PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush, and the dogs, are vacationing at their Crawford, TX, ranch for the next couple of week. However, no president is ever truly on vacation. Today, through White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who is at the ranch, President Bush issued a statement saying he is pleased with the draft UN resolution regarding the war in the Middle East. Here is an excerpt from the widely circulated AP story:
Bush Happy With Draft U.N. Resolution
By NEDRA PICKLER, The Associated Press
Aug 5, 2006 12:11 PM (46 mins ago)CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush has signed off on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at ending fighting in the Mideast and is "happy with the progress being made," his spokesman said Saturday.
But the president knows there could be a long road before violence stops, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.
"I don't think he has any delusions about what lies ahead," said Snow, accompanying Bush on his vacation to his private ranch.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley arrived at the ranch Saturday to consult with Bush as the full Security Council began discussions on the agreement reached by France and the United States.
The draft calls for Hezbollah to stop all attacks and for Israel to stop "offensive military operations." But it would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.
Israel, backed by the U.S., has insisted it must have the right to respond if Hezbollah launches missiles against it.
In an important, but largely overlooked domestic story, Congress sent a major pension overhaul bill to President Bush yesterday for his signature. Here's an excerpt from the story on ABC News:
Congress Sends Major Pension Overhaul Legislation to President Bush
By JIM ABRAMSWASHINGTON Aug 4, 2006 (AP) Congress passed major pension legislation designed to assure American workers, including millions of baby boomers nearing the end of their working careers, that the pensions they have been promised will be there when they retire.
The Senate, in its last vote before adjourning for a four-week summer break, approved the 900-page bill that compels employers with defined-benefit pension plans to meet their funding obligations and seeks to prevent companies from terminating plans and shifting the financial burden to the taxpayer. The House passed the bill last week.
PRESIDENTIAL VACATION SCHEDULE: From the White House press gaggle by Tony Snow.
The President's day today: he got up early, received his national security briefing, recorded the radio address -- which is about border security and immigration. Then he went out and did some brush-cutting and trail-clearing, followed by a bike ride, and will be doing other vacation relaxation sort of things for the rest of the day.The week ahead has more of the same, through Wednesday. On Thursday, the President will participate in a tour of Fox Valley Metal-Tech, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he will make a statement on the economy. While in Wisconsin, the President will attend a 'Gard for Congress' reception in Oneida, before returning to Crawford for the rest of the vacation, such as it is.
On the 11th, he'll attend a Republican National Committee reception and barbecue at Broken Spoke Ranch in Crawford. Then he'll spend Saturday in Crawford and return to the White House at a time to be determined on Sunday, the 13th.
The president plans to return to his ranch near the end of the month for a few days. But that trip is scheduled to be interrupted with other travel away from Texas, including a visit to the Gulf Coast to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
Thanks. I'm a bit of a survivalist and always thought I was being hypocritical by not having a way out of the city in case of a disaster (they give us volcano kits at school, you do the math...) or the government gets on my nerves too much. This way, I can buy an SUV and be on my way to Montana in a moment's notice. It doesn't do much good to have a bug out bag and emergency rations if you can't bug out, huh?
I'm moving to Iowa at the end of the year (hence the need for a license). I figure with a little studying, I can learn to make my own fuel out of some of that good Iowa corn : )

Hello great to see you in real time sorry to hear about your friend. Will you be able to have some sort of contact or are they going where this will be difficult?
Yeah, you're probably right.
Tuesday evening, a friend is going to help me produce a "memory" CD to give to family members. We've all lived apart from each other, and I want something for the grandkids to hand down to the great-grandkids as well as nieces and nephews (and great-nieces and nephews). It's going to be a tough evening to get through.
The next couple of days will be spent searching through boxes of photos.
Lovely, lovely tribute today Wolfstar.
Thank you for your very wise words.
I guess because my mom was only in a nursing home for 11 mos, it seems to have happened so quickly. 3 weeks ago she seemed to be making a strong comeback, and they were going to cancel her hospice care. Then .. suddenly, she had a bladder infection and pneumonia, stopped eating and taking fluids and within a couple of weeks - it was over.
My worst tears are when I talk to my older sister. She just lost her husband in June.
But .. I'm not good at hiding my feelings and it won't bother me a bit if I cry or don't cry.
Yes, this is the first time. I've always lived in the city, close-in burbs, or college towns, all with good transit systems. Being the ex-hippie that I am, I always felt that good urban planning meant that you didn't need a car to meet your basic needs.
I have to admit, the past few years, I started wanting a car, but I think so much time had passed, I was getting kinda scared to do it. I really felt I wasn't cut out to drive.
A few months ago, my son finally got his license (he's 29) and we bought a car. I can't believe how great it is to just jump in the car and go.
I did have to go back to ordering groceries online. Males seem to hate going grocery shopping and my son won't go with or wait for me, so it's been easier to let the cute guy from Albertson's keep deliving the goods. Other than that, having a car has been nice. I feel corrupted by capitalism and Big Oil, but I'm learning to live with it.
At the wakes for both my mother two years ago, and my older brother last month, there was almost as much laughter as tears. It's a good thing there were no other grieving families at the funeral home on either night, cause we got kinda raucus. But that's the way our family deals with death. We miss them terribly, but we know that our loved ones are with the Lord, and in a better place, so that helps us deal with the loss, and we can remember the fun times we had with them.
Although it's not my place to advise you, I'd say let yourself grieve. Your mom deserves to have someone grieve at her passing -- at least that's how I look at such things. (Am always here if you need someone to talk to.)
You're welcome, dmd. I think seeing these photos is a soothing thing in the midst of so much turmoil these days.
Amen!
It's understandable to not recall it, because the other one with Card is the more famous shot. This one comes a moment or two later in the sequence of photos the media were all snapping at the time. You may never have seen a still of this moment before, just the taped clip, which isn't played very often on TV anyway.
Then I'm especially pleased to post this particular Dose today.
What a beautiful place for a barbecue! You look great.
Snugs, if I didn't know those shots were taken in southeast England, I have assumed they were taken somewhere in one of our eastern states. Looks so quintessentially American. :)
BTW, the cat is pretty. Thanks for thinking of me and pinging me to a post of her (or his?) photo.
Glad you enjoyed it, McGavin. :)
Did you see the photo I posted of our Managing Director's cat?
That is a GREAT photo, radiohead. I didn't see it while researching pics for this thread, so I'm delighted you posted it. It's perfect for what this thread is about. Thank you so much for posting it.
