In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.
Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."
This news was posted on FR here and here.
It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.
What is your opinion?

Adam sinned purposefully and without being deceived - and he was there with her, according to the text. Tell me how this sinning in full knowledge that the Creator had specifically forbidden him to eat the fruit is better than what Eve did?
And, while you're explaining, it would be helpful if you could cover the saved through childbirth verse, too.
I'm not sure the Greek is properly translated "marital unfaithfulness." Every translation that is considered to be a literal or near-literal translation uses the word fornication or sexual immorality.
Gk porneia = fornication, or possibly a violation of Jewish marriage laws

Well, when they can figure out how men can have babies and nurse them, then I'll listen to your theory.
Sure, it's extra-Biblical, but it became the basis for religious freedom in the West. Maybe the Holy Spirit guided those folks to that solution.
True, both are metaphors.. Strange that many christians when presented with a metaphor.. like "its raining cats and dogs" will run to the window to see pets falling.. missing the metaphor..
I like what the nuns do. They teach kids, the administer to the sick and poor, and they run hospitals. But I'm also a fan of Catholic tradition that allows only male priests. I don't think it will ever change and I do not want it to. But as far as teaching sunday school, I think its perfectly fine.

Is there a distinction in church structure bet all the titles you've given in the book of timothy?

What Sunday School might be should be up to any autonomous congregation. "Sunday School" is an expression that might refer to something that is not violative of Scripture, or it may be unscriptural, depending on what is taking place in any particular church. Conducting teaching sessions on Sunday does not have to be referred to as "Sunday School."

She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
It was only after Adam ate that their eyes were opened. Since he was with her, he heard the conversation and the fact that the serpent misquoted God. It looks like he just watched the whole scenario and when Eve didn't fall over dead, or nothing happened outwardly that he could see, he ate also; like he was letting her be the guinea pig. Adam could have stepped in at any time and prevented it. That's why he is considered the responsible one for sin entering the world.
Scripture states that women are more easily deceived so therefore it was Adam's responsibility to protect her and he didn't.
I'd like to read some of the arguments.
My pastor did a sermon on this awhile back, and he had scripture to back up his belief that women should not teach men. He said men and women have equally important different roles in the church.
So long as the teacher, whether they are female or male, sticks to the BIBLE. That's the key.
But the bible says women aren't to Pastor a church or teach men...
She must read a different bible than the one I read...
It is presumed they were guided by the Holy Spirit.
On the other hand, NO ONE has ever said Paul simply sat there and took dictation directly from God.
I have no doubt at all that he got some of it wrong. In this case he misused instructions given to us in the OT for a purpose not intended at the time they were written.
In the instance you cite above, Adam was not deceived. He intentionally violated God's command.

The nuns at my Catholic school taught us Scripture and the Church's teachings. I don't see a problem with women spreading the word of God to anyone.
