Report from The Compost ........... almost as bad as The Slimes.

The Washington Post is bad, but NOTHING is as bad as the New York Times. Have you read their editorials over the past couple of years? The paper has become downright shrill and sophomoric in its bitterness. It's embarrassing.

My, how the mighty have fallen.

Oh my. Is this the same CIA that complained it had zero human intelligence on the ground in both Afghanistan and Iraq? Those folks scare me.

CNN 1999...

"Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has offered asylum to bin Laden"
http://edition.cnn.com/WORLD/meast/9902/13/afghan.binladen/

AND.............

ABC 1999....

1999 ABC News Report : The Osama - Hussein Connection
http://www.radioamerica.org/audio/MR_ABC-Osama-Hussein-connections.mp3

ABC News, January 14, 1999

'". . . [Mamdouh Mahmud] Salim, alleged to be a key military advisor and
believed to be privy to bin Laden's most secret projects, is also apprehended.
The US government alleges that he was under secret orders to procure enriched
uranium for the purpose of developing nuclear weapons.

These are allegations bin Laden does not now deny. "It would be a sin for
Muslims not to try to possess the weapons that would prevent the infidels from
inflicting harm on Muslims, but how we could use these weapons if we possessed
them is up to us.

With an American price on his head, there weren't many places bin Laden could
go, unless he teamed up with another international pariah, one also with an
interest in weapons of mass destruction. Osama believes in the 'enemy of my
enemy is my friend, and someone I should cooperate with.' That is certainly
the current case with Iraq. Saddam Hussein has a long history of harboring
terrorists: Carlos the Jackal, Abu Nida, Abu Abbas. The most notorious
terrorist of their era all found shelter and support at one time in Baghdad.

Intelligence sources say bin Laden's long relationship with the Iraqis began
as he helped Sudan's fundamentalist government in their efforts to acquire
weapons of mass destruction. Three weeks after the bombing, on August 31st,
bin Laden reaches out to his friends in Iraq and Sudan. Iraq's vice president
arrives in Khartoon to show his support for the Sudanese after the US attack.
ABC News has learned that during these meetings, senior Sudanese officials,
acting on behalf of bin Laden, asked if Saddam Hussein would grant him asylum.

Iraq was indeed interested. ABC News has learned that in December, an Iraqi
intelligence chief, named Farouk Hijazi, now Iraq's ambassador to Turkey, made
a secret trip to Afghanistan to meet with bin Laden. Three intelligence
agencies tell ABC News they cannot be certain what was discussed, but almost
certainly, they say, bin Laden has been told he would be welcome in Baghdad.''

And intelligent sources say that they can only speculate on the purpose of an
alliance. What could bin Laden offer Saddam Hussein? Only days after he meets
Iraqi officials, bin Laden tells ABC news that his network is wide and there
are people prepared to commit terror in his name who he does not even control.

'It's our job to incite and to instigate. By the grace of God, we have done
that.'"

Iraq Tempts Bin Laden To Attack West

The Herald
By Ian Bruce
December 28, 1999

The world's most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, has been offered sanctuary in
Iraq if his worldwide terrorist network succeeds in carrying out a campaign of
high-profile attacks on the West over the next few weeks.

Intelligence sources say the Saudi dissident believed responsible for the
bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and a US military
barracks in Saudi Arabia in 1998, is running out of options for a safe haven.

He is now thought to have overcome his initial rejection of Saddam Hussein,
whom he regarded as an exploiter of the Islamic cause rather than a true
believer, and is considering the offer of a bolt-hole from which he can
continue to mastermind terrorism on a global scale.

A US counter-terrorist source said yesterday: "Our State Department issued a
worldwide warning on December 11. We have solid information that many of the
groups operating under bin Laden's patronage are planning 'spectaculars' to
coincide with the period leading up to and through the millennium
celebrations.

"They want to inflict maximum loss of life in return for publicity. Now we are
also facing the prospect of an unholy alliance between bin Laden and Saddam.
The implications are terrifying.

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

It looks like the 9/11 Commission got an important detail wrong. Shakir probably DID work the Iraqi Fedayeen and he had documents on him when arrested that linked him to the 1993 WTC bombing. And he drove the 9/11 hijackers to a planning meeting.

Your pal at work is just wrong; and he's programmed that way so there is no amount of definitive evidence that will persuade him.

He will just move the goalposts again.

The fact is, the Gulf War of 1991 could not end until the conditions for the cease fire had been met. 12 years into it practically nothing had been met.

One condition was that Iraq had to return the Kuwaiti prisoners it had abducted - civilian and military- in its invasion of Kuwait. It had abducted a little over 600 Kuwaitis, mainly members of influential Kuwaiti families. 12 years after the end of Desert Storm, Iraq still had not accounted for those people.

Iraq had to return US and coalition captives. Last I heard, Captain Speicher is still missing, and all we have is an ominous scratching of what appear to be his initials on a cell wall.

