I was just watching Ebert & Roeper and would like to report to my fellow homeschoolers that the guest host taking Roger Ebert's place tonight, Robert Wilonsky, made a very disrespectful and rude comment in relation to homeschoolers...
While reviewing the upcoming movie "Nancy Drew" Roeper made a comment that Nancy was a 1950's girl in relation to what she thought constituted a birthday party. When Roeper said that this would be a good movie that would be liked by 12-year-old girls, Wilonsky replied, "Maybe Homeschooled 12-year-olds"...
I found this to be a very ignorant and disrespectful comment, and I am left wondering what Mr. Wilonsky thinks would be better suited for 12-year-old Public Schooled/Private Schooled students to be watching (Sex, Drinking & Drugs???)?
I would like to ask my fellow homeschool parents to write to both Ebert & Roeper (Buena Vista Entertainment) as well as Mr. Wilonsky himself, and express your displeasure with this disrespectful comment.

In my comment to the Ebert & Roeper show I requested not only that they do not bring Mr. Wilonsky back for any more co-hosting gigs, but also that they issue an on-air apology to all homeschooled students.
And all of that makes me wonder even more about why it’s such an issue...it’s a party for heaven sakes. It’s not like if you’re not in school you can’t have a fancy party...
I went to my prom...hate to think how many years ago that was, but even then I didn’t enjoy myself. It had already degenerated down to the point I think it puts too much pressure on most kids. And LOL...I went to a Catholic Private School. So much for Private schools being better.
My experience in school was a big part of why I choose to Homeschool. Peer pressure can be a deadly force for most teens, IMO.

Slight correction - “tolerance” is a word that has been redefined by socialists to mean that we must accept any sort of amoral/immoral behaviors, and celebrate and pay for the consequences thereof.
It used to mean “putting up with objectionable person/situation” - not accepting, not celebrating, just putting up with. Heck, even the MW dictionary has changed it to say “allowing” instead of just putting up with.
I think it is a compliment, actually. People get their boxers in a bunch over the slightest things these days! Save your wrath for local governments that want to infringe on home schooling. These kinds of petty crusades just validate the stereotypes.

My goal is also to present such an example. I’m working on it.
Yeah, too bad my daughters are gonna miss out on all the gangsta culture, pro-gay sentiment, and global-warming as religion hype. They will defintely be missing out!

I am actually proof of that. I was public schooled and hated, detested, despised, every derogatory term you can think of, being with my parents in public during my teenage years.
I have teenagers now, homeschooled, and we adore each other, seek out ways to spend time together. Completely different world.
Wilonsky is well known in Dallas media as a “sophisticated” journalist. Which means that he revels in filth and cultural decay.
The Dallas Observer is an “alternate lifestyles” type publication that has a couple of redeeming values, exposing the fraud that exists in Dallas City Hall politics.
Wilonsky is a lightweight. If he likes a movie then I very seldom even see it.
Mine’s homeschooled too, FL, and you’re talking nonsense, but you can pray for mine if you like. :)
Then do some research, ok? Homeschoolers generally have social lives, quite as enriched as their academic lives.
Really, what’s wrong with you? Letting your kids learn their social skills from their parents and getting along with each other? Heaven knows, before long you’ll actually be communicating.

Besides, considering the state of “social development” in public schools today, I wanted no part of it.
You should worry about all the kids in public school - they grow up and vote Democrat in increasing numbers.
Do you think a populace of dumbed-down sheeple is a good thing, as long as “some families” homeschool ?
You might want to buy that compound now and begin filling the bunker with supplies, because “they” will be coming for your money, your property, and your rights.
Why do you think the 2006 Congress went Democrat ? Because unthinking people ignorant of consequences never thought beyond voting out the incumbent corrupt politicians, and did not think about the likelihood of the incoming crop being as bad or worse.
Sorry, but you sound like the manager who surrounds himself with lesser intellects just to make the manager look like a genius. I, OTOH, prefer surrounding myself with the smartest people I can find so that we all prosper.
You really need to read a history of public schooling in this country in order to appreciate why it is important to defend homeschooling. By doing so you are defending liberty and individualism versus collectivism and big government.
Six years ago PA was considering making its homeschooling laws more family-friendly. We homeschoolers held a rally and went to the public hearing in Harrisburg.
About 2400 people were there with their kids of all ages - babies to teenagers. I can tell you, I have never seen an auditorium filled with that many kids who were using the “nothing happening” time so constructively - most were reading or writing - and all were well-dressed with none wearing baggy falling-down or butt-crack-exhibiting pants.
I was so proud of all those positive examples of the maturity that comes with positive parental attention and homeschooling.
I didn't realize our family was so dysfunctional. :(((
