In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.
Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."
This news was posted on FR here and here.
It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.
What is your opinion?
Being as literalist as I can be, the statement is about "prophecy" and all statements found in the Bible are not in and of themselves "prophecy".
Oh, did I take the verses out of context (being serious)?
Aren't Bishop, Elder, Pastor and Shepherd translated interchangeably in the NT? There is not necessarily a Biblical distinction, although some denominations have imposed a governmental type hierarchy and called some of them higher offices than others.
Did God tell him to write every word that was written? Was the writer merely taking dictation?
I guess one question to ask would be whether she is interpreting scripture or relaying what the pastor/synod elders have already decided? I believe there is a big difference between the two. In a house where there is no father or an unchurched one, the mother would teach her children no differently than she would a Sunday school class. Probably. I think most people are hesitant to go out on their own and change doctrine. What do you think?
I guess the Lord will explain it to me someday, but for the life of me, I fail to see why a woman is any less worthy of leadership in a church than a man.
"Aren't Bishop, Elder, Pastor and Shepherd translated interchangeably in the NT?"
That's what I always thought as applicable to church structure in the Book of Timothy.
Here's another one for you ~ Jesus' words are directed to the Jews, not to you.
You find some of the Bible uninspired?
I don't know, do you?
Not sure what you're smoking, but save me some. How you got all that from what I said, I'll never know.
What about II Tim 3:16? Or do you discount it because its a letter?
You stirring up trouble again?
I really think you should keep Moslem thoughts concerning what Scriptures are out of these Christian debates.
Sorry, no current message for ya, ping. But will advise if status changes.
Eve partook as one who had been deceived.
Adam partook as one NOT deceived, but with full knowledge and understanding as to what had taken place with Eve.
