A day in the life of President Bush (8/5/06): photos & news
WhiteHouse.gov & various news sources ^ | 8/5/06

Posted on 08/05/2006 2:18:44 PM PDT by Wolfstar

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush, and the dogs, are vacationing at their Crawford, TX, ranch for the next couple of week. However, no president is ever truly on vacation. Today, through White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, who is at the ranch, President Bush issued a statement saying he is pleased with the draft UN resolution regarding the war in the Middle East. Here is an excerpt from the widely circulated AP story:

Bush Happy With Draft U.N. Resolution
By NEDRA PICKLER, The Associated Press
Aug 5, 2006 12:11 PM (46 mins ago)

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush has signed off on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution aimed at ending fighting in the Mideast and is "happy with the progress being made," his spokesman said Saturday.

But the president knows there could be a long road before violence stops, White House press secretary Tony Snow said.

"I don't think he has any delusions about what lies ahead," said Snow, accompanying Bush on his vacation to his private ranch.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley arrived at the ranch Saturday to consult with Bush as the full Security Council began discussions on the agreement reached by France and the United States.

The draft calls for Hezbollah to stop all attacks and for Israel to stop "offensive military operations." But it would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.

Israel, backed by the U.S., has insisted it must have the right to respond if Hezbollah launches missiles against it.

In an important, but largely overlooked domestic story, Congress sent a major pension overhaul bill to President Bush yesterday for his signature. Here's an excerpt from the story on ABC News:

Congress Sends Major Pension Overhaul Legislation to President Bush
By JIM ABRAMS

WASHINGTON Aug 4, 2006 (AP)— Congress passed major pension legislation designed to assure American workers, including millions of baby boomers nearing the end of their working careers, that the pensions they have been promised will be there when they retire.

The Senate, in its last vote before adjourning for a four-week summer break, approved the 900-page bill that compels employers with defined-benefit pension plans to meet their funding obligations and seeks to prevent companies from terminating plans and shifting the financial burden to the taxpayer. The House passed the bill last week.

PRESIDENTIAL VACATION SCHEDULE: From the White House press gaggle by Tony Snow.

The President's day today: he got up early, received his national security briefing, recorded the radio address -- which is about border security and immigration. Then he went out and did some brush-cutting and trail-clearing, followed by a bike ride, and will be doing other vacation relaxation sort of things for the rest of the day.

The week ahead has more of the same, through Wednesday. On Thursday, the President will participate in a tour of Fox Valley Metal-Tech, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he will make a statement on the economy. While in Wisconsin, the President will attend a 'Gard for Congress' reception in Oneida, before returning to Crawford for the rest of the vacation, such as it is.

On the 11th, he'll attend a Republican National Committee reception and barbecue at Broken Spoke Ranch in Crawford. Then he'll spend Saturday in Crawford and return to the White House at a time to be determined on Sunday, the 13th.

The president plans to return to his ranch near the end of the month for a few days. But that trip is scheduled to be interrupted with other travel away from Texas, including a visit to the Gulf Coast to mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

What a photo. I am not sure I have seen this one before--it certainly isn't as well known as the one where Andy Card is whispering in his ear. It is difficult to look at this photo--so much of all of our lives were changed that day--and we really had no idea what was in store. I am so thankful for GWB's leadership.

Another radiohead shameless self-promotion:

At the grand old age of 53, I passed my driver's test today!

I always thought driving was something I'd never be able to do - and I did it! I had to wear the trifocals, but I did it!

Hi dmd. It's a remarkable photo. You're right. It's not as well known as the one with Card whispering, but you've almost surely seen this one too. Actually, you've probably seen the tape of those moments when Card goes in, whispers to GWB, and withdraws. Then GWB remains seated until the program with the children is completed before making a brief statement and walking out of the room with dignity.

But of course with the Left, GWB can never win. If he had leaped up and dashed out of the room, they'd have complained about that, too.

THE CEASE FIRE DEAL
By Mark Noonan at 01:15 PM
Looks like we're getting pretty much all we need to ensure that Israel has all the time necessary to destroy Hezbollah in southern Lebanon:

The resolution asks that Israel and Lebanon agree to a set of principles to achieve a long-term peace. One crucial element is an arms embargo that would block any entity except the Lebanese government from buying weapons.
That is presumably meant to block the sale of arms to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria, believed to be the militia's main suppliers.

