Dear Fellow American,
I won't say it's inevitable -- nothing is. But if I were a gambling man, I wouldn't bet against it.
I'm speaking about a Democratic takeover of Congress in November -- considered almost a certainty in the House, and highly probable in the Senate.
Yet strangely, many conservatives seem resigned -- even indifferent -- to this looming disaster.
My name is Tom Winter, editor-in-chief of HUMAN EVENTS. I've been fighting for the conservative cause for over forty years. And frankly, I've never been so worried about the future of our movement -- and of our nation -- as I am today.
Don't get me wrong: I'm no robotic cheerleader for the GOP establishment. I've been a frequent critic of Republican leaders, including the President, and I understand the impulse to punish them for their missteps and their compromises of conservative principles, but I also know this:
For conservatives to stand idly by while liberals regain control of our government -- especially in the midst of a terror war -- would be a catastrophe from which America might never recover.
Just think: with Democrats back in charge of Congress, the bitterly partisan Harry Reid of Nevada would take over as Senate Majority Leader, while "San Francisco Socialist" Nancy Pelosi would become Speaker of the House. Both are committed to undoing the Bush tax cuts, and to restoring the Democratic model of tax-and-spend Big Government.
Then, "King of Pork" Robert C. Byrd (WV) would return as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, while activist liberal Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont would be back in charge of the Senate Judiciary Committee, promising to block every Bush judicial nominee who threatens any part of his beloved liberal agenda.
It gets worse: Teddy Kennedy would take over the Senate's Health, Education and Labor Committee -- promising to "end health care as we know it" in favor of universal HillaryCare. Joseph Biden, as the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would do everything he could to frustrate the President's prosecution of the War on Terror.
They could set us back decades
Worst of all, such a change would mean no more Supreme Court nominees like newly appointed Justices John Roberts and Sam Alito. Think of it: conservatives need only one more solid conservative to form a Supreme Court majority on such issues as abortion. But a Democratic victory in November would prevent that long-sought conservative goal from being realized -- possibly for decades.
We here at HUMAN EVENTS simply won't allow that to happen without a fight. But we need allies. We need smart, well-informed conservatives who appreciate what's at stake in this battle and can help us rally the conservative faithful to defeat the liberal Democratic onslaught in November.
In other words, we need you.

I'm getting tons of reports from readers and bloggers who are receiving stock e-mail replies and blog comments posted by Miller Media Relations denying that they sponsored the Chicago illegal alien march this weekend and claiming that the company supports the full enforcement of immigration laws. I also received the boilerplate CYA statement. Here it is:

Having learned from previous p.r. bungles, organizers once again made sure American flags were in abundance. It seems, however, that the amnesty activists who drape themselves in red, white, and blue remain woefully unfamiliar with basic flag do's and dont's. I offer some friendly advice (photos via YahooNews! and AZCentral.com)
DO: Keep the flag off the ground.
DON'T: Use the flag as a lap blanket
DON'T: Use the flag as an umbrella
DON'T: Tie it around a toddler's head.
DON'T: Display it upside down, unless you are intending to send a distress signal--in which case, it is entirely appropriate.
WARNING!!! The open-borders crowd is planning yet another march on Thursday at 4 p.m in Washington, from the National Mall to the U.S. Capitol. Let's see if they can do right by the American flag this time.
I still say.. go to conference, and if the conferees emerge with the HOUSE bill, the Republicans have demonstrated leadership.. if not they have unfortunately demonstrated an INABILITY to lead... IMHO
My analysis differs slightly.. I believe that the garbage put in the Senate bill, was needed to get a bill passed.. nothing says that the HOUSE must cave in to the Senate in conference, and I honestly believe that if we make enough noise the HOUSE bill can emerge from conference and the President WILL sign it... the only way we will know is to let the bill go to conference and see what comes out......
Forgive my ignorance but I've been a Freeper for a few years now and I don't know what "bttt" stands for.
I believe that MANY senators voted for the Senate Bill just to get it to conference..
