The Conservative Case for Rudy Giuliani in 2008
John Hawkins of Right Wing News makes the conservative case against Rudy Giuliani for 2008. Hawkins piece largely consists of the same old anti-Rudy arguments wrapped in slightly new packaging, focusing a lot on Rudys decade-old socially liberal positions on a few cultural issues, as well as his Manhattanite personal life and some nonsense about unelectability (more on that later). As such, I think this is a great opportunity for someone to lay out the conservative case for Rudy in 08. And that someone might as well be me.
Giuliani: Pro-growth tax-cutter
Rudy Giuliani has proven, both during his tenure as mayor of New York and through his subsequent rhetoric, that he is a pro-growth Republican in the mold of Ronald Reagan, Jack Kemp, and Newt Gingrich. As mayor, Giuliani cut city taxes by more than eight billion dollars, reducing the tax burden on New Yorkers by 22%. Giulianis low-tax views remain intact. As Race42008 correspondent Kavon noted yesterday, Rudys recent visit to Minnesota included an emphasis on achieving economic growth via low taxes and less regulation on the economy. Rockefeller he aint; Rudys a Reagan Republican.
Rudy: Gingrich-style government reformer
Conservatives who liked Newts welfare reform and GWBs attempt at entitlement reform have an ally in Rudy. As mayor, Giuliani reformed welfare in New York with the same tenacity as the class of 94 in Congress. Once again, this aint Christie Whitman were dealing with; Rudys a Newt Republican who also made a serious attempt to take on the teachers unions in NYC and fund school choice via charter schools. A President Giuliani means a conservative reformer who will fight for market-based revisions to our age-old bureaucratic messes in Washington.

Exactly.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Since most politicians change their views over time and especially when they are thinking of running for the Presidential office, I am curious where he stands on the issues today. Everything I read that is negative, stems from the past.
All said and done, this guy is one hell of a leader.
COLMES: Now, Roe vs. Wade -- You are pro-choice. How important is it to you as a pro-choice Republican to have a pro-choice on the court as someone...
GIULIANI: That is not the critical factor. And what's important to me is to have a very intelligent, very honest, very good lawyer on the court. And he fits that category, in the same way Justice Ginsburg fit that category.

In 1999, Giuliani was asked his views on abortion. He said, "I'm pro-choice. I'm pro-gay rights." When asked about banning Partial Birth Abortion, the then-Senate candidate replied, "No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing."

Yeah. Conservatives don't vote for liberals.
Giuliani's liberal northeast politics will not play well with conservative Republicans in flyover country. Voters in the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary will not vote for Rudy. Giulinai`s liberalism will not play well with religious and social conservatives. Rudy is pro-abortion, pro-partial birth abortion, pro-gun control Republican who supports special rights for homos and illegal aliens. Giuliani also left behind a $2-billion deficit and a $42-billion debt after ending his reign as mayor of NYCity.
No thanks.
You're right. On most social issues Rudy is to the left of Hilliary. He's no conservative.
Rudy with a strong conservative running mate would be a good choice, or maybe with Tommy Franks for the GWOT "gravitas."
I notice your linked website has McCain listed as "first." BAH!
"the way Justice ginsberg fits on the court"?
TDB, I personally like Rudy, but this and his 2nd Mandment stance makes his candidacy a non starter.
I think 9-11 made Rudy grow up a bit, yes.
And I agree: no McCain!
And who would that be ? The right wing moonbats do not ANY CANDIDATES other than themselves who satisfy every litmus test issue. Tancredo might be their guy, but he has zero chance. To the litmus test people, everyone fails their definition of purity and goodness.
Dude, camel's nose and the best way to keep it out of the tent.
I still remember Rudy moving in with a homosexual couple after his split with his wife while she went to appear in the "vagina monologues"
No thanks
(BTW anyone who would care to look into the subject might want to check out Regan's "Kitchen Cabinet")
If you take a close look at Race 4 2008, this site has about as much credibility as DU.
---"And I agree: no McCain!"---
LOL
No McCain, but Rudy is okay.
Are you a registered Democrat, or "Independent?"
I guess that leaves us morally deprived, socially inept morons, to carry your water for the only viable candidate that can beat Hitlary, hands down.. It's fun watching the single issue, suicide, sycophants, circle firing squad, target practice before every election.. Pity you can't muster up enough petition votes to draft a real Conservative like Pat Buchanan, or Alan Keyes to carry your banner.. :)
Dude,
I'll settle for 25% purity.
Rudy still fails the test.
Hillary/Rudy
What was the difference, again? Not speculative differences, mind you -- real differences.
I like Bush.
And he won.
Pretty Conservative, too.
McCain's loyalty is to himself, and himself only.
He seems to cringe whenever he's asked to say anything bad about a Democrat, but has no problem trashing fellow Republicans.
Rudy's a fierce partisan who raises money for GOP candidates of all stripes and who explains why Republicans are BETTER than Dems on security.
Position papers will only take you so far. McCain found that out in 2000.
I can think of more reasons I don't want Rudi to be the nominee than I can think of reasons that I do. But a couple of things stand out about him. He is cool under fire. He believes in Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment: Speak no evil of a fellow Republican. Can we say that about McCain? As for his liberal social positions, while you are holding your nose in the voting booth, ask yourself if you would rather have Rudi or ANY Democrat?
He has/is spending plenty of time in the South so he can get enough southern votes to supplement the Northeastern and Rust Belt nomination votes that he is very likely to get. Throw in a few from the West and he is the nominee. The biggest danger is conservatives split from the Party and Shrillary is elected. God forbid.
