Don't bother responding.

I ain't interested.

You are obviously a smart fellow.

Personally, I don't want people calling me ignorant with impunity.

Not you, but others.

I might not be as ignorant as the next guy, but I can't spell to save my life.

I have to move on. More fun ahead for me in other domains,

You're right, of course, but they are still the difference between "all" or "almost all"..

Ishmael was, of course, a descendant of Abraham. The story is in the Bible.

This is what happens when mathematicians take a stab at anthropology.

Yes, but Ishmael is not the ancestor of the Bedouin Arabs of the Arabian Peninsula from which sprang Islam.

Oh, he's not?!! How about Esau?

BTW, even in Mohammad's time there were Bedouin who were Jewish. In one instance the Koran reports that Mohammad's little army destroyed a Jewish tribe.

The tradition of most families in Yemen and of many others throughout the Arabian peninsula's grazing lands is that before they were Moslems they were Jews.

But, back to the Bedouin, Mohammad was what is called a "True Arab" (from the Peninsula, spoke Arabic, ate with the right hand, belonged to a tribe), but he wasn't a Bedouin.

The Bedouin did not invent Islam. They did not own and operate caravans. They did not live in town.

Mohammad invented Islam. He owned and operated caravans (with his wife) and he lived in town.

A similar situation can be found among the descendants of the Bounty mutineers on Pitcairn Island.

But the Bedouins were his principal converts. They were pretty much unemployed by then because of the effect the Black Death had on both the Roman and Persian empires. They no longer could afford the Bedouin mercenaries. Muhammad used them to wipe out the Jewish kingdoms of the Arabian peninsula as well as various Christian societies after they rejected his religious overtures. Originally he had Friday prayers directed toward Jerusalem. The Jews of the Arabia told him basically to pound sand. His response was to wipe them out and take over the cities they and the Christians had built over the preceding 6 centuries or so. The same rationale ensued over the centuries. Christian Egypt was salivated over for all the plunder and houses it had. Muslim scouts sent back lists of desirable places they were planning on acquiring after the invasion.

The Plague of Justinian was, presumably, boubonic (black death), but by the time Mo came around the Dark Ages were in full swing.

The Arab/Moslem empire was built by his successors however since he died relatively young (by our standards).

One neat trick the Arabs came up with was to pay Byzantine military groups that'd not been paid for decades. For the most part the early Moslems from Mecca and Medina really didn't know very much about the outside world ~ it was all new to them, and that's probably why they so quickly figured out that all they had to do was pay soldiers to do their bidding.

Crenson has another article here:

Actress Brooke Shields has a pretty impressive pedigree — hanging from her family tree are Catherine de Medici and Lucrezia Borgia, Charlemagne and El Cid, William the Conquerer and King Harold, vanquished by William at the Battle of Hastings.

Shields also descends from five popes, a whole mess of early New England settlers, and the royal houses of virtually every European country. She counts renaissance pundit Niccolo Machiavelli and conquistador Hernando Cortes as ancestors.

...

The longer ago somebody lived, the more descendants a person is likely to have today. Humphrys estimates that Muhammad, the founder of Islam, appears on the family tree of every person in the Western world.

There's some doubt about whether the genealogy is accurate in the case of Muhammad's descendants, but it's an interesting speculation.
