since 2001, the Civil Rights Division has charged 165 defendants in 105 cases of bias-motivated crimes.
The case was investigated by the Salt Lake City Police Department and the Salt Lake City Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlos Esqueda and Trial Attorney Stephen Curran of the Civil Rights Division.

“MS-13 LEADER SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR
PARTICIPATING IN A RACKETEERING CONSPIRACY AND RELATED CRIMES”
PRESS RELEASE SNIPPET: “Greenbelt, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced Jose Hipolito Cruz Diaz, a/k/a Pirana, age 28, of Lanham, Maryland to 35 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise involving murder, robbery, obstruction of justice, witness tampering and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. The sentence was imposed late on August 10, 2007.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said, Jose Cruz Diaz will spend most of his life in federal prison as a result of his membership in the MS-13 gang. The RICO statute is a powerful tool that allows us to prosecute gang members in federal court for the activities of the criminal organization they chose to join.”
A federal jury convicted Cruz Diaz and co-defendants Omar Vasquez, a/k/a Duke, age 29; and Henry Zelaya, age 21, on April 27, 2007 after a seven week trial. According to trial testimony, the defendants were MS-13 leaders who conspired from at least 2001 to April 2006 to operate an MS-13 enterprise in Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties through a pattern of
racketeering activity which included five murders in Maryland and one in Virginia; the use of deadly weapons including firearms, baseball bats, machetes, bottles or knives in the commission of numerous murders, attempted murders and assaults; assaults on an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador, juvenile females and rival gang members; kidnaping, robbery, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.
Witnesses testified that Cruz Diaz was the leader of the Sailors Locos Salvatruchos Westside (SLSW) clique in Washington, D.C. Vasquez was sent from El Salvador to operate all the cliques in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. On January 21, 2005 Vasquez, Cruz Diaz and other MS-13 members drove to an apartment building in Fairfax, Virginia to look for rival gang members. Two MS-13 members shot at the crowd of youths sitting outside the building, murdering one and injuring two others.
Henry Zelaya was sentenced to life in prison on July 30, 2007. Judge Chasanow has scheduled sentencing for Vasquez on September 24, 2007 at 2:00 p.m., when he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise.
To date, this office has charged 42 gang members with federal offenses, including 30 defendants charged in this RICO conspiracy case. Fourteen MS-13 gang members have been convicted thus far in this RICO conspiracy case. Edgar Alberto Ayala, age 29, of Suitland, Maryland and Oscar Ramos Velasquez, age 22, of Baltimore, were convicted at trial by a federal jury in November 2006 of the racketeering conspiracy. Velasquez was sentenced on July 23, 2007 to 37 years in prison and Ayala was sentenced to 35 years in prison on June 1, 2007. Nine defendants, all of Maryland, have pleaded guilty.”

Release A070816b
Coalition Forces Kill Three, Detain Six, Capturing a High-Priority Special Groups Weapons Smuggler
BAGHDAD, Iraq Coalition Forces captured a highly sought Special Groups weapons facilitator before dawn Thursday northeast of Baghdad.
Coalition Forces conducted a raid to capture a known weapons smuggler and distributor connected to various Special Groups. The captured high priority individual was responsible for smuggling explosively formed penetrators (EFP), Katusha rockets and other weapons from Iran into Iraq. The target was also responsible for the distribution of those weapons to Special Groups and extremist militants operating throughout Baghdad. The weapons smuggler had direct ties to senior militant leaders and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps-Quds Force.
On the approach to the objective, Coalition Forces were fired upon by three armed gunmen. Coalition Forces returned fire, killing the three gunmen.
Five others detained during the raid are suspected of distributing weapons smuggled into Iraq from Iran. Four of the detainees tested positive for explosives residue. One of the buildings searched during the raid produced money and questionable documents that were confiscated for analysis and evaluation.
Coalition troops continue to target terrorists who bring weapons and explosives, especially explosively formed penetrators, and other aid into Iraq, said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. Coalition Forces will continue their focused operations against unhelpful Iranian influence interfering in Iraq. We remain committed to dismantling terror networks that seek to kill innocent Iraqis and the security forces that protect them.

“Iran has Merkava-breaching missile”
By HILARY LEILA KRIEGER, JPOST CORRESPONDENT, AND JPOST STAFF
WASHINGTON
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Iran has developed a missile that can penetrate the armor of an Israeli-made Merkava tank and a US-made Abrams tank, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Yayha Rahim Safavi, said Wednesday.
He also said Iran has land-to-sea missiles that can hit any ship in the Persian Gulf.
The Iranian news agency Fars quoted Safavi as saying the Iranian-made Shihab-3 missile, which has a range of 2,000 kilometers, recently was equipped with a remote guidance system that allows it to be controlled even after its launch.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials in Washington welcomed reports Wednesday that the United States is set to brand the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist entity, saying the move could help dislocate “the strategic backbone” of the regime in Teheran.
The move, which the administration has yet to make official or to publicly confirm, ratchets up the pressure on Iran and indicates the US is willing to act unilaterally to stop Teheran’s nuclear program.”

BAGHDAD
Thank you, Cindy.
We just had a big Town Hall meeting in our neighborhood last night in response to a crime that has all the earmarks of a gang initiation.
VERY GOOD.
When neighbors get together and strategize; good things can happen.
Simple rule: Bad guys hate lights and noise.
They usually go somewhere else when neighborhoods have alarms,
patrols, security watch groups and lots of good lighting.

