In an interview published in today's New York Times Sunday Magazine, Kristin Gore, daughter of former Vice President Al Gore, claims the Gores were 'under siege' by 'bussed in' protesters outside the Vice President's residence in Washington, D.C. during the 2000 presidential election Florida recount as Gore fought to win the presidency from then Texas Governor George W. Bush.
Gore says the protesters' cries of "Get Out of Cheney's House" (a reference to Bush's vice presidential nominee, Dick Cheney, who would take residence there upon being inaugurated) drove her mother, Tipper, to play nature sounds on a CD player to distract the family from the sounds of the protesters.
Contrary to the claim by Kristin Gore that the protesters were bussed in, they came of their own volition and either drove or took public transportation there. The protests were initiated, organized and led by the D.C. Chapter of Free Republic.
Below is an excerpt from the Times interview with Gore:
Have you met President Bush and Laura?
No, I never met them during the 2000 campaign, and since then, the invitations have been lost in the mail, Im afraid.
How often do you think back to the 2000 election and the legal fight over the counting of the ballots?
As little as possible. If I ever do dip into that, it doesnt go anywhere good.
Were you living with your parents during that period?
Yes. I took a leave of absence from Futurama, and I was home for the 36 days because I felt pretty useless as a comedy writer. They bussed in people who stood outside screaming, Get out of Cheneys house.
This was outside the official vice presidents residence, where your family lived for eight years?
Yes, it wasnt really a great atmosphere, but my mom maintained a sense of humor about it. She was making jokes about Noriega and turning up the stereo to drown out the chants.
I trust she wasnt playing rap music, in light of her crusade against profane lyrics. She would play all kinds of music and those nature sound CDs, which were supposed to fool us into thinking we were in the rain forest instead of in a house under siege.
I am so proud of you guys who were there at the “Vice President’s” house... (not “Al Gore’s” house) trying to make sure that a Free Election results came to fruition.
Al Gore just was not getting it at that time, that the last recount had been done, and he had to get off the government payroll and out of Government housing.
THe first three sentences of your post #50 conjured up the phrase “Al’s Heimers”/ Wanna work on a manuscript called “A Convenient Lie” (How to display your ongoing mental illness in public and turn it into PURE POLITICAL GOLD!!”
-—You know , one of those “self-help” therapy-type books.
"A Country will suffer as much as evil is sufferable, and when it becomes unsufferable the people will rise up and change it"
The people of Venezuela should take note !
Poor, poor Kristin. It’s very uncomfortable when the shoe’s on the other foot, isn’t it, dear?
Freepers should consider it a badge of honor to be labeled by the left who only know how “they” would do it, so they understandably paste the bussed in BS where it doesn’t belong. I long to say more, but my Momma always said, “If you can’t say anything nice”.
Gee, thanks for reminding me Kristin of those good times. I’m proud to have been a bur under your little saddle. And for the record, I wasn’t bussed in. I drove.
In Bill Sammon’s excellent book about the 2000 election, he reports that Gore was freaked out about the cries of “Get out of Cheney’s house” and several times personally called ALF-CIO president John Sweeney to try and get some union people out there to counter the protestors. Sweeney, by that time had become convinced that Gore should concede, so he told Al that it was impossible, because it was the holiday (Thanksgiving) weekend and he couldn’t get any peopel to come out to demonstrate..
Freepers were only a small part of the crowd, which was mostly local Republicans, I would say 90%. There were no bussed in protestors on our side. That's a Democrat signature move and as I recall it was reported that Al called on Union goons to counterprotest.
The chant "Get out of Cheney's house,"was actually originated by the local Republicans, as I remember. I thought it was sort of tasteless and missed the point, so I didn't join in on that and didn't notice other Freepers joining it. We had better chants from the brilliant and resourceful Doctor Raoul.
You da man!!!!
I made the same mistake initially -
no, that was KERRY’s daughter, showing her nipples at the film festival.
You do know that if they had had enough goonion folks there, they would have turned to physical intimidation,
like they did at the protests outside the White House during the Clinton years.
Dang....last time I saw a yap like that it had a hook in it !
Girl looks like she could eat corn on the cob thru a picket fence !
Police put us across a big sort of ravine from each other in the 2000 Florida West Palm protests outside the recount area. It was a giant crowd on the Bush side, maybe 1,000, maybe more, pitifully small on the Dem side, like I said van coming in and dropping them of, maybe 20. No chance for them to try physical intimidation, but I have no doubt they would have tried it if they could have achieved something positive from it. Cubans, cops, and ex-military guys would have handled that . . . the police were with us too, giving thumbs up and that sort of thing.
LOL! I think we all would join you in that activity.
“How dare you treat my dad like that; after all, he is the father of the internet.”
“Futurama” has always sucked. BIG TIME!
Oh yes, and don't forget, the movie "Love Story" was based on al and tipper..........lmao!
Yes -- They will turn to violence. One Freeper family was passing thru a group of them to get to a corner, and they either pushed or shoved the young son, who I believe fell down. When confronted, they had an excuse, of course, (liars) but these cowards had gone after a kid instead of picking on someone their own size.
Sorry, Seven... not everyone “gets” you.
