Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new national poll of adults shows that a majority of people disagree that Catholic politicians who support abortion should be denied communion at church. The poll comes after comments from Pope Benedict XVI saying they should and that pro-abortion politicians automatically excommunicated themselves.
Reacting to those comments, Rasmussen Reports conducted a telephone poll with 1,000 American adults on May 16 and 17.
They asked respondents, "The Pope believes that Catholic politicians who support abortion rights should be denied communion. Do you agree or disagree?"
According to the survey, 53 percent said they disagreed, 23 percent agreed and 24 percent said they were unsure or refused to answer the question.
Earlier this month, the Catholic Church leader visited Brazil for a series of speeches and meetings. On his way there, reporters asked him about the vote in Mexico City to legalize abortion there.
He said the politicians in the overwhelmingly Catholic nation removed themselves from the church and receiving communion.
"Yes, this excommunication was not an arbitrary one but is allowed by canon (church) law which says that the killing of an innocent child is incompatible with receiving communion, which is receiving the body of Christ," he said.
Later, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi explained that "Since excommunication hasnt been declared by the Mexican bishops, the Pope has no intention himself of declaring it."
"Legislative action in favor of abortion is incompatible with participation in the Eucharist. Politicians exclude themselves from communion," he said.
This month, a group of 18 pro-abrotion members of Congress responded to the Pope with a letter they wrote saying that being personally opposed to abortion is good enough even if they vote for abortion in a public policy setting.

Veritas! Quid est veritas?
**Catholic politicians who can’t reconcile their political positions with the teachings of the Catholic Church need to either leave politics or leave the Church.**
Amen, I second that. Again and Again.

**18 Democrats need to repent, or ex-communicate themselves, otherwise they are hypocrits.**
More than that. I think I read somewhere that there are 70 some Catholics in Congress. Of course, Brownback is OK. Santorum was OK, until he was rejected by his state. (Sad for him.) Wouldn’t he make a great vice-presidential candidate?
Those lies are being used SPECIFICALLY TO GET the vote and support of the priest (and millions of others!) that you mentioned.
Especially if you help spread such lies.
It was all over the news at the time, and one of Clinton's aides issued a non-apology apology that basically said THEY thought it was AOK to receive in a Catholic church.
It was in Africa, the EEM customs may be different there.
Majority votes for Barabas to be freed. Film at 11.
I wouldn’t call parish priests “social justice zealots”. What they are is massively misinformed. Most are overworked and are influenced by the mainstream media and have access to magazines that push that agenda. Their level of comprehension of these issues and economics in particular is very poor. I find that they will listen to rational arguments and I also find that almost no parishioners take up this task.
So yes I agree with you what has happened is that they’ve accepted a pack of lies.
Actually, Dubya got a majority of Catholic voters in 2000 and 2004. The Catholic vote, once solidly Democrat, has been trending slowly in a Republican direction for several generations.
It really doesn’t matter what the people who participated in this particular poll said. Most likely a good portion of the adults were not even Catholic. Even if they were Catholic, they still aren’t in charge of the Church. The Pope is headed by Jesus Christ and his servant on Earth, Pope Benedict XVI. The politicians have a choice. They can either follow the rules of the Church, or they can not recieve Communion. I don’t know why they are whining about not being able to recieve Communion anyway. It’s obvious the Church isn’t very important to them if they can go against most of its teachings.
So pointing out how people can misunderstand is “spreading lies”?
No, it’s the heritage of the Kumbayah Church, handed down from the most self-important decade(the 60s)by the most self-important people(the baby boomers)ever.
.
I find it the same here. Helping the poor is the big issue for our priests/nuns/parish, “social justice”, etc. It overrides any other issue for them.