Egyptian Surgeon Held Hostage by Saudi Government Released
Saudis Grant Exit Visa to Egyptian Christian Doctor
By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries
RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (ANS) — The Washington-DC based human rights group, International Christian Concern (ICC) — www.persecution.org has told ANS that it has just learned that an Egyptian Christian surgeon that had been held captive by the Saudi government is on his way home after ICC publicized his story.
We received confirmation today that he has landed in Cairo, Egypt, and is now with his family, thanks to many calls from concerned individuals to Saudi embassies around the world, said a spokesperson for ICC.
Dr. Mamdooh Fahmy had been a surgeon at Albyaan Menfhoh Medical Center in Riyadh but had been removed from his position six months ago by the Muttawa (religious police) after it was discovered he was a Christian.
Below is his description of his arrest:
On April 12, 2005, I had a surprise visit from three Saudi officials at work. Two were in civilian attire and one was a police officer. They informed me that they were from the morals policing organization [Muttawa]. They proceeded to insult me publicly before the staff and patients of the medical center. They confiscated my wallet, cell phone and keys. They handcuffed me, shacked [sic] my legs and dragged me to a waiting car, then proceeded to my residence.
While the police officer and I remained in the vehicle, the two civilians raided my house, confiscating all written and published materials (books, notes, etc). I was then taken to the police station on where I was formally accused of being a Christian missionary and of consuming alcoholic beverages at work. I was placed in solitary confinement for five days. After my confinement they began the interrogation process. Each time I was questioned, I was cursed and insulted. The interrogator referred to me as Infidel.
A source close to the story said, It is a miracle! I cried when I heard he was on the plane.
Jeff King, ICC President, said, We are thrilled at the news that Dr. Fahmy is back home with his family after being held hostage in Saudi Arabia for almost two years. This shows how important it is for western Christians to speak up for their persecuted brothers and sisters. It was thanks to everyone who called and pressured the Saudis that our brother is home. Keep him in prayer as he readjusts to life in Egypt, which is becoming increasingly hostile to Christians as well.
Note: ICC is a Washington-DC based human rights organization that exists to help persecuted Christians worldwide. ICC delivers humanitarian aid, trains and supports persecuted pastors, raises awareness in the US regarding the problem of persecution, and is an advocate for the persecuted on Capitol Hill and the State Department.

“Six Italians shot dead in Germany”
“The identities of the victims have not yet been revealed”
ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Six Italian men have been shot dead near a train station in Duisburg, western Germany - an attack reports say could be linked to a criminal feud.
Five bodies were found in two cars outside an Italian restaurant, while a sixth man died on the way to hospital.
A German police spokesman said the victims, aged between 16 and 39, had all been shot in the head.
All six were linked to a clan involved in a long-running and deadly feud in Italy’s Calabria region, police said.
The dispute is known as the San Luca feud after the village where it began back in 1991.
This feud marks a second chapter outside the territory where these clans usually operate - this time even outside our national borders
Marco Minniti
Italian Deputy Interior Minister
Police sources said all six men were linked to the notoriously violent Calabria-based ‘Ndrangheta crime group.
Italian Interior Minister Giuliano Amato said one of the victims was thought to be one of those originally involved in the San Luca dispute.
“This man probably feared that something could have happened to him, as it is reported he was looking for guns to protect himself before the shooting happened,” he said.
“It is very likely that he was caught by those who were seeking revenge against him, before the police got to him.”
Reports say the man who was taken to hospital did not say anything before he died.
Police appeal”

Afghan, US forces assault al Qaeda in Tora Bora
Published: 08.16.07, 10:37 / Israel News
US and Afghan air and ground forces pounded al Qaeda militants for a second day on Thursday in the Tora Bora mountains close to the Pakistan border where Osama bin Laden once fled in the wake of the 2001 invasion.
The steep slopes of the mountains are riddled with cave and tunnel complexes built by Afghan and Arab fighters during the 1980s struggle against the Soviet occupation and provide an ideal hideout for guerrilla fighters. “It is a joint operation conducted by Afghan and US forces, divided by ground and air assets,” said Captain Vaness Bowman, spokeswoman for US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan. I am not one for dates so much because of the extra security that is at special events. However, Alqueda would like nothing more than to repeat the fear and carnage that they set out doing Tuesday, September 11, 2001. This year September 11 falls on a Tuesday also. The London bombings were on a Tuesday, July 11.
Not sure that it means anything, just for a heads up.
A verdict was reached Thursday in the trial of Jose Padilla and two co-defendants charged with supporting al-Qaida and other violent Islamic extremist groups overseas.
The jury verdict was scheduled to be read at 2 p.m. EDT before U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke in Miami’s downtown federal courthouse, according to an announcement from her chambers. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for about a day and a half following a three-month trial.
Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi face possible life in prison if convicted of all three charges in the case.

NORWOOD - Two unidentified men were reportedly seen taking photos of the facilities at Norwood Memorial Airport during the past week, prompting security concerns among police and airport officials.
A woman reported the suspicious activity to police Tuesday, claiming to have seen two dark-skinned males walking south on Access Road near airport property about 7:30 the previous night, according to police records. The men were seen a short time later sitting on a bench in an observation area that overlooks the airport, according to records.
The woman further stated that she believed the two men were the same people a friend of hers saw last week taking pictures of the airports main building, police said. Obviously were going to keep an eye out, said police spokesman Paul Bishop, adding that officers routinely patrol near the airport. They have pretty tight security down there. Assistant Airport Manager Mark Raymond declined to comment yesterday other than to say that the matter is still under investigation.
A police report indicates that airport officials knew the two men were seen in the area, but not that they were seen taking pictures. We have had those (reports) in the past, Bishop said. Its not new, its not unique. It could be something as simple as real estate people taking pictures. In todays atmosphere of terrorism, you have to be more careful.