Saddam Hussein should be having his nuts cut off with a belt sander until he gives up what happened to Speicher; instead we have quislings worried about Saddam Hussein's rights.

Iraq had also taken other Americans captive after Desert Storm; one of those he sentenced to death during the last years of the Clinton admin. Bet your friend didn't know that.

Iraq had to discontinue its long-range missile program.

Instead the program was ramped up and we discovered this when we sighted a new missile engine test stand shortly before the recent renewal of open war. After getting in to take a close look, we found that not only had the missile program not been discontinued, it had progressed well beyond what our intel had originally estimated. Last time I checked long-range missiles are not designed to deliver valentine cards.

Iraq was to provide proof of the disposal of its weapons systems and programs. If they had been cooperative they would have proven their intentions by permitting inspectors to observe the destruction and participate in it. Instead, kept inspecotrs out and even bribed some. They claimed they had destroyed weapons and precursors but in some cases all they did was destroy a portion at a given site, just enough so that inspectors' testing of soil samples and observation of shell fragments would indicate some destruction took place- the problem was, this did not meet the verification requirements of the cease fire as there was no way to confirm that ALL the stores of materials had been disposed of.

Iraq was required to account for captured Iranian soldiers from the Iran-Iraq war. As we all remember, these men were not accounted for- their bodies were simply stockpiled so as to vindictively leave their relatives back home in limbo about the fate of their relatives.

Iraq was supposed to end procurement of prohibited items- instead Iraq smuggled in prohibited materials- even up to the eve of war in 2003. Those aluminum tubes they smuggled in were forbidden no matter what their intended use, for example. The libs try to discount them by clasiming they were just for rockets. That's immaterial, since it is the tubes themselves that are prohibited. As it happens, it was a shipment of similar tubes that exposed the Libyan nuclear centrifuge program.

If your friend cannot prove that Iraq had abided by the terms of the cease fire- and we know that he cannot - your friend has no case.

Iraq's support of terrorism is undeniable, even to the point of sending in assassins to kill Iraqi expatriates abroad, including within the United States. Iraq's failure to turn over wanted terrorists is undeniable. Not only did the terrorists find safe haven in Iraq, they were given pensions and training.

Terrorists were assisted by Iraqi diplomats in murdering Americans before and even AFTER 9/11. Zarqawi's group was in Iraq prior to 9/11 busily assassinating Kurdish leaders, and his group received funding and weapons from the Iraqi government.

Iraq had inserted spies into Europe who were targetting US military HQ, and had plotted to bomb the US-sponsored Radio Free Iraq facilities. Iraq had sponsored assassination attempts against US officials, and hosted terrorist groups which were known to have even tried to assassinate US officials inside the US.

But none of this will persuade the naysayers because they are emotion-based herd creatures and their media shepherds have bottle fed them from birth, cared for them and cuddled them and watched over them all their lives, and told them the lies about utopian green pastures waiting just out of reach so often they just can't believe there are wolves out there and not the promised green pastures. When the sheepdog tells them they are destined to go on a media-sponsored slaughterhouse in the fall, they will only blink stupidly, accuse the sheepdog of spying on them, and respond with the next programmed line from the shepherd.

...and yet, Al Qaeda-in-Iraq leader Abu al-Zarqawi was in Iraq from December 2002 until we killed him in June of 2006...

That little detail must be too trivial for the ComPost to bother highlighting.

Probably because in Saddam's day, AMZ was not the big player that he was in 2006 when he got woken up by the 500lb JDAM alarm clock. In fact, AMZ was more of a freelancer at the time, working on his own projects, not for AQ senior leadership. He was trained in the Afghan camps years before, but had gone his own way long since. It wasn't until well into the insurgency that AMZ swore alleigence to UBL and put his group under the AQ wing.

So, the Saddam/AMZ link is pretty flimsy. Even if Saddam was tight with AMZ, which it's doubtful, AMZ wasn't tight with AQSL. Even when they were working together during the insurgency, we know from Ayman al-Zawahiri's intercepted letters that the Z man didn't approve of AMZ's extreme methods at all.

The links, as we know them, might work in the Kevin Bacon game, but it falls far short of being a 'smoking gun', for intelligence purposes.

A cursory examination of Zarqawi's cell in Iraq reveals that many of his top operatives were once Saddam's military and intelligence officers.

Invading Iraq and disbanding their military may have been a factor there. I don't know about you, but if the Soviets had invaded, and the only one that was resisting him locally was a religious/militant David Khoresh type, I'd drink the kool aid, get a gun, and praise Jesus until we had kicked them back to Moscow. Politics make strange bedfellows.

It just sticks in my craw every time I hear them say it’s an intelligence failure. … This was a policy failure. … I think, over time, people will look back on this and see this is going to be one of the great, I think, policy mistakes of all time,” Drumheller tells Bradley.’

Arrogance on parade. And the man has a HUGE craw to stick it in too.

So, according to the information, Bin Laden had not ties with Saddam.

That doesn't necessarily mean that he had no ties with Iraq.
