Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has frequently said he won't run for president in 2008, but he's never ruled out being on the ticket as someone's running mate.
And he didn't Monday when asked about teaming up with Arizona Sen. John McCain as Republicans hope to come up with a ticket to keep the White House - now occupied by Bush's older brother, President George W. Bush.
"I like Sen. McCain. I think he's a good guy," Bush told reporters after returning from a holiday in Maine with his family.
Any potential GOP nominee would covet the 27 electoral votes in Florida where Bush enjoys a high job approval rating among voters as he nears the end of his second term.
It was the 25 electoral votes Florida held in 2000 that sent the current president into office - by a scant 537-vote margin of more than 6 million cast in the state.
Bush, 53, would also provide some age balance on such a ticket. McCain turns 70 next month.
When prodded about the likelihood of a McCain-Bush ticket, Bush hedged just slightly.
"There's all sorts of time to worry about the 2008 election," he said.
Bush is prohibited from seeking a third consecutive term as governor by Florida law.
Jeb Bush suffers from an obvious difficulty: American dislike of dynasties. Possibly there is some way to get around this problem, because he would be a great president. W. was better than his father, and Jeb would be better than W. But yoking him with McCain would permanently wreck any slim chance of a presidential future he might have. It's a terrible idea, any way you look at it.
The Kennedys tried. The Bushs have had 2 presidents. The Clintons hope for a 2nd.
Enough with the family dynasties.
There are over 200 million adults in this nation. Surely we can find some other capable people.
No...McCain...ever.
Captain Queeg and Alfalfa.
This country needs McManiac like it needs another Dukakias. Get rid of him.
But McCain? He's the result of cross-pollination between Dean and Murtha.
It's all over when McCain gets the repub nod.
"He's crazy...loonier than the left!"
"I don't think that I want to give McCain the button...He likes fireworks!"
"Hope he runs a country better than he flies an airplane."
Etc. His loved media will turn on him like lions on Christians.
McCain?? I just can't see voting for him, sort of the 2nd coming of Ross Perot. Not really a firm liberal, but not a conservative. Just someone who is looking for attention.
Jeb? I would vote for him in the general election, but I think the Republican party is bigger than just a single family.
I think McCain CAN be nominated. Why? People just vote for familiar names: they are too lazy to study candidates and issues. They just vote for someone they've heard of and then pat themselves on the back for doing their civic duty.
Don't tell him that, I've heard he has quite a temper!
Did I miss something? Did they legalize LSD? These clowns are on one bad trip....
I wonder if Katherine Harris would agree with that statement?
And, for starters, McQueeg is SO hated, by the base, that there is NOW WAY for him to win the '08 presidential primary.
As for Jeb, the Bushes were raised to be polite; even if that means that they have to lie through their teeth, about the likes of McLame.
If McCain does what Bush's father did and raises taxes, probably. The resulting downturn would sweep the Dems in in 2012 on a "worst economy in 50 years" campaign, whether Bush or McCain was the nominee. In other words 1992 all over again. If Bush ran in 2012 or 2016, he would be forced to defend the tax increase in the GOP primaries and general election, or sound lame attacking the policy.
No he doesn't; he's almost as horrid as she is.
Had Jeb not been cheated out of his first election as Governor of Florida it is likely he (not W) would be enjoying his second term as President of these United States.
I was kidding... geez. you know aht I would love to see? Rice/Bush 08
