OK, now things are getting weird.
This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation. Notice the repeating patterns in the smoke; this is almost certainly caused by using the Photoshop “clone” tool to add more smoke to the image. (Hat tip: Mike.)
It’s so incredibly obvious, it reminds me of the faked CBS memos. Smoke simply does not contain repeating symmetrical patterns like this, and you can see the repetition in both plumes of smoke. There’s really no question about it.

That's right. I'm just saying he maybe have been photo-shopping from his own photo(s).
Though, as you can see, his photo in the NYT has phone/electric lines that aren't in the other photos.
So it's not the *exact* spot, like the phote Hadean turned up.
I'm just contributing what I know about JPEG compression to the thread. Artifacts around objects with high detail that seem to mirror the edges of the detail are common in JPEG photos if the compression is high. The pic of the city and the smoke is *clearly* doctored to hell and gone. As for the guy, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for but I haven't been playing close attention to that part of the thread.

WOW. He cloned the entire city at an offset with an alpha blend < 100% before adding the smoke. What an amateur.

The gif makes it easy to see how the building and smoke is simply copied in the background....
The pic on the left is older (July 26, 2006) implying the buildings you see in the Reuters photo never existed (and hence were artifically added)

In addition to all of the great remarks on this thread, it should be noted that the "fake smoke" is dark black. Dark black smoke is generally found with hydrocarbon fires. If you look at most legitimate photographs of explosions in the city of concrete, one would expect plumes of smoke the color of......yes....concrete.....light grey. That is what the posted legitimate photo showed. These Reuters hotdogs are too clever. What a bunch of putzes.
And by doing such and not following up, you get a nice hole in the lower part of the smoke.

This same photographer seems to almost specialize in smoke photos, if you Google his name.
For instance, he took a lot of photos of the Beiruit airport, when the IAF first bombed it, which probably gave him a lot of nice black smoke.
But I'm sure he has lots lying around to choose from.
