Reuters Doctoring Photos from Beirut? [photo inside]

OK, now things are getting weird.

This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation. Notice the repeating patterns in the smoke; this is almost certainly caused by using the Photoshop “clone” tool to add more smoke to the image. (Hat tip: Mike.)

It’s so incredibly obvious, it reminds me of the faked CBS memos. Smoke simply does not contain repeating symmetrical patterns like this, and you can see the repetition in both plumes of smoke. There’s really no question about it.

Yes, that raises another point to pursue: were there ANY fires in this part of Beirut with such dark oily smoke at the time the photo was taken, or is ALL of the smoke overlaid from another photo (maybe of when Israel did bomb an oil storage depot, etc.)....... this thick black smoke is quite remarkable in appearance, not what we have seen in most war zone photos........ if we can find any other photos of this bombing site taken at approximately the same time we should have our answer.

Search the photo files of the first Gulf War. Remember, at Husseins orders, the oil fields were set on fire. You will see legitimate, black smoke fires.

LOL... Now my 10yo daughter just passed through, I asked her to look at the picture. She said after about 2 seconds looking at the pic, "That's fake Mom... I can do that in PSP! Smoke doesn't flow like that".

I really do hope that someone in the MSM (Maybe Reuter's competitors) will pick this up and run with it. I think I'll send an email and copy of the screen-shot I took earlier to our local media outlets up here.

I am *trying* to assess the claim of photomanipulation with skepticism, trying to convince myself that the possibility that those effects in the smoke *could* result from chance interactions (of light diffusion, lens refraction, and perhaps digital camera photoreceptor patterning) is worth intense scrutiny...

but, alas, I find I fail...

dont you need the actual, original photo in order to claim another one is fake?

actually, no - depending on the crudity of the fake, of course. high zoom analysis, contrast filtering, and some other automated analisis techniques can make things like repixellation in a digital image REALLY obvious.