Other principles spelled out in the resolution include the disarmament of Hezbollah; the creation of a buffer zone from the U.N.-demarcated border between Israel and Lebanon north to the Litani River; and the delineation of Lebanon's borders, especially in the disputed Chebaa Farms area.

First off, its something that will be done "in the next couple days", according to Ambassador Bolton. Not like we're demanding immediate action. Could be nearly a week before its even voted on in the full Security Council.

As for the deal, itself: Essentially, it is a call by the UN for Hezbollah to surrender - stack arms, leave the south, and stop being terrorists. I doubt they'll agree to it until they are in extremis; ie, in order to save their miserable hides, they might agree to the terms in a week or so. The key then will be how forcefully the United States insists upon Hezbollah disarmament.

All in all, an excellent diplomatic job by a superb Ambassador (and President).

CONSERVATIVE COMEBACKS TO LIBERAL LIES
By Matt Margolis at 06:51 AM

Whether you're a blogger or a political junkie, you've had to put up with plenty of lies and myths when you talk to a liberal. "Bush is stupid," "Abortion is safe," "Republicans are racist," "Democrats are the party of the little guy," "Gun control works," etc. etc. You've probably heard them all.

My friend and fellow blogger Gregg Jackson, co-host of Pundit Review Radio on Boston's Talk Station 680 AM has written a book that catalogs these liberals lies and presents all the facts to contradict their claims. Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies reads like a book, but is an encyclopedic resource of information that enables the reader to quickly and efficiently rebut any liberal lie and respond with facts. Gregg Jackson has done all the research and organized the information into nearly 400 pages packed with rebuttals, facts, and tables on everything from abortion, to economics to zealot terrorism.

Conservative Comebacks is a valuable resource for anyone who is tired of putting up with the the lies and myths of the left. Check it out and order a copy.

PRESIDENT BUSH'S RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDERREPORTED
By Paul M. Weyrich
CNSNews.com Commentary
August 03, 2006

Some media, especially talk radio, is sympathetic to conservatives. However, much important news is unreported. For example, President George W. Bush during the month of July did many things which pleased social conservatives.

You're welcome, Deb. Re the article you linked entitled, "PRESIDENT BUSH'S RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDERREPORTED," the media actually tells us very, very little about his accomplishments. Not just recent, but any.

I'm doing okay .. the reality hits as I plan my mom's memorial. We were picking out a cake today for the reception following the service and my neighbor and I were blubbering all over the place.

Oh well .. maybe if I let it all out now I'll be in better shape on the day of the service.

GWB has great judgment and intuition. To sit there and finish up what he was doing made perfect sense. But you are right--it wouldn't have mattered what he had done that day, it wouldn't have been right in the eyes of his detractors. Thanks for sharing that picture (and I suspect that I have seen it before, but I don't recall it).

Another pic of the African children. I had this photo on my computer at school for months. I love all those little hands welcoming him.

Thank you so much for today's dose.

I've been eally sad today - I'm losing a friend who is being transferred out of the area, and I'm going to miss so much, it hurts already. And soon, he will be transferred overseas for a year and that will hurt even more. Sigh.

But this Dose is so special. I love the Tee Ball games so much. I never got to see one on the South Lawn while I lived in No. VA but I cam imagine them in great detail through all the pictures we've seen.

I love this President and First Lady. They truly love children. ALL children. God bless them both - and bless them with many Grandchildren to hug and cuddle.

Is this the first time you ever had a license? Congrats to you for having the gumption to do this. It can be awful intimidating to anyone older than teenage years, most of whom seem to be oblivious to the concerns.

We have one more to go through the driving learning process. Today is the first day he could have gotten his license, because he's had his permit for 6 months now, but we just haven't taken him out practicing. We want him to have some time behind the wheel before we let him drive with the driving school folks. He'll be much more comfortable that way. He also hasn't been pushing for it, so we just let it slip. We're fixing to move from MA, though, and I want him to have his license before we do. It will make the process of getting a license in MS much easier than moving with only a Permit.
