Jesus’ burial site found - film claims

The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.

If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.

The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first time on Monday in New York.

Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archaeological discovery.

The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalem’s Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus’ brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus’ son - the filmmakers claim).

Decades of research

The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.

Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.

Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.

The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canada’s Vision and Israel’s Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.

According to the filmmakers, the film’s claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.

This could have been a 2000 year old hoax, perpetuated anti-Christians of the early 1st century. And where are the bodies that were in the coffins? No mention of them. Even after 2k years there should have been human remains..........

Was there no body that eventually was shed or is Jesus still walking around in his 2000 year old body?

Neither Jesus, God, nor the Holy Spirit need a body. Just as angels need no bodies. Only living beings need bodies.

Pinging you, cuz I wanted to pick your brain. I thought your work is with ancient DNA or is that some other FReeper? Has there been any kind of buzz about this? IOW, wondered if you know what kind of DNA samples they've gotten from this site or if there's a reliable source about it.

I do archaeology, and use DNA is some studies, but my research is in the western US.

Sorry, can't help in this case. Its all I can do to keep up with the fascinating discoveries coming from the Americas.

For some reason I thought they would talk about what was in the coffins.

AK-47s and a note that said "Thanks for the business, Yassar."

I was wondering about 2000 year old nuclear DNA, whether or not it's possible to get a reliable sample from something that old. (depending on conditions, of course)

With the new techniques, they have both mtDNA and nuclear DNA back to Neanderthal, with some specimens at something like 45,000 years.

Its important to have teeth to work with, as they preserve the DNA quite well!

Thanx for the info. I knew they were getting good mtDNA & the best samples came from teeth, but I didn't know they were finding the same with nuclear DNA.

I thought that there was no family tomb, so Joseph of Arimathea offered his family tomb for Jesus' burial.

This is what happens when you invite someone into your home to stay awhile.
Next thing you know the whole family's moved in.

I read that a plane had crashed into that graveyard, killing all on board.

So far they've recovered 3,476 bodies!

No C vs E stuff, just a curious mind.

I like the Southwest - Utah/Colo area. Being from Indiana, I don't get to spend much time out there.

Yesterday I was reading about the Hopi - Navajo mess over the Black Mesa coal area, trying to figure out just who is the bad guy in this argument.

It seems that it just depends on which side you listen to.

Do you have any info?

Tnx, LC

Not for that particular squabble.

(But inter-group squabbling seems to be pretty much the norm for the areas I work in as well.)

Short answer is yes. It was a form of Joshua.

http://www.hadavar.net/nameofjesus.html

The name Jesus is an anglicized form of the Latin Iesus, which itself is derived from the Greek name Iesous. Iesous was the Greek transliteration of the Aramaic name Yeshua, which itself was the later Aramaic form of the Hebrew name Yehoshua.[1]

You may be thinking of the carbon-dating, which indicated a Mediaeval provenance. However the dating was done on a piece of the Shroud used as a "gripping point" during public viewing. For centuries the Shroud was displayed to the public, and held lengthwise by a dozen prelates at least once a year - and their hands weren't all that clean. Its easy to see how this could throw out the C14 dating. (Also, of course the entire Shroud was suffused in woodsmoke during a fire in 1532, further corrupting C14 data).

It has been shown that the C14 sample site adjacent to the Raes Sample site were both taken from an area that had been patched in the 16th Century by a technique called French Invisible Reweaving. This technique literally connects new thread to old thread and reweaves the cloth in situ.

The sample left over from the 1988 C14 test has been examined closely and has been found to contain approximately 45% new material that has been fullered by a medieval technique, retted in a distinctly different manner than the main body, dyed with madder root to match the aged linen of the main body of the Shroud, spun with a "Z" twist opposite to the "S" twisted threads found on the Shroud and the Linen contains inter-spun fibers of cotton which is not found on threads from the rest of the Shroud. Finally, the threads of the patch contain high levels of Vanillin which is entirely absent from the Linen of the rest of the Shroud.

Since the sample was flawed, the test was flawed.
