WASHINGTON -- Quietly leaving his post as surgeon general, Dr. Richard Carmona said he would judge himself successful if he had persuaded one student to make good health choices or one mother to stop smoking.
Carmona's report condemning secondhand smoke was a hallmark of his tenure as the nation's 17th surgeon general.

I AM staying on point.
The thrust of this post is that some people are glad that a SG that would aid political correctness, to the detriment of science, is stepping down.
He came out and said that ETS was deadly with no majority, much less a preponderance, of science to back it up.
It was the politically correct thing to do but it wasn't the correct thing to do.
The secondary thrust of this post is ETS, not first hand smoke.
Try to stay on point.

Huh? Protects? Absurd.Go read the study then come back and tell me what it says.
This is similar to the WHO study that found that seconhand smoke either had no effect or had a protective effect
I've already read the study and that IS what it says.

You have challenged me on several posts. Not one them mentioned the initial article.
I have been arguing that cigarette smoke is bad. Period.
That is my point. Now you are deflecting.
I don't care about the SG. I know that pro-smokers have a right to kill themselves with cigarettes. The fact that many insist it's their right to do so ignoring the concomitant idea that those around them are also harmed is the epitome of self-centeredness

Really? I'm sorry you've been so isolated. My sister flopped for months on a hospital bed in pain, eventually having holes drilled into her spinal column because with her IV drip the morphine just wasn't reaching her brain fast enough. I was a career soldier and I've seen horrible things in combat, but I have not seen anything more horrible than those final stages of lung cancer.Me? Isolated? LOL! You sure don't ME very well, do you!
You want to talk military career? My hubby was a Viet Nam Vet with two Purple Hearts. We traveled all over. Spent 5 years in Germany. He ended his 26 year career up here at Loring Air Force Base as the 1st Sgt of Transportation.
I have never been isolated in my entire life. And the only ugly anti's I have ever run into is right here in FRee Republic. People tolerate each other in MY real life. Smoke or not, friends hang together no matter what.

Health care costs have also risen as the number of pirates worldwide has declined. I think you'd have a more credible case arguing that the lack of pirates has increased costs. The costs of treating a person with a smoking related malady are known, high and increasing. You are not even taking into consideration the thousands of uninsured Illegals living in the states that WE have to pay for! You can't blame the total ills of the world on smokers.

So you haven't been on point from the very beginning.
I have not challenged your point that first hand smoking is not good for a person. Not once.
MY point is that the SG did something he shouldn't have and that the antismoker organizations will lie, cheat, and steal to drive their pitiful agenda home and ban smoking everywhere for no other reason than they don't like the smell of tobacco smoke.

I don't care about others? Heh! I love people and my friends and family. My gratification comes from them and my friends in Free Republic. My disdain comes from people like YOU.

Have you been reading Dr. Siegal's blog? Here is a man who has been a mover and shaker of the tobacco control movement for over 20 years and even he has now realized that most of these organizations are more interested in headlines than health.
IN MY VIEW: Extremism Has Taken Over the Tobacco Control Movement
Unlike Stan Glantz, Dr. Siegal is actually an M.D., not just a mechanic with a PhD.

You do? You mean you have no insurance, other than several million dollars you've put aside to fully self-insure? Because that's... unusual.I have TriCare Prime. Not that it's any of your business. It's from the military. Have you ever heard of it?!

I don't agree with the anti-smoking nazis. I just want to be able to work smoke-free. Even though we are a non-smoking place people are allowed to smoke all around.
When a smoker comes near me I politely ask that they take their cigarette somewhere else. The usual response is to either blow smoke in my face or challenge me.
Why is it that smokers are allowed to do things like this and non-smokers are vilified by a simple request.

You're pushing your luck buddy.
You don't like smoking - fine. Supporting government edicts to ban it on private property based on lies - not fine.
I don't give a hoot why this SG is gone, I'm just glad he is, because the lies he espoused last week are going take a major effort to clean up.
