Homeschoolers Disrespected on Ebert & Roeper
Ebert & Roeper ^ | 6/18/07

Edited on 06/18/2007 1:15:58 PM PDT by Admin Moderator. [history]

I was just watching Ebert & Roeper and would like to report to my fellow homeschoolers that the guest host taking Roger Ebert's place tonight, Robert Wilonsky, made a very disrespectful and rude comment in relation to homeschoolers...

While reviewing the upcoming movie "Nancy Drew" Roeper made a comment that Nancy was a 1950's girl in relation to what she thought constituted a birthday party. When Roeper said that this would be a good movie that would be liked by 12-year-old girls, Wilonsky replied, "Maybe Homeschooled 12-year-olds"...

I found this to be a very ignorant and disrespectful comment, and I am left wondering what Mr. Wilonsky thinks would be better suited for 12-year-old Public Schooled/Private Schooled students to be watching (Sex, Drinking & Drugs???)?

I would like to ask my fellow homeschool parents to write to both Ebert & Roeper (Buena Vista Entertainment) as well as Mr. Wilonsky himself, and express your displeasure with this disrespectful comment.

Here is how to contact the show & Mr. Wilonsky...

Ebert & Roeper Show: http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/ebertandroeper/ Use the "Feedback" link at the top navigation bar to submit a comment.

Mr. Wilonsky: I could only find one email address online for Mr. Wilonsky (he also writes at RottenTomatoes.com, as well as the Village Voice, L.A. Weekly, and the Phoenix New Times). Here is his email address through his employer the Dallas Observer:

Robert.Wilonsky@dallasobserver.com

In my comment to the Ebert & Roeper show I requested not only that they do not bring Mr. Wilonsky back for any more co-hosting gigs, but also that they issue an on-air apology to all homeschooled students.

I think the whole”social development”argument for public schools is highly overated, way more than the liberal indoctrination argument against them.
I think my social development was actually HINDERED by me going to public schools.Whats so enobling about being bullied by a bunch of little thugs and being mocked and ridiculed by the girls because I had some kind of interests beyond the football team and”bitching”cars?
To this day I am misanthropic and people wary. The innocence of my childhood was shattered by the cold and callous ways of the peer group.

So you silence yourself because you think you should be “tolerant” ?

Yup, that’s one strategy that’s allowed this country to become such a cultural mess.

“I personally have had psychologists and doctors whom our family is friends with express to me that my children are more well-adjusted, and very matured socially in comparison to the other government-schooled children they’ve come in contact with.”

I’ve had the same comments. My kids are very well respected in our neighborhood, church, and the little town we live in. :-) We’ve only been here a year.
Our pastor sat down with a group of homeschool kids and talked to them for a long time. He said he never enjoyed talking to kids as much as he did these kids.

I will concede one child in the group is in public school.

“Missing social development”, you say?

I have been hearing that line for almost two decades now. At first I thought it was just people misinformed from last of exposure, then I thought it was probably peoples understandable preconceptions. Now I am starting to take it more and more as deliberate bigotry, hatred and insult. All my siblings were homeschooled, my wife was homeschooled, I am planning to homeschool. Scientific studies discredited the 'socialization' premise back when I was still in school. You might think years of well adjusted homeschoolers quietly slipping into the adult workforce without incident would make an impact. It has to be the pure socialism they are getting from public school and the media. Where else can this herd mentality be coming from? 'It takes a village' and all that junk. As I get older I have less tolerance for ignorant bigotry directed my way.

Are you that sensitive? A condescending look? Do you think my four homeschooled children (who I adopted from foster care, and have endured much more ridicule than what you describe) would be offended as such a comment? Do you think I, as a homeschool single mother, am offended?

Absolutely not. Doesn’t matter how he meant it. Just once again proves that my children are better off in the communities (homeschool, adoptive, church) in which they reside, and live, and thrive.

Those public school kids can go watch all the other movies all they want to. No problem with me...

I saw the previews of the movie and thought, “Finally something that I can take my girls to see.” If he said that, maybe I was right.

Hey, thank for doing the research for us. I probably could have guessed, but it is nice to know what posters I don't need to respond intelligently to.

How was your Prom?

*snort* Why do folks who want to denigrate homeschoolers always comment about 'the prom'? There are many of us who went to public school and never attended a prom, because our schools didn't have one, or maybe we just decided we didn't want to go through the hassle and expense. Actually, there are some large homeschooling groups that offer a prom experience to their kids, so that isn't a 'problem' anymore.

Our daughter was homeschooled from the 8th grade on, and she never lacked for social activities. In fact, she was active in Girl Scouts, our Parish youth group, and helped run the Anime Club at the local public high school. This past spring, her college had a Semi Formal for its students, and she and one of her roommates, and two young men friends decided to have a 'nerd prom' instead, and went out for a casual dinner. They had a great time.

She's actually a fairly shy person, and doesn't tolerate fools gladly. One of the reasons we decided to homeschool her was that she didn't have anything in common with the kids in her school; she wasn't into the middle school girl activities. She didn't care for sit-coms on TV, didn't like to the lastest musical groups, thus she had no knowledge or interest of pop culture. So she didn't have anything to talk about with the girls, and thought all the teen drama was silly. She was just as happy to be home, getting her education on her own. She even attended college her last year of high school, and didn't have a problem fitting in the the kids and adults there. Many folks choose to homeschool their kids for the same reason; maybe they don't fit in, and it's not because of some defect on the part of the homeschooling kids, maybe they just don't want to waste their time in the daily regimen of school and the teenage angst that accompanies it.

Don't presume to judge all homeschoolers by the limited number you've known.

Probably a “smart kids / stupid grownups” movie.
We let our kids watch cable at the grandparents’ house (not at our own). They frequenty come back smarting off and acting like they’re smarter than their parents... and pay the price!

My daughter is driving us crazy about this movie. There are only 2 movie theaters in our rural county, so the movie will probably be on DVD before it makes it to theaters around here. We’ve promised to take her to see it in a theater is one of “cities” 2 counties away when daddy gets back from a business trip he leaves for this afternoon.

She’ll be 9 next month and has been reading Nancy Drew books since she was 5 or 6..........oh, and she attends public school.

I enjoyed my public school education as well. Friends, sports, clubs, media production, class trips... I had a blast. I probably would have gone stir crazy if I was home schooled.

Granted I got out ('96) just before everything seemed to self-destruct. I don't remember having condom education, attempted global warming indoctrination, and certainly was never assaulted as some others here have insinuated that its a normal thing in public school. However, the whole "diversity" cult phenomenon was just beginning. The cover of my senior yearbook even had the word "diversity" spelled out in rainbow colored letters.

Exactly! So take it as a compliment!

I'm with you. I'm not offended at all. I actually appreciate the distinction. If Nancy is too clean for Mr. Wilonsky's 12 year old, maybe he can rent "13" for her!

I’m more inclined to let my kids see Nancy Drew now. Seriously. I would rather my kids see something ‘old-fashioned’ than current. My kids are exposed to enough of today’s raunchiness as it is. Geez, they were watching The Waltons and one of the commercials was disgusting. It was talking about how to tell your boyfriend where the ‘right spot’ is.

I thought kids were homeschooled for that very reason, to keep them out of the environment of the public school system. I didn’t see the episode you’re talking about, but is the general impression that Nancy Drew is stupid and so only homeschoolers would like the movie because they, by extension, are stupid? Or that it is non-violent?

If the latter, it goes without saying that most parents who homeschool would prefer their child see a non-violent, family friendly picture. Am I mistaken? I’m not defending this guy, like I said I didn’t see it. But wondering what the insult was?
