CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez, an outspoken opponent of the United States who has used Venezuela's oil wealth to give handouts to the poor, won re-election to another six-year term by a wide margin on Sunday, official results showed.

With 78 percent of voting stations reporting, Chavez had 61 percent to 38 percent for challenger Manuel Rosales, said Tibisay Lucena, head of the country's elections council. Chavez had nearly 6 million votes versus 3.7 million for Rosales, according to the partial tally.

Turnout was 62 percent, according to an official bulletin of results, making Chavez's lead insurmountable.

We're gonna be pulling an Operation Just Cause II once this all goes to crap and we finally start hearing about Chavez's death squads....

He can have a cell next to Noriega.

Dictators always win by wide margins, don't ya know. And if they don't, they make sure the opposition disappears.

Latin America's "leftist" political turning only creates all sorts of future problems for both Latin America and for the U.S. Political correctness has only helped in making the whole world "politically blind".

It's funny how easy it is to win re-election when your supporters run all the polls, control the voter rolls, you've replaced all of the judges with your cronies, and you threaten and intimidate your supporters with the police, which you also control.

It's amazing how well totalitarian dictators fare in elections.

He is a populist, poor people love him and they are in majority. If you want to keep populists away from power you need a Latin American style right wing dictatorship.

That popcorn-like sound you hear is all the champagne corks popping over at the DNC and at Jimmuh's house.

Gee, who saw that coming.

One of the things helping Chavez is that their voting process leaves a paper trail that government agents can follow. They can easily find out who voted against Chavez and take appropriate measures against them. If you don't vote for Chavez, you don't eat.

Saddam Hussein won his last election with 100% of the vote.

I guess Chavez is a popular as Saddam.

Come to think of it, his policies are more than a bit congruent to Saddam's.

Something about tyrannical totalitarian despots.

At least Kim Jong Il doesn't even pretend to have elections.

I submit that makes him more sincere than Chavez.

VENEZUELA IS SCREWED FOR A LIFETIME NOW!

Just you wait until the UN writes them a scathing note. That will show Hugo who is who. Unless one perhaps advocates that the US go in and use our military might to install a friendly despot, or liberate Venezuela. There is just so much injustice in the world. Where should we start? Venezuela or Mexico? You know, Columbia and Uruguay have some problems as well.

Officials hinted that the election results would not be secret; Chavez himself noted publicly that any government worker who voted for his opponent ("George Bush's devil puppet") would lose their job.

There was a poll in Venezuela (which had Chavez winning by a wide margin, so it wasn't exactly something that could be easily construed as an "anti-Chavez" poll) that had something like 70% of people assuming that there would be punishment for anyone who voted against Chavez...

Didn't Saddam win 100% to 0?

I remember seeing a cartoon that mentioned his opponent's name was "Oru Dye."
